Discoveries about the role of the immune system in psoriasis. Transcript:
Psoriasis is a skin condition we don't often cover on The Health Report, despite lots of requests to do so. The reason for the requests is that people who have psoriasis are often really troubled by the disease and desperate for news of any advances. But advances come slowly - partly because dermatology is not a well-funded area of research. A few days ago though, a researcher who's made discoveries about the role of the immune system in psoriasis was in Australia for an international dermatology conference. He's Dr Kevin Cooper, of Case Western Reserve University in the United States. Kevin Cooper: Psoriasis is quite common: in the US, 6-million individuals; it travels in families, and many people have the susceptibility for it, but haven't been challenged by the environment appropriately yet to have their psoriasis. Norman Swan: Now for somebody who might not know anybody with it, what does it look like, what sort of bother does somebody get into with psoriasis?

Unpredictable and irritating, psoriasis is one of the most baffling and persistent of skin disorders. It is characterized by skin cells that multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. As underlying cells reach the skin's surface and die, their sheer volume causes raised, red patches covered with white scale. Psoriasis typically occurs on the knees, elbows, and scalp but can affect the torso, palms, and soles of the feet. There are many forms of psoriasis each differing in location, severity, and duration. One type, called plaque psoriasis, is the most common. About 10%-15% of people with psoriasis have associated joint inflammation that produces symptoms of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis . People who suffer from psoriasis know that this uncomfortable and at times disfiguring skin disease can be difficult and frustrating to treat. The condition comes and goes in cycles of remissions and flare-ups over a lifetime. While there are medications and other therapies that can help to clear up the patches of red, scaly, thickened skin that are the hallmark of psoriasis, there is no cure.

The Facts about Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease of scaling and inflammation that affects up to 7.5 million people in the US. Although the disease occurs in all age groups, it primarily affects adults, and appears about equally in males and females. Psoriasis occurs when skin cells quickly rise from below the surface of the skin and pile up on the surface before they have a chance to mature. Usually this turnover takes about a month, but in psoriasis it may occur in only a few days. In its typical form, psoriasis results in patches of thick, red skin covered with silvery scales. These patches, which are sometimes referred to as plaques, usually itch or feel sore. They most often occur on the elbows, knees, other parts of the legs, scalp, lower back, face, palms, and soles of the feet, but they can occur on skin anywhere on the body. The disease may also affect the fingernails, the toenails, and the soft tissues of the genitals and inside the mouth. While it is not unusual for the skin around affected joints to crack, approximately 1 million people with psoriasis experience joint inflammation that produces symptoms of arthritis. This condition is called psoriatic arthritis.

The hidden delight of psoriasis
Introduction
In John Updike's novel The Centaur young Peter Caldwell has psoriasis. He is not sure whether to tell his girlfriend, but he is also aware of the power that the disease can involve, when he wonders: "Should he tell her? Would it, by making her share the shame, wed them inextricably; make her, by bondage of pity, his slave? Can he, so young, afford a slave?" And he does not conceal the fact that the disease also gives him pleasure. "The delight of feeling a large flake yield and part from the body under the insistence of a fingernail must be experienced to be forgiven."

113. Dermatitis, Eczema, Psoriasis. Understanding The Causes From Natraderm.
A range of products used to cool and moisturize the skin of people of suffering from dermatological complaints such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.
http://www.natraderm.com/
Eczema, Dermatitis, Psoriasis, and Pruritus can be treated by understanding the causes.
Dermatitis and eczema are often considered synonymous and psoriasis is often treated in the same way. They are not infectious. However, such problems may also have internal causes; there may be a family history of hay fever, asthma, or atopic eczema. Predisposing causes are nervous strain and allergic tendencies. Dermatitis (or eczema) is an inflammation of the skin where swelling, redness, itching or a burning sensation is present. Sometimes the first inflammation is felt, rather than seen, as it is immediately beneath the skin's surface . Reddened spots, scales, crusts or blisters may be present, either alone or in combination. It may take a mild form, or be more severe. In the treatment of these skin problems and even conditions such as infant eczema it is advantageous to watch for and eliminate any obvious cause; sensitivity to external irritants (e.g. Ivy, Rhus Trees, Grevileas, household detergents, some cosmetics, lanolin, nickel in jewellery and fasteners, chemicals in rubber, leather and cement), certain foods (e.g. spices, alcohol, eggs, oranges, cow's milk), articles of clothing (such as wool or synthetic materials), cold or wind, sudden changes in temperature, nervous and emotional upsets, fatigue, and even certain drugs.

Zanolli, MD, and William L. Dobes, MD I. Introduction Definition Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease that is classically characterized by thickened, red areas of skin covered with silvery scales. The extent of skin involvement can range from discrete, localized areas to generalized body involvement. The joints, nails, and mucous membranes may also be affected with the disease. Rationale Scope Psoriasis affects 1% to 2% of the general population. It has no known cure and can affect all age groups. It may be symptomatic throughout life and may be progressive with age or wax and wan in its severity. Physical and psychological disability produced by the disease may range from minor to total. In addition to classical plaque psoriasis, a severe inflammatory form of the disease, erythrodermic psoriasis, or generalized pustular psoriasis may produce involvement of the total body surface and may have associated systemic or constitutional manifestations.
