Psoriasis Overview
Psoriasis is a common and chronic skin disorder. Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis and is characterized by red skin covered with silvery scales and inflammation. Patches of circular to oval shaped red plaques that itch or burn are typical of plaque psoriasis. The patches are usually found on the arms, legs, trunk, or scalp but may be found on any part of the skin. The most typical areas are the knees and elbows.

Psoriasis is not contagious but can be inherited. Research indicates that the disease may result from a disorder in the immune system (See Causes Factors such as smoking, sun exposure, alcoholism, and HIV infection may affect how often the psoriasis occurs and how long the flares up last. Approximately 1-2% of people in the United States, or about 5.5 million, have plaque psoriasis. Up to 30% of people with plaque psoriasis also have psoriatic arthritis . Individuals with psoriatic arthritis have inflammation in their joints and may have other arthritis symptoms. Sometimes plaque psoriasis can evolve into more severe disease, such as

Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common condition affecting the skin. It causes red, scaly patches. In addition it can affect the joints, nails and eyes.
Symptoms
Psoriasis can cause as little as a single dimple on one of your finger or toe nails, or affect as much as the majority of your skin surface, your joints, and your eyes. 2% of people (1 in 50) have psoriasis to some degree. The most commonly affected areas are the back of the elbows and the front of the knees. It often affects the scalp, too, and can, indeed, affect any part of the body. The standard appearance is of red areas where the skin is thickened and crusty, often with silvery flakes, which come off easily. This appears as patches, which are known as plaques.
Types of psoriasis
  • Plaque psoriasis .The patches most commonly seen are called plaques. They especially affect the back of the elbows and the front of the knees and the back.
  • Guttate psoriasis is many small patches of psoriasis, all over the body, and often happens after a throat infection.
  • Flexural psoriasis causes red, shiny areas in skin folds eg under breasts, between buttocks etc.

Psoriasis Hall of PShame
This is a critical review of psoriasis treatments promoted on the net. Many of these are scams. Some are just deceptive misinformation, others are potentially dangerous. Secrets are revealed wherever possible to spoil the marketing game. It's a shame that these hucksters prey on people desperately looking for a safe and effective treatment. Skip to: FDA Steroids Skin-Cap SkinZinc ... feedback Why is this page needed? Quackery is everywhere . With a few notable exceptions, commercial sites selling psoriasis treatments emphasize only the claimed benefits of their products and provide no support for those claims. They rarely mention risks, side effects, or offer an accurate list of ingredients so that consumers can make their own informed choice. The only public place to find this information has been in the psoriasis newsgroup, and the postings don't stay around long enough for newcomers to see them. By putting this information here on the web, the reviews will hopefully be as visible to the world as the commercial sites are now. One universal trait of the Hall of Pshame sites is that they raise unrealistic hopes of miracle cures and rapid clearing. Most psoriatics have become hardened to these tactics, but sometimes the sales pitch can be very convincing. "What have you got to lose?" is a common question. The fact is, that besides the money lost, the time wasted on an ineffective treatment could have been used to try something more realistic. The greatest loss is when a desperate person gets fooled again, and loses hope of ever finding something that works.

Derfor fremtræder psoriasispletterne i reglen røde og irriterede.

Psoriasis: What is it and How is it Treated? CONTENTS What Does this all Mean? The purpose of this handout is to give you some useful information about psoriasis and its treatment. At this time psoriasis cannot be cured but can be helped and improved with treatment. You may have had psoriasis for a long time and know a great deal about it, or you may have just found out that you have this condition. Some treatments you may have used before. It is important that you know all you can about psoriasis so that you can better understand the treatments and how to get the best possible results. What is Psoriasis? P SORIASIS IS A CHRONIC SCALING DISEASE of the skin. It may range from just a few spots anywhere on the body to large areas of involvement. It is not contagious or spreadable from one part of the body to another or from one person to another.
There is no blood test for psoriasis. The diagnosis is made by observation and examination of the skin. Sometimes microscopic examination of the skin (biopsy) is helpful where the changes are not typical or characteristic.
The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but hereditary and genetic factors are important. Psoriasis runs in families. This does not mean, however, that every child of a parent with psoriasis will develop psoriasis, but it is common that somewhere down the line psoriasis will appear in families. Psoriasis is not caused by allergies, infections, dietary deficiencies or excesses, or nervous tension.

Photodynamic Therapy for Psoriasis Originally prepared for the Canadian Psoriasis Foundation by: MD, FRCPC

A NEW FORM OF TREATMENT called "Photodynamic Therapy" has recently been approved in Canada, Japan, Holland, and the United States for patients with certain types of cancer involving the lung, bladder, and esophagus. Like PUVA therapy, photodynamic therapy (also known as "PDT") involves the administration of a drug followed by light exposure. In PDT, drugs known as porphyrins are administered intravenously into the body to sensitize diseased tissue to visible light. The affected tissue is then exposed to laser light in order to activate the porphyrin drug and cause chemical reactions in the tissue. The net result is selective tumor destruction. Several different drugs have been developed for PDT, but porfimer sodium (Photofrin ) is the only drug that has received official approval for routine use in patients, and only then for the treatment of certain cancers. Porfimer sodium has been developed by QLT Phototherapeutics Inc., which is a Canadian pharmaceutical company. Pilot research studies in patients have shown that porfimer sodium and light can also be useful for psoriasis, but there is a significant side effect-patients who receive porfimer sodium become profoundly sensitive to outdoor light for a six to eight week period. This limits the practical use of intravenous porfimer sodium as a photosensitizer for psoriasis.
