Reyes Syndrome in Children

Reyes syndrome, the causes are not fully understood
but it may be triggered in children who are given 'Aspirin' to bring down their fever, while suffering a viral illness.
The UK Gov had already banned the giving of Aspirin products to any child under 12 years old, has now hardened that advice to include all children of 16 years and under.
*I cannot find the latest UK Gov warning, but "Reyes Syndrome" will find similar on the Web.*

  • Join a Discussion on Science in the News By LAWRENCE K. ALTMAN M.D. n 1951, pediatricians in Sydney, Australia, were puzzled by the death of a 10-month-old boy. The child had been screaming and vomiting for 30 hours, and doctors believed that he had a systemic infection or meningitis. But it was neither. Peering into a standard microscope at tissues from the boy's autopsy, Dr. Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye found no evidence of infection. Instead, he noticed distinct liver and brain damage of a type that he had never seen. Over the next 11 years at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Dr. Reye identified 20 more cases of what his colleagues nicknamed Reye's syndrome. The doctors suspected the damage had resulted from a toxin they could not identify. In 1963, Dr. Reye (pronounced like rye) described the cases in The Lancet. Although the report came from the same hospital where in 1942 Dr. Norman Gregg first recognized the damage that rubella virus infection in a pregnant woman could have on her fetus, Reye's syndrome drew little attention. Still, these reports started a chain of events that led to one of the century's major public health triumphs, while leaving the man the syndrome was named for nearly obscure.

    Reye's Syndrome
by Leigh Ann Reynolds, M.S.S.W., M.P.A. What is Reye's syndrome? Reye's (pronounced "rye") syndrome is a disease which is believed to be caused by the ingestion of medicines (such as aspirin) that contain salicylate (pronounced "sa(LISS(a(late") that affects all organs of the body, but affects the liver and brain most lethally. It occurs when abnormal accumulations of fat develop in the liver and other organs of the body, along with a severe increase of pressure in the brain. It affects mostly children and teenagers and appears soon after flu-like infection or chicken pox. Reye's syndrome occurs most frequently during the months of January, February and March when influenza is most common, although cases have been reported throughout the year. Reports of the syndrome appeared as early as 1929, but it wasn't until 1963 that the symptoms were first recognized as a distinct disease by R. Douglas Reye, M.D., an Australian pathologist. Dr. Reye suspected that a drug or poison (later identified as aspirin) triggered the disease's development, but there was no proof of such a substance in the homes of the children who acquired the illness, nor did autopsies reveal the presence of any such substance ingested by the child. Can taking aspirin cause Reye's syndrome?

    After Reye's Syndrome
The National Reye's Syndrome Foundation offers the following information to parents of children who have experienced Reye's Syndrome. It is furnished to provide assistance in understanding the potential needs of the RS survivor and the family and, in addition, to provide guidance in securing any necessary services.
It is possible for the RS survivor to recover completely with no after-effects or observable changes. There may, however, be recovery with brain damage and disability ranging from very slight motor or learning disabilities to profound brain injury.
    What are the Potential Problems
of the Reye's Syndrome Survivor? Reye's Syndrome can result in brain damage and disability in some survivors. The number of cases of RS which fall into this category is unrecorded. If damage occurs, it can range from slight to profound, depending on the individual case. Likewise, the rehabilitative requirements will range from minimal remediation to institutional care. Since there is such a wide range of possibilities, and since these possibilities are to a certain extent unpredictable, parents need to become aware of the potential problems and the appropriate services which may be required. Early evaluation following physiological recovery should be pursued for the purpose of identifying problems and beginning any appropriate educational remediation and/or therapy.

Children's Pain Today's Date Reye's syndrome Reye’s syndrome (RS) is a very rare disease that affects approximately 1 person per million. It is named after the US doctor who first diagnosed it in 1963. It is mostly children that are affected, although adults can also suffer. It is thought, although it has still not been absolutely proven, that aspirin may increase the risk of contracting RS. What is RS? RS is not contagious. It occurs during the recovery period following a viral infection. Symptoms are persistent vomiting, loss of consciousness, convulsions, delirium and personality changes. If not treated in time, it can go on to harm the liver and brain. Brain damage may occur due to an increase in pressure within the brain and the liver can become grossly enlarged. However, RS is so rare and is usually diagnosed in time to prevent severe damage to the body. What causes RS?
