Benign prostatic hyperplasia
Benign prostatic enlargement, BPH Benign prostatic hypertrophy is an increase in size of the prostate gland that is so common as to be normal with advancing age and there is no malignancy present. Enlargement is by an increase in the number of glandular units, called hyperplasia , as is typical of glandular enlargement, rather than a constant number of units that increase in size as in muscle hypertrophy . It seems likely that the nature of BPH is a failure of apoptosis and that some of the drugs used to treat it may induce that process.
The term prostatism has fallen from favour to describe the symptoms of BPH and the term lower urinary tract symptoms or LUTS is preferred. BPH, LUTS and bladder outlet obstruction are not entirely synonymous.
The prostate secretes about 70% of the volume of seminal fluid. It is hormone dependent and BPH does not occur in castrated men.

Enlarged Prostate
Male reproductive anatomy BPH Prostatectomy - series TURP - series Definition: The prostate gland produces the fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. As the prostate enlarges, which happens to almost all men as they get older, it can press on the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). This causes problems with urination. Prostate enlargement is often called benign prostatic hypertrophy or hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancer and it does not put you at increased risk for prostate cancer. Alternative Names: BPH; Benign prostatic hypertrophy (hyperplasia); Prostate - enlarged Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The actual cause of prostate enlargement is unknown. In addition to age, overgrowth of the prostate seems to require normal function of the testicles, which produce testosterone. This is known because men who have had their testicles removed at a young age (for example, for testicular cancer) do not develop BPH. Similarly, if the testicles are removed after a man develops BPH, the prostate begins to shrink in size. The likelihood of developing an enlarged prostate increases with age. In fact, BPH is so common that it has been said, "All men will have an enlarged prostate if they live long enough!" A small amount of prostate enlargement is present in many men over age 40 and more than 90% of men over age 80. No risk factors have been identified other than having normally functioning testicles.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
Definition: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is sometimes referred to as an "enlarged prostate." BPH is a condition where benign (non-cancerous) nodules enlarge the prostate gland. The prostate gland produces the liquid in which sperm are expelled from the penis.
Alternative Names: BPH; Benign prostatic hypertrophy; Enlarged prostate; Prostate - enlarged
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The actual cause of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is unknown. However, men who have had their testicles removed do not develop BPH and, after castration, BPH has been observed to regress. In other words, the presence of normally functioning testicles appears to be necessary for the development of BPH. Abnormally growing prostate tissue may use male hormones differently than normal prostate tissue. Although this tissue growth is non-cancerous, as the tumor grows larger it can obstruct the urethra and interfere with the normal flow of urine.
The incidence of BPH increases with advancing age. BPH is so common that it has been said, "All men will have benign prostatic hyperplasia if they live long enough!" A small amount of BPH is present in 80% of men over 40 years old and over 95% of men 80 years old. No risk factors have been identified other than having normally functioning testicles.

What is benign prostatic hyperplasia? (BPH)
The prostate is a gland the size of a chestnut. It is only present in men, and it is situated under the bladder surrounding the urethra, the passageway that takes the urine to the outside. The gland produces seminal fluid, which is mixed with sperm to make semen.
With age, the gland may begin to grow - this happens to most men. The growth may eventually cause problems with urination, because the gland pinches off the urethra as it increases its size.
The growth in itself is harmless and so the condition is called benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). It occurs most often in men over the age of 60. Up to 30 per cent of men in their 70s have BPH that causes them symptoms.

Benign Prostate Hypertrophy
The prostate gland is located just below a male's bladder and surrounds the top portion of the tube that drains urine from the bladder (urethra). The gland's primary function is to produce most of the fluids in semen, the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a product derived from peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and related esters. Evaluation of MDA in serum represents a non-invasive biomarker of oxidative stress. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a sensitive marker for prostatic hypertrophy and cancer. We analyzed MDA serum levels to evaluate the oxidative stress in BPH. To this end, 22 BPH patients and 22 healthy donors were enrolled. Data show an increase of MDA level in BPH patients and a positive correlation between PSA and MDA levels. In conclusion, we describe a previously unknown relationship between PSA and MDA as an index of inflammation and oxidative stress in BPH. Keywords and phrases: Benign prostate hypertrophy, Malondialdehyde, Prostate-specific antigen.

Men who experience signs and symptoms of a prostate obstruction resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are three times more likely than other men to develop chronic kidney disease, according to findings of a Mayo Clinic study published in this month's edition of Kidney International "This is the first study on the topic to sample the general community," says Andrew Rule, M.D., the Mayo Clinic kidney specialist who conducted the study with epidemiologist Steven Jacobsen, M.D., Ph.D. "Symptomatic and non-symptomatic men were compared, unlike clinical trials and studies in a urology practice, which tend to represent only symptomatic men."
