The major symptom is increased pressure within the skull (increased intracranial pressure). There is no evidence of tumor, infection, blocked drainage of the fluid surrounding the brain, or any other cause. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The cause for the condition is unknown. The following factors increase the risk:
    • Obesity Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), tetracycline, nitrofurantoin, isotretinoin, tamoxifen, naladixic acid, lithium, and the starting or stopping of steroids Vitamin A (too much or too little) Cushing’s disease Hypoparathyroidism Hypothyroidism Chronic renal failure Anemia
The condition occurs more frequently in women than men, particularly in pre-menopausal obese women. It is rare in infants.

Accutane has been associated with pseudotumor cerebri!
Under Federal Law, the manufacturer of a drug is required to revise its label to include a warning as soon as there is reasonable evidence of an association of a serious hazard with a drug.
The FDA has required Hoffmann-La Roche to change their label for Accutane many times. The most recent label states - Pseudotumor Cerebri: Accutane use has been associated with a number of cases of pseudotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension), some of which involved concomitant use of tetracyclines. Concomitant treatment with tetracyclines should therefore be avoided. Early signs and symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri include papilledema, headache, nausea and vomiting, and visual disturbances. Patients with these symptoms should be screened for papilledema and, if present, they should be told to discontinue Accutane immediately and be referred to a neurologist for further diagnosis and care.
Pursuant to FDA Rules and Regulation, the reporting of Adverse Side Effects is on a voluntary basis. In other words, the doctor, hospital, or other medical person or facility are not required by law to report an adverse side effect from a drug. The FDA reported that perhaps only one in one hundred side effects ever get reported. One could only imagine about how many serious Adverse Side Effects there are from taking Accutane, that have never been reported to anyone!

Purpose: Our specific aim is to assess major thrombophilic and hypofibrinolytic pathoetiologies of pseudotumor cerebri ('benign' intracranial hypertension). Our second specific aim is to determine whether treatment of the intracranial hypertension with Diamox will produce symptomatic relief. We postulate that when exogenous thrombophilic factors (estrogen-containing oral contraceptives, estrogens, corticosteroids) are superimposed on heritable thrombophilic and/or hypofibrinolytic coagulation disorders, multiple ischemic cerebral strokes occur. We postulate that as these strokes resolve, they leave a residual effect of increased intracranial pressure, either by virtue of reduced cerebral clearance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or increased production of CSF, or both. We expect that most patients seen by ophthalmologists with pseudotumor cerebri can be shown to have a coagulation disorder as the pathoetiology, particularly when exogenous estrogens are superimposed on a coagulation disorder. pseudotumor cerebri is een ziektebeeld met verhoogde hersendruk zonder dat ersprake is van een tumor. Hier worden symptomen en behandelingen besproken.
    http://www.nvvn.org/voorlichting/PTC_pseudotumor.html
    Pseudotumor Cerebri

We report 3 pediatric patients with SCD (1 patient with SCD-SC and 2 patients with SCD-SS) who presented with headache and were diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri (PC). All 3 patients had elevated opening pressures during a lumbar puncture with normal cerebrospinal fluid studies. Magnetic resonance imaging

Minocycline and Pseudotumor cerebri: The Well-Known but Well-Kept Secret
To the Editor. Minocycline, a synthetic derivative of tetracycline, is the most widely prescribed oral systemic antibiotic for acne vulgaris because it does not appear to induce resistance in Propionobacterium acnes and can be administered only once or twice a day. Interestingly, minocycline is lipophilic and penetrates the blood-brain barrier more readily than other tetracyclines, thus attaining higher cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels. Despite its widespread use among adolescents, it does not appear that adequate prospective studies have been published to investigate its specific effects on the maturing teenager.

    Abstract:
Objectives: Clinical insights concerning a remediable cause of pseudotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension) due to aspartame disease. Materials and Methods: Observations of six women with pseudotumor cerebri who consumed considerable aspartame products, especially "diet" sodas. Results: The ocular and other manifestations of aspartame disease disappeared or dramatically improved in all subjects after avoiding aspartame products, even obviating surgery. Conclusions. Aspartame disease should be considered in patients presenting with pseudotumor cerebri, especially weight-conscious young women. The associated clinical features and underlying mechanisms are reviewed with emphasis on chronic methanol toxicity. Aspartame disease caused by the use of products containing this chemical sweetener is a frequent but usually overlooked disorder. In the author's data base of persons so afflicted, six women developed pseudotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension). This appears to be the first report of such an association. The clinical and public health implications are significant. An estimated 70% of the United States adult population currently consumes aspartame products. The more common neurologic problems caused or aggravated by aspartame are noted in this discussion.
