Pseudotumor Cerebri Informational Homepage
Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) or Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is a disease where there is increased intracranial pressure that mimics a brain tumor. This condition, which affects mainly women of childbearing age, is not widely known and little information is currently available about it. This web site will attempt to increase the availability of information about this disease. This site will be changed and updated as new information becomes available.

Pseudotumor Cerebri Signs and Symptoms
Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) is encountered most frequently in young, overweight women between the ages of 20 and 45. Headache is the most common presenting complaint, occurring in more than 90 percent of cases. Dizziness, nausea, and vomiting may also be encountered, but typically there are no alterations of consciousness or higher cognitive function. Tinnitus, or a "rushing" sound in the ears, is another frequent complaint. Visual symptoms are present in up to 70 percent of all patients with PTC, and include transient visual obscurations, general blurriness, and intermittent horizontal diplopia. These symptoms tend to worsen in association with Valsalva maneuvers and changes in posture. Reports of ocular pain, particularly with extreme eye movements, have also been noted. Pathophysiology
Pseudotumor cerebri is a syndrome disorder defined clinically by four criteria: (1) elevated intracranial pressure as demonstrated by lumbar puncture; (2) normal cerebral anatomy, as demonstrated by neuroradiographic evaluation; (3) normal cerebrospinal fluid composition; and (4) signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, including papilledema. While the mechanism of PTC is not fully understood, most experts agree that the disorder results from poor absorption of cerebrospinal fluid by the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The subsequent increase in extracerebral fluid volume leads to elevated intracranial pressure. However, because the process is slow and insidious, there is ample time for the ventricular system to compensate and this explains why there is no dilation of the cerebral ventricles in PTC. Increased intracranial pressure induces stress on the peripheral aspects of the brain, including the cranial nerves. Stagnation of axoplasmic flow in the optic nerve (CN II) results in papilledema and transient visual obscurations; when the abducens nerve (CN VI) is involved, the result is intermittent nerve palsy and diplopia.

Intracranial Hypertension
(IH) is the general name for the disorders in which the cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the skull is too high. (Intracranial means inside of the skull . Hypertension refers to high fluid pressure . Old names for IH include Benign Intracranial Hypertension and Pseudotumor Cerebri). The Intracranial Hypertension Research Foundation (IHRF) funds and supports medical research to develop better therapies to control Intracranial Hypertension (IH) while ultimately seeking a cure for IH. The Foundation also provides support, education, and encouragement for IH patients , their families , and medical professionals We are the only non-profit organization in the world devoted to supporting research to find a cure for IH
IHRF is proud to introduce the Intracranial Hypertension Awareness pin.

Pathophysiology Pseudotumor cerebri is a syndrome disorder that involves elevated intracranial pressure in the absence of mass lesion, hydrocephalus, hemorrhage or other identifiable intracranial pathology. The Dandy Criteria (originally penned by Walter E. Dandy in 1937) delineates the diagnostic paradigm for PTC. Individuals such as J. Lawton Smith and Michael Wall have modified these criteria over the years. Most recently, Friedman and Jacobson published their diagnostic criteria, which includes the following:

Is there any treatment? What is the prognosis? What research is being done? ... Organizations What is Pseudotumor Cerebri? Pseudotumor cerebri literally means "false brain tumor." It is likely due to high pressure caused by the buildup or poor absorption of cerebrospinal fluid in the subarachnoid space surrounding the brain. The disorder is most common in women between the ages of 20 and 50. Symptoms of pseudotumor cerebri, which include headache, nausea, vomiting, and pulsating intracranial noises, closely mimic symptoms of brain tumors. Is there any treatment?

Living with Pseudotumor Cerebri
Pseudotumor cerebri is a relatively rare disease. (We estimate there are about 12,000 people living in the United States with this disease.) The majority of PTC patients are women of child-bearing age with a tendency to be overweight. However, there are PTC patients of all ages- male and female, and all weight ranges- from obese to downright skinny.  Pseudotumor cerebri is also an individualized disease. Each person responds differently regarding symptoms, treatment, and side effects. There is no "standard" for how the condition will appear, how long it will last, whether
it will come back, or the degree it will impact your life.
There are people who have success with medication or treatment, and their PTC goes away. There are others who become disabled with this condition, and
treatment or surgery is ineffective.

Your doctor thinks you may have pseudotumor cerebri. This is a condition in which high pressure inside your head can cause problems with vision and headache. In the days before CT and MRI scans, doctors who noted swelling of the optic disc (the beginning of the optic nerve in the back of the eye) were concerned about the possibility of a tumor within the head. Patients with optic disc swelling but no evidence of a tumor were said to have "Pseudotumor." Anatomy
The brain and spinal cord are bathed in a clear fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
