Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
What is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?
RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the lower airways) and pneumonia in babies. It is an illness that often occurs in yearly outbreaks in communities and in newborn intensive care units (NICUs). In the United States, RSV is more common in winter and spring months.
What causes respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?
RSV is spread from respiratory secretions through close contact with infected persons or contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Infection can occur when infectious material contacts mucous membranes of the eyes, mouth, or nose, and possibly through the inhalation of droplets generated by a sneeze or cough. The incubation period (time from exposure to symptoms) is about four days.

What is respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)?
The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) causes an illness that usually resembles a moderate to severe cold and is very contagious. RSV most often resolves on its own and does not cause major health concerns. This infection can become a problem when it is severe or leads to complications. Babies (especially those born prematurely), people with immune system problems, people with heart or lung problems, and older adults have an increased risk of developing complications from RSV infection. Outbreaks of RSV infection generally occur at regular and predictable times each year, although they vary in severity. The number of infections usually peaks in the late fall, winter, and early spring in the United States and Europe. In tropical climates, epidemics occur during the rainy season.

RSV infection usually resolves on its own and does not cause major health concerns, but it can become a problem when it is severe or leads to pneumonia, bronchiolitis, or other complications. Babies (especially those born prematurely or with heart or lung problems), people with immune system problems, and adults age 65 and older have an increased risk of developing complications from RSV infection. Although reinfection with RSV is common throughout life, the first infection usually causes the most severe symptoms. Almost all children become infected with RSV by the age of 2 years.

Respiratory syncytial virus vaccine: Is it coming?
V Sales, EEL Wang Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is recognized as an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. Vaccine development has been challenging in young infants and has required the advent of molecular technologies to optimize the safety profile, while maintaining immunogenicity of live-attenuated vaccines. Protein-based vaccines have been evaluated in clinical trials and are promising candidates for RSV-primed populations or for maternal vaccination to provide early life protection. This review provides a summary of the need for an RSV vaccine, as well as the challenges and progress in the vaccine’s development. Respiratory syncytial virus immune globulin intravenous (Respigam or RSV-IGIV) was licensed in Canada in 1997, while palivizumab (Synagis), a newer product that has not yet been licensed by the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada, is available in Canada through a special program from Abbott Laboratories, Montreal, Quebec. Guidelines for the use of RSV-IGIV were published by the Infectious Diseases and Immunization Committee of the Canadian Paediatric Society (1). This statement summarizes the information available about palivizumab, compares it with RSV-IGIV and provides updated recommendations for the use of these products in Canada.

Diagnosis
Respiratory Syncytial Virus What is the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)? The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a virus that causes mild respiratory infections such as colds and coughs in adults but in young children can produce severe pulmonary diseases including bronchiolitis and pneumonia RSV is an RNA virus. It is unstable in the environment and survives only a few hours on environmental surfaces. The virus is readily inactivated with soap and water and disinfectants.   When does RSV infection occur and who gets it? Infection with RSV is seasonal. In temperate climates, RSV infections usually occur during the late fall, winter, or early spring months. There are annual community outbreaks of RSV infection that often last 4 to 6 months. More than half of all infants are exposed to RSV by their first birthday. Many have few or no symptoms. However, some infants with RSV become very ill. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and

The most severe cases of RSV are in babies under 6 months old because their lungs aren't fully developed yet and the damage from these infections can linger. Premature babies, twins and other multiples, and babies born with respiratory problems or congenital heart disease are at particularly high risk for contracting a serious infection. Research suggests that babies infected with RSV are more likely to develop
