Restless leg syndrome

Originally defined by a Swedish neurologist in the 1940s, restless leg syndrome is now thought to affect up to 15% of the population, particularly older people. Four basic elements must be present to make the diagnosis:
  • A desire to move the limbs, often associated with paresthesia or dysaesthesia Symptoms exacerbated by rest and relieved by activity Motor restlessness Nocturnal worsening of the symptoms

  • What helps? L-dopa and benzodiazepines have been tried, but there are now three high-quality randomised studies of pergolide (a dopamine receptor agonist) which show it to be highly effective. Details of the studies are shown in the Table. All of the studies were well-designed and highly detailed in the outcomes they examined, and all of them allowed a period of dose-escalation with both pergolide and comparator with drug formulations of identical appearance.

Audio Scripts Books estless leg syndrome is something that troubles a lot of people, and Yael and Don discuss it in this Moment of Science. Y: You look like you haven't sleep a wink, Don. D: I haven't. I sympathize with my wife, I really do, but those crazy legs of hers are driving me crazy. Y: Does she kick you in her sleep? D: Sometimes, but that's not the half of it. She's got this thing called Restless Leg Syndrome, and it makes her legs sort of itch, and the only thing that relieves the itch is to move them. If that weren't bad enough, the itching gets worse at night, so she can't stop moving her legs aroundall night long! Someone needs to figure out what has gone haywire in her brain so we can both sleep again! Y: You'll be glad to know that recent research has found that there seem to be no pathological changes in the brains of people with Restless Leg Syndrome. That is, there is no loss or damage of brain cells, as is the case in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. D: That's good, but what causes it then?

    Restless leg syndrome
Definition: Restless leg syndrome is a sleep disorder characterized by leg discomfort during sleep, which is only relieved by frequent movements of the legs.
    Alternative Names: Nocturnal myoclonus; RLS
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Restless leg syndrome (RLS) occurs most often in middle-aged and older adults. It is worsened by stress. The cause is not known. The disorder consists of sensations in the lower legs that make the person uncomfortable unless the legs are moved. The sensations usually occur shortly after going to bed but may also occur during the daytime. The abnormal sensations occasionally occur in the upper leg, the feet or the arms in addition to the lower leg. In some cases, no other medical or neurological condition is identified. However, restless leg syndrome may occur in patients with peripheral neuropathy or other neurological disorders.
There is an irresistible urge to walk or move the legs to relieve the discomfort, resulting in periodic episodes of leg movements during early sleep stages. The symptoms may last for 1 hour or longer.

It is not related to other emotional or psychiatric disorders. The experience of RLS usually involves "creepy" sensations that occur in the legs or arms when sitting still and especially at bedtime. It is very different from the feelings associated with a limb "falling asleep" when the blood supply is lessened. The pain and unpleasant feelings are usually in the calf muscles and can often be temporarily lessened by stretching and moving the legs. What occurs during RLS? The sensations associated with RLS occur primarily when the person is awake and can affect the ability to fall asleep at night. The constant need to move around or stretch the legs can prevent the person from falling asleep. The lack of sleep associated with RLS is a common problem. Restless Legs Syndrome can also affect one's ability to carry out daily activities (such as participating in business meetings). It may interfere with the ability to travel long distances and have other detrimental effects on a person's life.

Does anyone have any information to share regarding restless legs syndrome? Interested in causes and remedies, including info. on Calm's forte night time remedy or other medications. Thanks from A Very Unrested kicker. An unrested kicker I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia early this year. One of the associated symptoms was restless leg syndrome. I have to say that Calmsforte has done the trick 99% of the time for me. I'm 38 weeks pregnant at this point and wouldn't be able to sleep much without it. Someone recommended Boiron's Quietude, but it did nothing for me. Homeopathic remedies work differently for everyone, so I hope the Calmsforte works for you. Before Calmsforte, I had to get out of bed, do a series of squats, calf raises and one-leg dips on the stairs, and then a series of stretches before I could go back to bed...and then there was no guarantee that my legs wouldn't start up again. I do remember my doctor (UCSF) saying that there was some prescription medication I could take, but I didn't want to go that route since I was pregnant. Good luck! Jill I have had Restless Leg Syndrome for years and finally have a combo of things I use when it is really bothering me.
