Medical Conditions: Prostatitis
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland, mostly due to bacterial infection. If left untreated, an inflamed or infected prostate can cause serious genitourinary problems.
Prostatitis affects approximately 50% of all men, and is the most common urological disorder in men over 50, and the third most common in men under 50.
There are four main types of prostatitis, involving bacterial infection or otherwise, each with its own symptoms. Common symptoms, however, include:
- Urinary obstruction - Fever - Painful ejaculation - Pain of the lower back, or the perineum (space between the testes and anus)
The type of prostatitis is found and diagnosed using a digital rectal exam, urine samples or a prostate massage. Once the type of disease is known, an appropriate course of treatment can be chosen. The most common treatments are:
- Medication (for bacterial infection) - Surgery to remove part or all of the prostate gland, depending on how severe the symptoms are. It can be performed via the urethra without having to make any incisions, or, if the whole prostate must be removed, by normal surgery.

About Prostatitis What are the causes of prostatitis? Bacterial infection within the prostate gland is the cause of prostatitis in most cases. Very rarely it may be caused by infection with another type of micro-organism. Infection within the urethra usually occurs at the same time as prostatitis. Sometimes no cause for the infection is found. Prostatitis can be grouped into three types, depending on the cause and pattern of the disease process.
  • Acute bacterial prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection and occurs very suddenly. Chronic bacterial prostatitis is caused by infections that continue to occur over a long period. Chronic pelvic pain syndrome is diagnosed when the symptoms of prostatitis are present but there is no clearly identifiable cause of the infection.

It may or may not be associated with an infection within the prostate gland. It has been estimated that about one in every six men may experience prostatitis some time during their lives . Prostatitis can occur at any age in the male population, but occurs more commonly in the under 50 age group. Prostatitis is not a life-threatening condition but it can be a very painful disorder.

Abstract
The principal aim of a population-based cross-sectional survey was to generate information on the lifetime occurrence of prostatitis in Finnish men and their exposure to the disease, and also on the influence of prostatitis-related fears and disturbances on their sexual life. A second aim was to develop and clinically validate a new diagnostic tool for differential diagnosis between the forms of chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), especially between patients belonging to categories IIIA and IIIB in the new NIH (National Institutes of Health) clinical classification. 17% of the men with chronic prostatitis reported a constant fear of undetected prostate cancer. Erectile dysfunction was reported by 43% of the symptomatic men and decreased libido by 24%. Self-assessment of personality showed that the men with prostatitis were more often busy and nervous and had a meticulous attitude to life and problems than were the non-symptomatic men.

Jock Itch and Prostatitis
Jock Itch Jock Itch is an infection of the groin by the fungus which causes athlete's foot. The fungus is more likely to grow in conditions of increased heat and humidity common among male athletes who wear jock-straps. However, this condition is not limited to male athletes; women can also be infected. Some of the symptoms are burning, itching, and red, scaly lesions. Treatment involves the applications of such medicines such as Micatin, Cruex, Desenex, Lotrimin, or Tinactin until the rash clears; the infection may reoccur if the medication is not applied long enough. In addition, the groin area should be kept dry and clean and absorbent cotton underwear should be worn. Prostatitis Prostatitis is an inflammation or infection of the prostate, the organ between the bladder and the penis through which urine passes and the source of fluid found in semen. Prostatitis may result from a bacterial infection or sexually transmitted disease and is treatable by a course of antibiotics. The symptoms of Prostatitis include burning, discharge, fever, chills, and difficulty urinating.

What is going on in the body? The prostate gland is located at the base of a man's penis. It secretes substances into the semen that aid in fertility. The fluid in the prostate is normally sterile. Bacteria from urine can enter the prostate through the urethra. The urethra is the tube through which urine flows from the bladder to the tip of the penis. These bacteria can multiply and rapidly cause bacterial prostatitis. Acute bacterial prostatitis is almost always accompanied by an infection in the urinary tract from the same organism. What are the causes and risks of the infection?

Alternate Names : Chronic Bacterial Prostatitis Pictures and Images Attribution Chronic prostatitis is a low-grade bacterial infection of the prostate gland. It can last a long time and cause recurrent urinary tract infections What is going on in the body? The prostate gland in males makes fluids that are part of the semen. Normally, the contents of the prostate are sterile, that is, free of bacteria and other organisms. The prostate can become infected in acute bacterial prostatitis . If it is not treated completely, some bacteria can remain in the prostate. This causes chronic bacterial prostatitis. The bacteria can be extremely difficult to kill with medications once the acute infection is over. They can infect the urine over and over again. This is what brings on the episodes of symptoms. The chronic disease usually evolves from the acute form. But often there is no history of the acute infection. What are the causes and risks of the infection?

General Goal: To know the major cause(s) of this disease, how this disease is acquired, and the major manifestations this disease. Specific Educational Objectives The student should be able to: 1. recite the common means by which this disease is acquired and identify the major disease manifestations. 2. identify the various types of prostatitis based on clinical presentation and testing. 3. describe which forms of prostatitis are most amenable to treatment. Know which patients with prostatitis that you should NOT obtain prostatic secretions and why. Reading: Mosby's Color Atlas and Text of Infectious Diseases by Christopher P. Conlon and David R. Overview
Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland. The term prostatitis describes a wide spectrum of disorders ranging from acute bacterial infection to chronic pain syndromes. Prostatitis describes a wide number of maladies with variable etiologies, prognoses and treatments. Unfortunately, these conditions have not been well studied, and most recommendations for treatment are based primarily on case series and anecdotal experience. Prostatitis can be a challenging condition to treat. Etiology depends on the classification of the prostatitis. However, most of the cases of prostatitis due to an infection are the result of gram negative bacteria.
