Pseudotumor Cerebri
Pseudotumor cerebri, also called benign intracranial hypertension, literally means "false brain tumor." It is caused by increased pressure within the brain and is most common in women between the ages of 20 and 50. Symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri, which include headache, nausea, vomiting, and pulsating intracranial noises, closely mimic symptoms of brain tumors, possibly because of the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid placing pressure on the brain. Treatment for pseudotumor cerebri is generally symptomatic. Pressure may be controlled by removing excess fluid with repeated spinal taps or by shunting. Steroids may be prescribed to reduce swelling of brain tissue. Hyperosmotic drugs may be used to reduce fluid buildup. Once the diagnosis is made and the disorder is treated, pseudotumor cerebri generally has no serious consequences. If visual loss occurs, however, it may be premanent regardless of treatment. In some cases, pseudotumor cerebri recurs.

Sometimes there are differences of opinion among our members. This is good and I try not to allow these differences to come between us, but try to help all to understand that we were created with these differences and they should not cause division but are truly reasons to celebrate. Diversity in our disease makes each of us respond differently to treatments and diversity in our personal lives make us unique individuals. You are "UNIQUELY YOU" and not like any other. I love having people of every color and creed in out group. I hope you will visit here often and send me suggestions for improving "OUR" page. This site is intended to be a friendly site. It is intended to be a haven in the midst of the very impersonal World Wide Web and a refuge from the cruel world. I hope you will feel at home here and want to tell others about it. I will be featuring PTC patients on this site. I will use their stories and pictures (with their permission, of course) I have been unable to get any of my PTC Profile stories because the people I have asked, have been too ill. I do have some other stories in the works. Don't give up on coming back here for the new stuff. My computer was down for three weeks and that delayed things. But I am back on the job and looking forward to meeting YOU!

    From To Post aunt juju
My 11 year old son who weight was 247 is in the process of being dx with pseudotumor cerebri. He was found to have swollen optic nerves on a routin eye exam (eyes were dialated). We went from there to an opthologist who ordered a CT. Which came out fine, except for swollen optic nerves (7mm on one side and 8mm on the other). He went then to have a spinal tap, but after an hour was unable to get it complete. He may need to be put under (snowed) for that. He now weights 234lbs and is still on a diet and exercise program at home. He is having no other symptoms then the swelling; no headaches or nausea or anything (can't even till anything is wrong). My question is 1) Will this go away with weight loss? 2) Does he NEED the spinal tap? 3) What type of treatment will he need (surg/medical)? Definition
Pseudotumor cerebri is a reversible process affecting the brain that appears to be but is not a tumor. The major symptom is increased pressure within the skull (increased intracranial pressure). There is no evidence of tumor, infection, blocked drainage of the fluid surrounding the brain, or any other cause.

    Causes
The cause for the condition is unknown. The following factors increase the risk:

General Discussion Intracranial Hypertension (Pseudotumor cerebri) is characterized by increased pressure inside the skull. Intracranial means inside the skull and hypertension means high fluid pressure. Basically, the pressure of the fluid that surrounds the brain (cerebrospinal fluid or CSF) is too high. Elevated CSF pressure produces severe headache and often visual difficulties, which, if left untreated can result in loss of vision or blindness. Pseudotumor Cerebri and Benign Intracranial Hypertension are both former names for Intracranial Hypertension (IH) which are now considered inaccurate. These names do not adequately describe the disorder and downplay the seriousness of IH. There are two categories of IH: Primary Intracranial Hypertension and Secondary Intracranial Hypertension.

Definition: Pseudotumor cerebri is a benign process affecting the brain that appears to be but is not a tumor. It is characterized by increased intracranial pressure and normal brain ventricle size. There is no evidence of tumor, infection, blocked drainage of the fluid surrounding the brain, or any other cause.
Alternative Names: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension; Benign intracranial hypertension
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The major symptom of pseudotumor is increased pressure within the skull (increased intracranial pressure). The cause for the condition itself is unknown, and the diagnosis is made when other health conditions are ruled out. The mechanism causing the elevated ICP ( increased intracranial pressure ) is not well understood. Possible causes of pseudotumor cerebri include a defect in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) absorption, increased cerebral swelling ( edema ), or increased cerebral blood volumes.

    Benign intracranial hypertension
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Pseudotumor cerebri Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) , sometimes called benign intracranial hypertension (BIH) or pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is a neurological disorder that is characterized by increased intracranial pressure (ICP) , in the absence of a tumor or other intracranial pathology. Radiologic imaging scans are, as a rule, normal in IIH save for the finding of small or slit-like cerebral ventricles, and what may appear to be an 'empty' sella turcica (caused by flattening of the pituitary under pressure). Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear fluid which surrounds and circulates through the brain and spinal cord - It is to the fluid pressure of the CSF that the concept of 'intracranial pressure' refers. The chronic pressure increase in IIH is, as the word "idiopathic" indicates, of uncertain etiology; Most researchers believe that the body's ability to absorb CSF is somehow impaired in those individuals with IIH. A less likely possibility (one that is now generally dismissed) is that of CSF overproduction. Many scientists and doctors believe that there is also some degree of brain swelling or engorgement. The terms "benign" and "pseudotumor" have often been used for this disorder to make clear that the increased ICP is not caused by a tumor or malignancy. However, these terms belie the significance and potential morbidity of the disorder - Thus, it is most appropriately referred to as IIH, and not by its other names. Cases of increased ICP with a known cause can be called
