Western medical etiological factors Chinese medical etiological factors The causes of muscle and sinew pain have been well described in many Chinese medical texts, as early as the "The Treatise on Bi" in the Nei Jing Su Wen. In Huang-fu Mi's Systematic Classic of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, there are several chapters devoted specifically to these types of problems. (2) In more modern books such as Bi Syndromes by Vangermeersch and Sun, theories about muscle/sinew pain have been synthesized into a format that is quite accessible for Western students and practitioners.

Biopsychosocial rehabilitation for upper limb repetitive strain injuries in working age adults (Cochrane Review)
Karjalainen K, Malmivaara A, van Tulder M, Roine R, Jauhiainen M, Hurri H, Koes B ABSTRACT What's new in this issue Search abstracts Browse alphabetical list of titles Browse by Review Group A substantive amendment to this systematic review was last made on 26 May 2000. Cochrane reviews are regularly checked and updated if necessary. Background: Upper limb repetitive strain injury is a common problem in western countries, causing human suffering and huge economical losses. Patients with prolonged pain associated with repetitive tasks in the work place can face both psychological and physical difficulties. Different treatment programmes, physical, psychological, behavioural , social and occupational treatments have been developed and used to help these patients. Objectives: The objective of this systematic review is to determine the effectiveness of biopsychosocial rehabilitation for upper limb repetitive strain injuries among working age adults. Search strategy: The reviewed studies for this structured Cochrane review were identified from electronic bibliographic databases, the Science Citation Index, reference checking and consulting experts in the rehabilitation field. The original search was planned and performed for a more broad area of musculoskeletal disorders. Trials on repetitive strain injuries were separated afterwards.

The aim of these notes is not to enable you to self-diagnose, but to make you aware of the various problems so you can recognise the symptoms and take preventative action. Some very important points to note You should use this understanding to help avoid problems and catch possible problems at an early, sub-clinical stage. Prevention is very much better than cure. Self-diagnosis is often very difficult, as problems in the neck can cause pain in the elbow and a back problem regularly manifests itself as pain in the legs. Terminology Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is an umbrella term, a shorthand to refer to various musculo-skeletal injuries which are normally related to some activity. Acronyms If you are into acronyms you can choose from Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTD) Work-related Upper Limb Disorders (WRULD) Occupational Overuse Injuries. (OOI) The medical terms include: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common medical diagnosis for those suffering from RSI.

Repetitive Strain Injury Stop Overuse Abuse If you do something over and over again, you'll get better at it, right? Maybe, maybe not. Women who experience repetitive strain injury know too well that years of performing a task over and over, whether it be keying data into a computer all day, ringing up cash-register sales day after day, or knitting for hours in the evenings, can cause long-term pain. Worse, this kind of injury can interfere with on-the-job performance or continued employment. Repetitive strain injuries now account for more than 50 percent of all occupational illnesses reported in the United States. The most common of these injuries is carpal tunnel syndrome, in which wrist, arm, elbow and hand muscles hurt from overuse.
