Parents Infections
Although rabies infections in people are rare, they can cause serious health problems. So it's a good idea to know how to recognize the signs that your child has been bitten by a rabid animal and what to do about it.
Rabies is a virus that is usually transmitted by a bite from a wild infected animal, such as a bat, raccoon, skunk, or fox. If a rabid animal bite goes untreated, an infection can develop and lead to brain damage or even death. But if you recognize the warning signs of a rabies infection early, and get medical help, your child can make a full recovery. After a bite by a rabid animal, a child may develop a fever, headache, and general malaise. A twitching around the animal bite, a trademark symptom of rabies, may appear, in addition to a fever above 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.5 degrees Celsius), agitation, and hallucinations. If you suspect that your child has been bitten by a rabid animal, even if there are no rabies symptoms, it is important to take your child to the emergency department immediately.
Any animal bites - even those that don't involve rabies - can lead to infections and other medical problems. As a precaution, you may want to call your child's doctor any time your child has been bitten.

Rabies
Rabies Overview
Rabies is a disease humans may get from being bitten by an animal infected with the rabies virus. Rabies has been recognized for over 4,000 years. Yet, despite great advances in diagnosing and preventing it, today rabies is almost always deadly in humans who contract it and do not receive treatment. Rabies can be totally prevented. You must recognize the exposure and promptly get appropriate medical care before you develop the symptoms of rabies.
  • Where rabies is found: Human rabies is quite rare in the United States. Only 27 cases have been reported in people in the United States since 1990. Yet in some areas of the world (for example, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America), human rabies is much more common. The incidence of rabies in people parallels the incidence in the animal kingdom. The great strides that have been made in controlling the disease in animals in the United States and in other developed countries is directly responsible for this decline in human rabies.
    • Although rabies in humans is very rare in the United States, between 16,000 and 39,000 people receive preventive medical treatment each year after being exposed to a potentially rabid animal.

Bat FAQ
Why would I want to attract bats? Bats are important indicators of a healthy environment. Because they are sensitive to high pollution and pesticide levels, they are useful as a warning sign to potential environmental problems. Also, bats can be important weapons in combating insects that are actually dangerous to humans. A small bat can capture more than 1,200 mosquitoes in a single hour! Also, bats cannot contract the West Nile Virus by eating infected mosquitoes. Besides mosquitoes, bats can help control the populations of beetles, moths, and leafhoppers. Many insects can hear bats up to 100 feet away and will avoid those areas occupied by bats. The effectiveness of bats in some areas diminishes the need for pesticides that can harm both the pests and their natural predators.

rabies
rabies
Rabies (from a Latin word meaning rage), is a viral disease that causes acute encephalitis in animals and people. It can affect most species of warm-blooded animal, but is rare among non-carnivores. In unvaccinated humans, untreated rabies is almost invariably fatal. The stereotypical image of an infected ("rabid") animal is a "mad dog" foaming at the mouth, but cats, ferrets, raccoons, chipmunks, skunks, foxes and bats also become rabid. Squirrels, other rodents and rabbits are very seldom infected, perhaps because they would not usually survive an attack by a rabid animal. Rabies may also present in a so-called 'paralytic' form, rendering the infected animal unnaturally quiet and withdrawn. The virus is usually present in the saliva of a symptomatic rabid animal; the route of infection is nearly always by a bite. By causing the infected animal to be exceptionally aggressive, the virus ensures its transmission to the next host. Transmission has occurred via an aerosol through mucous membranes; transmission in this form may have happened in people exploring caves populated by rabid bats. Transmission from person to person is extremely rare, and can happen through transplant surgery, or (even more rarely) bites or kisses. A case of transmission via organ transplants happened in June 2004, in Texas (US), when organs from a man infected with rabies caused the death of three recipients. Rabies tests are not conducted on organs destined for transplantation.

Rabies victim dies in UK
LONDON, England A man who contracted rabies after being bitten by a dog in the Philippines has died in a London hospital. Hilario Laya, who was born in the Philippines but had lived in Britain for several years, became ill after a trip to visit his family. A spokeswoman for University College Hospital, London, said Laya died on Monday night. The last indigenous case of rabies infection in the UK occurred in 1902. Laya was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London on April 30 and was moved into isolation. He was given the rabies vaccine to boost his immune response to the virus within an hour of being admitted and was then sedated. Relatives and members of hospital staff treating the patient were immunised, although the risk of transmission to humans is tiny. Other than the vaccine, there is no other treatment for the disease which is often fatal.

Study says rabies shots often overused

Rabies Vaccination
High Risk Countries and Pre-Travel Vaccination
Rabies remains a major public health problem in Asia, Africa, Central and South America. The highest risk countries for travelers include Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam. In Thailand, between 200-300 human rabies deaths are reported annually with 95% due to dog bites. A survey of 1,882 foreign travelers in Thailand determined that 1.2% had a history of dog bite and 8.7% experienced a dog lick during their stay. Other animals that can spread rabies include bats, cats, skunks, racoons, foxes, jackals, mongooses, and wolves. It is recommended that all unvaccinated individuals with animal bites receive immediate treatment with human rabies immune globulin (HRIG) injected into and around the wound followed by rabies vaccination. Two types of rabies vaccine are now available. The original human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) and a new purified chick embryo culture vaccine (PCEC). After exposure, five doses of either rabies vaccine must be given into a muscle (intramuscularly) over a one month period. While this treatment should be adequate to prevent the development of rabies, treatment can be simplified if rabies vaccine is given prior to exposure. Prior vaccination may also offer some degree of protection in cases when treatment after an animal bite may be unavoidably delayed.

Rabies
Rabies is an acute viral infection that is nearly always fatal. Transmission is usually through saliva via the bite of an infected animal, with dogs being the main transmitter of rabies to humans. The World Health Organization has estimated the annual number of human rabies deaths to be between 40,000 and as high as 70,000. Most of these deaths take place in developing countries, particularly in South and South East Asia. In the UK the last human death from indigenous classical rabies occurred in 1902, and the last case of indigenous terrestrial animal rabies was in 1922. Most cases of rabies in the UK now occur in quarantined animals, or in people infected abroad. Since 1946 there have been 22 deaths in people infected with rabies abroad.

U.S. rabies toll surges to five in 'ordinary year'
ATLANTA, Georgia (Reuters) Five people have died during the past three months from rabies, which normally causes only one or two human deaths a year, federal health experts said Thursday. The five deaths, which occurred in California, Georgia, Minnesota, New York state and Wisconsin, were the first human rabies cases to be diagnosed in the United States since December 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.
