Progeria:Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome (HGPS)
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome is commonly referred to as Progeria or HGPS. Progeria is a genetic condition that occurs in 1 of every 4 to 8 million newborns. While there are different forms of Progeria , the classic type is Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome. This syndrome was named after the English doctors Jonathan Hutchinson and Hastings Gilford who first diagnosed it.
What is Progeria?
Progeria or HGPS is a rare, fatal genetic condition characterized by an appearance of accelerated aging in children. The name is Greek and means "prematurely old."

Progeria: 'prematurely old'
Both Werner's Syndrome and HGPS are examples of progeria, which means 'prematurely old.' Progeria isn't exactly rapid aging; people with progeria just look and perhaps feel like they're quickly growing old. Back to top
What's Werner's Syndrome?
Werner's Syndrome is a rare illness that appears to age the sufferer at twice the normal rate. Those who suffer from Werner's Syndrome show full symptoms in their twenties, and die usually in their thirties or forties, gray-haired and wizened, with multiple conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. A DREAM!
Progeria In 1981, the Sunshine Foundation had been in existence for five years and had handled approximately 500 special dreams of seriously ill, chronically ill, and physically challenged children. It was brought to Sunshine's attention via a newspaper article that a young boy in South Africa, named Fransie, had a dream to visit Pinocchio. The inspiration for this dream came from this boy seeing himself in a mirror. Because of his wooden appearance, he felt in some way related to Pinocchio.

What is Progeria?
Progeria, or Hutchinson Gilford Progeria syndrome, is an extremely rare, fatal genetic condition of childhood with striking features resembling premature aging. The word Progeria is derived from the Greek meaning “prematurely old”. Hutchinson Gilford Progeria accelerates the process of aging to about eight times the normal rate. Because of this accelerated aging, a child with Hutchinson Gilford Progeria that is ten years old will have similar respiratory, cardiovascular, and arthritic conditions of that of an eighty year old. Hutchinson Gilford Progeria has a reported incidence of about 1 in 8 million newborns. It affects both sexes equally and all races. In the past 15 years, children with Progeria have been reported all over the world, including in Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Cuba, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Poland, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South America, South Korea, Switzerland, Turkey, the US, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yugoslavia. Hutchinson Gilford Progeria is one of the world's rarest diseases. There are only about 40 known cases throughout the world to this date. There has been only about 100 reported cases since the first diagnosis by Jonathan Hutchinson in 1886 and Hastings Gilford in 1904. Although the time of onset of more definitive symptoms varies from case to case, generally by the end of the first year there is noticeable growth retardation and the appearance of physical features commonly associated with Hutchinson Gilford Progeria.

SITUATION
Within one year of beginning research, a group of leading scientists from the PRF Genetics Consortium, including scientists from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), identified the gene that causes Progeria.  This discovery was not only a major breakthrough for children suffering from Progeria, but potentially held answers to the mysteries of heart disease and stroke. Prior to the publication of the gene study in Nature , the Foundation approached Spectrum to help maintain media focus on PRF throughout the joint announcement with NIH.  OBJECTIVE
Spectrum’s goal was to properly position PRF as the driving force behind the gene discovery, and as a scientific resource and trusted advisor to the Progeria community.  We also sought to find a balance between the hard science/PRF story and Scott, Leslie and Sam’s personal story. PROGRAM
Spectrum worked closely with Nature and NIH to ensure proper media outreach coordination, embargo and publication dates, distribution and other planning and outreach logistics.  With only three days notice, the Spectrum team pulled together a joint press conference with NIH, to announce the major scientific breakthrough.  Spectrum implemented an aggressive program plan, which included development of the press kit and background materials, and production of b-roll footage of Scott, Leslie and Sam and sound bites from Francis Collins, MD, PhD, director of NHGRI and senior author of the study.  After developing talking points and media training key PRF spokespeople, Spectrum conducted aggressive outreach efforts to drive media to the event.  We also organized interviews for the Foundation’s spokespeople, including a child with Progeria who was honored as PRF’s first Youth Ambassador.
