Introduction: Immune disorders
Immune disorders: The immune system helps the body defend against various microbes and pollutants. However, the immune system itself can have various failings. An impaired immune system is called immunocompromise and can leave the body vulnerable to various viral, bacterial, or fungal opportunistic infections . Causes of immune deficiency can include various illnesses such as viruses, chronic illness, or immune system illnesses (especially AIDS The other type of immune disorder involves an over-active immune response. There are several different classes of diseases from an excessive response by the immune system:
  • Allergies - a true allergy to a substance or food is caused by the immune response.

Primary Immunodeficiency
C O N T E N T S Introduction What is Primary Immunodeficiency? The Immune Defenses Genes and PI ... Glossary
I N T R O D U C T I O N M There are over 70 different types of PIs. Each type has somewhat different symptoms, depending on which parts of the immune defense system are deficient. Some deficiencies are deadly, while some are mild. But they all have one thing in common: they may open the door to multiple infections. In the more severe forms of PI, germs which cause only mild infections in people with healthy immune systems may cause severe or life-threatening infections. Although infections are the hallmark of PIs, they are not always the only health problem, or even the main one. Some PIs are associated with other immune system disorders, such as anemia, arthritis, or autoimmune diseases. Other PIs involve more than the immune system; some, for instance, are associated with symptoms involving the heart, digestive tract, or the nervous system. Some PIs retard growth and increase the risk of cancer. Today, thanks to rapid advances in medicine, many PI diseases can be successfully treated or even cured. With proper treatment, most people with PIs are not only surviving once-deadly diseases, they are usually able to lead normal lives. Children usually can go to school, mix with playmates, and take part in sports. Most adults with PI are leading productive lives in their communities.

  • To understand the presentation, manifestations, and diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency diseases
  • To learn how to best use immunologic tests in clinical practice
  • To understand the approaches to management of immunodeficiency diseases
This work was supported by grants AI-43310 and HL-63070 from the National Institutes of Health and by the department of internal medicine, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City. Preview : Immunodeficiency disease often becomes apparent early in life. It disables the body's intricate system of defense against pathogens, resulting in myriad disorders and potential complications. In this article, the authors explain why immune deficiency occurs, how it is expressed, when to suspect an immunodeficiency disease, and how to evaluate and manage it.

primary Immund Deficiency (PID) is a genetic disorder that is passed along family There are actualy over 70 recognised primary immune deficiencies.

What is Primary Immune Deficency?
Primary Immune Deficiency Is NOT AIDS
Additionally PID is not communicable. In my case it is the result of a simple birth defect.
It is amazing that we have to put a disclamer on it because people hear "Immune Deficiency" and immediatly jump to the conclusion that it is AIDS/HIV. Primary Immund Deficiency (PID) is a genetic disorder that is passed along family lines. Many of the How's and why's of the disease are still unknown. PID is actually a term that refers to many different types of Immune Deficiencies. Some of these PID's are more serious than others. We have a lot of work to do on overcoming these disorders, but we must (and will!) find a way of reversing the effects in our own bodies and preventing it in our children. I am sorry that this is all the time I have to say at this time, but I must tent to other maters. Please Return Soon. The remainder of this page is at the editors for revew.

NIAID Initiative Addresses Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases
The study of primary immunodeficiency diseasesdisorders caused by inherited flaws in the immune system that increase susceptibility to infectionshas been bolstered by a $12.8 million initiative sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The initiative establishes the Primary Immunodeficiency Research Consortium (PIRC), a coalition of the world's most prominent researchers in the field of primary immunodeficiency diseases, to help prioritize and coordinate research directions and develop new resources for the study of these comparatively rare disorders.
The initiative is co-sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It is an outcome of a 2001 NIH advisory panel's recommendations to accelerate basic and clinical research in primary immunodeficiency diseases and to attract new investigators to the field.
"Until now, a relative scarcity of study subjects has limited a researcher's options for investigating these lesser known diseases," says Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the NIAID. "The consortium will help advance our understanding by focusing research priorities, uniting established researchers with new investigators, funding small-scale clinical and preclinical projects, and creating or expanding research resources, including a cell line repository and Web-based patient registry to which all researchers will have access."
