Reyes Syndrome Alaska reported its first case of Reyes Syndrome occurring in a young boy. Reyes Syndrome is an extremely serious illness characterized by encephalopathy, metabolic abnormalities and fatty infiltration of the liver. This syndrome usually is preceded by a non-specific viral illness. Mortality is 50% and the cause of the syndrome is unknown. Generally this disease strikes young children. Fortunately, the child survived. In this particular case, Adenovirus, Type 14, was isolated from the cerebral spinal fluid. (Reported by Dion Roberts, M.D.) Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a Coxsackie Virus, usually Type A-l6. The disease is usually characterized by vesicular stomatitis with oral lesions occurring on the buccal surface of the cheeks and gums. Papulovesicular lesions also occur on the hands, feet and legs and may persist for 7 to 10 days. Hence the name hand, foot and mouth disease. Herpangina, also caused by a Coxsackie Virus (usually Type 3) differs from hand, foot and mouth disease in that vesicular lesions are generally confined to the soft palate and anterior pharynx. Treatment is symptomatic for both of the above diseases.

STATE HEALTH DIRECTOR WARNS THAT ASPIRIN CONTAINS INGREDIENTS THAT ARE DANGEROUS TO CHILDREN AND TEENAGERS
Parents and caregivers should use medicines that contain acetaminophen to
treat flu or cold symptoms or chickenpox in children and teenagers because aspirin contains ingredients that have been linked to a rare disease. Salicylates, the main ingredients found in aspirin, have been associated with the development of a rare condition known as Reye's syndrome, a disease that can lead to coma, brain damage and even death in children and teenagers suffering from the flu, flu-like illnesses or chickenpox. If children and teenagers have flu symptoms, it is very important for parents and caregivers to remember not to give them aspirin as a remedy. In general, children and teenagers should not be given aspirin or aspirin-containing products unless prescribed by their physician. Medicines that contain acetaminophen, such as Tylenol®, Datril®, Liquiprim® and Tempra®, should be used to treat symptoms of flu and colds, such as fever, headache, muscle aches, coughing and sore throat, in children and teenagers.

For Immediate Release STATE HEALTH DIRECTOR ISSUES REYE'S SYNDROME REMINDER Berkeley, California (Monday, December 11, 2000) – The City of Berkeley Health Officer would like to advise the Berkeley Community of the following information. SACRAMENTO - With the anticipated arrival of influenza season this month, State Health Director Diana Bontá, R.N., Dr.P.H., today reminded parents and physicians that children and teenagers should not be given aspirin while they are suffering from flu or flu-like illnesses or from chickenpox.
"When used to treat viral infections such as the flu or chickenpox, salicylates - the main ingredients found in aspirin - have been associated with the development of a rare condition known as Reye's syndrome," Bonta' explained. "This is a severe disease that can lead to coma, brain damage and death."

27. CarefulParents.com - Aspirin Should Not Be Given To Children
The probability of contracting reyes syndrome is small, but there is no need to take the risk To avoid reyes syndrome, Never give aspirin to a child.
http://www.carefulparents.com/aspirin.htm
Aspirin should not be given to children
Just about every household contains aspirin, and it was not too many years ago that children took orange-flavored "baby aspirin" all the time. Today, children under age 17 are never given aspirin because of the concern about Reyes Syndrome , a potentially deadly disease affecting the brain and the liver. According to this article
One study found that 90 percent of patients with Reye's syndrome had taken aspirin before or during a viral illness. People, especially children, with viral illnesses are encouraged not to use aspirin or any medications containing aspirin since it could trigger Reye's syndrome.
The probability of contracting Reyes syndrome is small, but there is no need to take the risk when other pain relievers are available. The other concern with aspirin is that a child will get into a bottle of aspirin and swallow a dozen tablets. According to this article
A potentially toxic dose is seen above 150 mg/kg to 300 mg/kg (mg of aspirin/kg body weight).
For a 22 pound child, this translates into just 5 to 10 regular-strenth tablets, or 3 to 5 extra-stength tablets. If the tablets are brightly colored and gel-coated, it is not hard to imagine a young child swallowing that many.

... Which Flu Season Was the Most Severe?
    Who Should Get Flu Shots?
Anyone who wants to minimize his or her chances of getting the flu may want to get an influenza shot. If in doubt, a physician should be consulted. Parents are urged to get babies and young children, 6 months to two years of age, vaccinated because influenza sends this group to the hospital as often as it does the elderly. Caregivers to babies younger than 6 months are also urged to get a flu shot. (Babies younger then 6 months shouldn't get the flu shot). Parents need to be aware that young children require two doses, a month apart. To be sure their kids get both shots in time, parents shouldn't delay that visit to the pediatrician. Most physicians agree that people in the high-risk groups should get flu shots annually because flu-shot protection does not carry over from year to year. Those in the high-risk groups are the people most in danger of developing flu complications, such as pneumonia, which can be fatal.
