Living with Pseudotumor Cerebri
Pseudotumor cerebri is a relatively rare disease. (We estimate there are about 12,000 people living in the United States with this disease.) The majority of PTC patients are women of child-bearing age with a tendency to be overweight. However, there are PTC patients of all ages- male and female, and all weight ranges- from obese to downright skinny.  Pseudotumor cerebri is also an individualized disease. Each person responds differently regarding symptoms, treatment, and side effects. There is no "standard" for how the condition will appear, how long it will last, whether
it will come back, or the degree it will impact your life.
There are people who have success with medication or treatment, and their PTC goes away. There are others who become disabled with this condition, and
treatment or surgery is ineffective.

Pseudotumor Cerebri Symptoms
The common symptoms are headache, dizziness and impaired vision.
Headache is often worse on awakening, and can be intensified by coughing, laughing, bending over, crying, and increased physical activity.
Impaired vision shows up in several ways. It can be visual blurring, brief moments of dimming or loss of vision called transient visual obscurations (TVO's), small specks appearing or vision distortions (items moving up or down).
Blindness can occur.
Other symptoms affecting PTC patients include: shoulder/arm pain, neck pain, memory problems, awkward coordination, muscle weakness, fatigue, back pain, and depression.
Possible symptoms include dizziness, hearing loss, ringing in the ears or noises within the head called tinnitus Regarding headaches: a study showed 92% of patients interviewed had headaches; 93% of those with headaches said it was the most severe headache they had ever experienced. The head pain was described as a pulsing headache that kept increasing in intensity. Another description was a "pressure" headache, resembling a percolator. Seventy four percent of those with headaches had it on a daily basis. Can also experience neck stiffness or nausea.

Please keep in mind throughout this site, IH affects every person differently. Do not let the experiences you read of some frighten you . Typically those who seek out support online are the more severe cases. Personally I experience bouts of IH off and on, but was able to attend school full-time, work, and run this site (I completed my Associates in Science Degree, Occupational Therapy Assistant, May 2005). Many may experience remission altogether. *What is Intracranial Hypertension?
Intracranial Hypertension is an extremely painful and often disabling Neurological Disorder, which can result in loss of vision and even blindness. There is nothing Pseudo or Benign about an IH patients very real experience (which often mimics a brain tumor), not to mention the serious threat to his or her vision and overall quality of life. IH is a rare condition affecting approximately one to two people of 100,000, most often women. The "usual" onset is the mid-twenties, though people of all ages are susceptible (and there isn't much "usual" about this condition - it's very much individualized). Recent weight gain has been associated with IH in some patients, though the physiological factors which would then cause IH, still have not been proven or discovered. All of this information has been gathered through too few clinical trials and studies. If you are an IH patient, participation in the

Pseudotumor Cerebri
What is pseudotumor cerebri? Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition in which there is:
  • An increase in the pressure of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), leading most commonly to headache. No detectable problem in the CSF (pressure aside) or in the anatomy of the brain and spinal cord.
  • The cause of the increased CSF pressure is an unsolved mystery. What is pseudo about it? Pseudotumor cerebri mimics a brain tumor in elevating the CSF pressure. In this respect, it is like a brain tumor (tumor cerebri, in Latin). Pseudotumor cerebri is also called benign intracranial hypertension (high pressure within the head). Who are common characteristics of patients with pseudotumor cerebri?

    Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension
    (Pseudotumor Cerebri)
Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension is a condition of high pressure in the fluid around the brain. It is also known as pseudotumor cerebri because there are some of the signs and symptoms of a brain tumor without a brain tumor being present (pseudo meaning false). The space around the brain is filled with a water-like fluid. (Fig 1.) If there is too much of this fluid present, (for example, if not enough being absorbed) (Fig 2), the pressure around the brain rises. This is because the space containing the fluid cannot expand. It is this high pressure that produces the symptoms of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (idiopathic means unknown cause; intracranial means inside the head; hypertension means the fluid is under high pressure). A condition of increased pressure within the brain cavity, pseudotumor cerebri usually manifests itself as a bulging fontanelle in an otherwise happy and healthy infant, or as a sudden onset of strabismus in a child. It is also more properly known now as benign intracranial hypertension. This condition may be associated with some medicines (the antibiotic tetracycline, used in infants years ago but no longer, was the most common drug-related cause), may arise as a complication of mastoiditis , or may just happen mysteriously. Because intracranial hypertension might not have a benign cause , if you should notice these symptoms immediate consultation with your doctor is of course in order.
