  • Overview . Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common condition afflicting between 5% and 15% of the population. It is characterized by dysesthesias and restlessness of the legs and may be associated with other medical conditions. RLS is treatable, although therapy must be individually tailored.
  • Signs and Symptoms
  • Unpleasant limb sensations . Sensations are described as crawling, creeping, aching, jittery, or fidgety in nature. Legs are much more commonly effected than the arms (hence the name). Sensations are precipitated by rest Compelling motor restlessness . Movement of the limb may briefly relieve the sensation. Worse at night . Sometimes occurs in the evening or while riding in a car. Periodic limb movements of sleep . Patients with RLS often have semirhythmic flexion/extension movements of the foot, which occur every 20 to 40 seconds during non-REM sleep.

    Restless Legs Syndrome Overview
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a disorder of the part of the nervous system that affects movements of the legs. Because it usually interferes with sleep, it also is considered a sleep disorder.
    • People with RLS have strange sensations in their legs (and sometimes arms) and an irresistible urge to move their legs to relieve the sensations.
The sensations are difficult to describe: they are not painful, but an uncomfortable, "itchy," "pins and needles," or "creepy crawly" feeling deep in the legs.
The sensations are usually worse at rest, especially when lying in bed.
The sensations lead to walking discomfort, sleep deprivation, and stress.
RLS affects about 8-10% of the US population. Men and women are affected equally. It may begin at any age, even in infants and young children. Most people who are affected severely are middle-aged or older.
The severity of RLS symptoms ranges from mild to intolerable. Symptoms get gradually worse over time in about two thirds of people with the condition and may be severe enough to be disabling. The symptoms are generally worse in the evening and night and less severe in the morning. While the symptoms are usually quite mild in young adults, by age 50 the symptoms cause severe nightly sleep disruption that leads to decreased alertness in the daytime.

Genetic contributions to restless legs syndrome have been consistently supported by population, family and twin studies. To identify genetic risk factors, the current study used information from French Canadian families, where, according to the researchers, prevalence of restless legs syndrome is higher than in other populations. Alex Desautels, Ph.D., of the University of Montreal, and colleagues examined the DNA of 19 multigenerational French Canadian families with four to nine individuals who were affected (or possibly affected) by restless legs syndrome. The researchers used statistical analysis of the genetic information to determine whether restless legs syndrome in each family was linked with markers on the same location on chromosome 12q that had previously been associated with restless legs syndrome.

    Definition
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is characterized by unpleasant sensations in the limbs, usually the legs, that occur at rest or before sleep and are relieved by activity such as walking. These sensations are felt deep within the legs and are described as creeping, crawling, aching, or fidgety. Description
Restless legs syndrome, also known as Ekbom syndrome, Wittmaack-Ekbom syndrome, anxietas tibiarum , or anxietas tibialis , affects up to 10-15% of the population. Some studies show that RLS is more common among elderly people. Almost half of patients over age 60 who complain of insomnia are diagnosed with RLS. In some cases, the patient has another medical condition with which RLS is associated. In idiopathic RLS, no cause can be found. In familial cases, RLS may be inherited from a close relative, most likely a parent.
Most people experience mild symptoms. They may lie down to rest at the end of the day and, just before sleep, will experience discomfort in their legs that prompts them to stand up, massage the leg, or walk briefly. Eighty-five percent of RLS patients either have difficulty falling asleep or wake several times during the night, and almost half experience daytime fatigue or sleepiness. It is common for the symptoms to be intermittent. They may disappear for several months and then return for no apparent reason. Two-thirds of patients report that their symptoms become worse with time. Some older patients claim to have had symptoms since they were in their early 20s, but were not diagnosed until their 50s. Suspected under-diagnosis of RLS may be attributed to the difficulty experienced by patients in describing their symptoms.

What it is and why it happens
If you've started feeling an uncontrollable urge to move around in bed to relieve crawling, tingling, or burning sensations deep inside your legs, you most likely have restless legs syndrome (RLS). Some researchers estimate that up to 20 percent of pregnant women develop this problem during the last few months of pregnancy, though others believe it's much less common than that. You'll usually notice symptoms when you're at rest, especially right before you fall asleep or when sitting still for long periods, such as at the movies or during long car rides. Most of the time, you'll feel it in your legs, but some women experience it in their arms as well. Moving your limbs brings immediate relief, but unfortunately, it's only temporary. As soon as you sit or lie down, the sensations return. Your restless legs may even be waking you up once you're asleep. If symptoms are disrupting your sleep night after night, you may end up seriously fatigued. The good news is that if your RLS started during your pregnancy, it's likely to disappear altogether within two to four weeks after you give birth.

    Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
What is restless legs syndrome (RLS)?
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a cause of insomnia (trouble sleeping) for many people. RLS sufferers experience aching, twitching, tingling, burning, or prickling sensations in the lower leg muscles when they lie in bed or sometimes when they are sitting down. The discomfort is relieved only by getting up and standing or walking.
    How does it occur?
The exact cause of RLS is not known. It tends to run in families. It is more common after middle age and occurs more frequently in women than in men. Many people with RLS can recall "growing pains" in their legs during childhood. It may be that a nerve malfunction is involved. RLS has also been linked with alcohol dependence, smoking, too much caffeine (usually from drinking coffee), rheumatoid arthritis, anemia, and diabetes. Use of some medicines may make symptoms worse.

    Restless Legs Syndrome
    Ekbom's syndrome
Restless legs syndrome causes uncomfortable feelings in your legs. As a result you have an urge to move your legs which gives temporary relief. Symptoms come on when resting and are worse at the end of the day. No treatment may be needed if symptoms are mild. Medication can ease symptoms if the condition is distressing.
What is restless legs syndrome and what are the symptoms? Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is sometimes called Ekbom's syndrome after the doctor who first described it in 1945. It is a condition where you have an urge to move the legs. This is usually caused by an uncomfortable or unpleasant feeling in the legs. Many people with RLS find it difficult to describe the feeling - it may be like a 'crawling' sensation, or like an electric feeling, or 'like toothache' or 'like water running down your leg' or just uncomfortable or painful. The unpleasant feeling and urge to move occurs every 10-60 seconds and so you become quite restless. The symptoms:
    • develop when you are resting - particularly when you are sitting down or lying in bed. They tend to be worse if you are in a confined space such as in a cinema seat.
