About Primary Immune Deficiencies
What is a Primary Immune Deficiency Disease? Primary immune deficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly. In contrast to secondary immune deficiency disease in which the immune system is compromised by factors outside the immune system, such as viruses or chemotherapy, the primary immune deficiency diseases are caused by intrinsic or genetic defects in the immune system. There are a wide variety of primary immune deficiencies. The World Health Organization recognizes nearly 100 primary immune deficiency disease including X-linked Agammaglobulinemia (Bruton's Disease), Common Variable Immune Deficiency, Selective IgA Deficiency, and Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (boy-in-the-bubble disease). Some disorders, such as Selective IgA Deficiency can be quite common, occurring as often as 1/500 to 1/1000 individuals. Others, such as Severe Combined Immune Deficiency, may be as rare as one individual affected per million. Untreated primary immune deficiencies may be characterized by frequent life-threatening infections and debilitating illnesses. Because of advances in our medical understanding and treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases, individuals who in the past would not have survived childhood are now able to live nearly normal lives. Many individuals affected by primary immune deficiency diseases require life long therapies including intravenous gamma globulin infusions, antibiotic therapies, or bone marrow transplantation. The Immune Deficiency Foundation is dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of primary immune deficiency diseases through research and education.

For Patients with Rare Immune Disorders, IDF Weekend Program Offers Hope for Some, New Treatment Options for Others
Retreat in Hawley, Pennsylvania Offers Education, Life Management Skills and Social Activities to Patients who Rarely Meet Others with Their Same Diagnoses For Immediate Release (TOWSON, MARYLAND, March 22, 2004) - Judith Reiss-Stoll, a speech language pathologist at a major rehabilitation center, knew something was terribly wrong when she began catching all of her client's illnesses. After battling years of repeated and severe infections, Judith was finally diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID). Caused by a genetic defect in her immune system, the disease interferes with her body's ability to produce antibodies, making her susceptible to the numerous illnesses surrounding her. Judith began treatment with IGIV, a blood plasma product that replaces antibodies in the immune system. The treatments are generally administered every three to four weeks. But the therapy, while effective, produced uncomfortable side effects. She experienced fatigue, vomiting, headaches and high fevers. Weakened by illness, but needing to research her immune deficiency, Judith received much-needed support from her husband, Marc. Together they teamed up to learn about more about the disease and its treatments.

    Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis
Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare disorder usually affecting infants and young children, but it can occur at any age. While the exact cause of HLH is unknown, it is felt to be caused by a disorder of immune system regulation, which leads to the activation of infection fighting cells called histiocytes and lymphocytes. Their normal function is to travel throughout the body and destroy foreign material and fight infections. Patients with HLH have too many of these activated histiocytes and they begin to accumulate in normal tissue and cause inflammation and damage to a variety of organs. Common sites of involvement include the bone marrow, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and brain. There are two main types of HLH, the familial form and the secondary form. The familial form of HLH (FHL) is genetic, and families who have more than one child with HLH will be diagnosed with this form. In these families, there will be a 25% risk that each subsequent sibling will develop FHL usually within the first 2 years of life. The secondary form of HLH develops secondary to abnormal activation of the immune system, which can occur after certain infections or after the use of drugs which suppress the immune system. It is very difficult to tell these two forms apart without a previously affected sibling. However, early age of onset is suggestive of the familial form and onset in older children is more common in the secondary form and there may be an association with a recently detected infection. It is important to note though, that children with FHL may also have the disease triggered by an infection.

Health Issues Immune Disorders PDA View Full Version : IgG subclass deficiency 09-22-2003, 03:37 PM Hi,
Im new to the board and I was wondering if anyone else has IgG4 deficiency? My 6 yo son has it and I havent met anyone else with it yet. So far, it seems to be his only deficiency. He gets pneumonia constantly from October thru June. He is on nebulizers 3x daily when healthy and every 3-4 hours when sick. He is on lots of meds but doesnt see an immunologist yet. Aybody have any input? 09-23-2003, 07:06 AM
I have a Primary Immune Defieciency. My IgA is deficient. They are checking my IgG subclasses now. It can be diagnosed when you are a child or adult. It brings with it many infections. Each subclass can cause different infections. I would suggest surfing the web under Primary Immune Deficiencies. There is information out there. Try to read up before his appointment. Good luck to you and your son! It is a frustrating thing to have!
Michele 09-23-2003, 05:01 PM Thanks for replying! Do you have IVIG treatments? They were talking about it for my son but they rechecking his levels again soon. They didnt want to start it unless they really had to or if his deficiency got worse. Let me know! Oh ya, from what the docs keep telling me they dont really know much about IgG4. To me that sounds weird. 09-24-2003, 08:44 AM

Primary Immune Deficiency Diseases (PIDD), an umbrella term referring to more than 130 genetic defects involving the immune system, affects as many as 500,000 Americans and 10 million people worldwide. People with PIDD are unable to fight off bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi and malignant cells, which can lead to frequent infections that are difficult to fight and to an increased incidence of cancer. The condition can go undetected because the symptoms appear as "ordinary" infections of the sinuses, ears, or lungs, or as gastrointestinal problems or inflammation of the joints. As a result, families and physicians are often unaware that the troubling conditions they see in the child are actually caused by an underlying defect of the immune system.
