Introduction What are the advantages of orchiectomy? What are the disadvantages of orchiectomy? ... Some things to think about
    Introduction
Certainly until the late 1980s or even the early 1990s there was no doubt whatsoever that orchiectomy was the gold standard for the hormonal treatment of advanced prostate cancer. By carrying out the surgical removal of a man's testes, the physician was able to completely shut down the synthesis of testosterone, thus removing testosterone stimulation of the prostate cancer growth and progression of the disease. Even today the medical community still considers the development of every new form of treatment for advanced prostate cancer in terms of its effectiveness and safety compared to orchiectomy.
What are the advantages of orchiectomy?

    Pc Spes and Prostate Cancer
I'm Jean Curie, a 56 year old man with advanced prostate cancer. I was diagnosed in august '98 with advanced prostate cancer with metastases to all the bones except the head. After the conventional hormonal treatment I became hormon refractory and stopped responding in april '99. My PSA rose from 18.7 to 112 in a few month's. Then I discovered PC SPES, it literally saved my life. My current PSA (02/09/00) is 0.5 and the only treatment is 3x3 capsules of PC SPES and 15 grams Modified Citrus Pectin each day. I know people who are using pc-spes for years, unfortunately there are also people who stopped responding to pc-spes after a certain period of time. Pc-spes has lengthened my survival time now with almost 1 year. UPDATE 15/10/02 : pc-spes and spes are not available anymore because Botaniclab has closed. I am using now Prostasol with imupros, my current PSA is 6.1 UPDATE 12/03/03 : pc-spes and spes available again (look at link where to buy). My current psa is 8.4 .

    47. Red Wine May Keep Prostate Cancer Cells In Check
A Spanish study published in a British medical journal finds that polyphenols found in wine may keep prostate cancer cells from proliferating.
    http://www.aim-digest.com/gateway/pages/cancer/articles/prostate_check.htm
Page last updated: Wednesday, March 30, 2005 Red wine may keep prostate cancer cells in check Researchers from Getafe University in Madrid, and published in BJU International found that five different polyphenols, antoxidants present in high levels in red wine, inhibited the growth of prostate cancer cells in a test tube and encouraged cancer cells to "commit suicide"-a natural process called apoptosis. The findings, if confirmed by larger studies, may help to explain the higher rates of prostate cancer in the US and non-Mediterranean European countries, according to Dr. I. Romero and colleagues. The rate of prostate cancer in Mediterranean countries, where intake of red wine and other polyphenol-rich foods - namely fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, is high, tends to be lower. The study examined the effect of five polyphenols found in red wine, namely gallic acid, tannic acid, morin, quercetin and rutin -on prostate cancer cells. The researchers added varying amounts of these compounds to a dish containing prostate cancer cells. All five compounds inhibited cell proliferation and improved apoptosis, compared with an inactive compound, after 24 hours. The results point to a need for studies investigating the effects of these compounds in humans, with the potential goal of developing recommendations for their use in cancer prevention,"The Mediterranean diet is considered to be protective against the endocrine cancers (including prostate cancer), and features a low animal-fat and meat content, with a high intake of fresh fruit, vegetables, pasta and wine," states Romero "Prostate cancer is the second-deadliest form of cancer for US men, after lung cancer, according to the American Cancer Society".

Study: Mineral selenium cuts risk of prostate cancer
    August 22, 1998
Web posted at: 8:58 a.m. EDT (1258 GMT) From CNN Health Correspondent Elizabeth Cohen ATLANTA (CNN) Some 40,000 men die every year from prostate cancer, but a new study says what a man eats may help prevent the disease. The study, published by the National Cancer Institute, found men who had the highest intakes of the mineral selenium cut their cancer rates by one-half to two-thirds compared to men with the lowest intakes of selenium. "The notion that vitamins and minerals might prevent prostate cancer is a particularly exciting thing," said Dr. Philip Taylor of the National Cancer Institute. Selenium is found in fish, meats, grains and seeds in varying amounts. But it is also available in supplements. Researchers have found that taking 200 micrograms a day cuts the risk of getting prostate cancer.
