ASHUK Factsheet covers smoking and cervical cancer, fertility, pregnancy, menopause, oral contraceptives, fetal growth and birth weight, spontaneous abortion, complications of pregnancy, perinatal mortality, secondhand smoke and pregnancy, children's health and long-term growth.
http://www.ash.org.uk/html/factsheets/html/fact07.html
factsheet no:7 Smoking, sex and Reproduction Action on Smoking and Health – May Introduction Cigarette smoking can affect women’s fertility; men’s fertility; sexual function in men; pregnant women's health; the health of an unborn child; and the health of young children. Most of the information below is sourced from the British Medical Association report: Smoking and Reproductive Life: http://www.bma.org.uk/ap.nsf/Content/SmokingReproductiveLife Fertility Women who smoke take longer to conceive. Among smokers, the chances of conceiving fall by 10 – 40 per cent per cycle. The greater the quantity of cigarettes smoked, the longer a woman is likely to take to achieve pregnancy. Even comparatively low levels of smoking can have a significant impact. An investigation involving almost 11,000 women in Denmark revealed that women who smoked between five and nine cigarettes a day were 1.8 times more likely than non-smokers to wait longer than 12 months to conceive. A British study found that both active and passive smoking was associated with delayed conception. Cigarette smoking can also affect male fertility: smoking reduces the quality of semen. Men who smoke have a lower sperm count than non-smokers, and their semen contains a higher proportion of malformed sperm. By-products of nicotine present in semen of smokers have been found to reduce the motility of sperm.

What type of virus is varicella zoster virus (VZV)?
Varicella zoster virus is a member of the herpesviridae family. The virus has icosahedral symmetry containing centrally located double-stranded DNA with surrounding envelope. The DNA contains 125,000 base pairs and encodes approximately 75 proteins. What are the reservoirs of VZV ?
Humans are the only reservoir for VZV. What are the common modes of transmission of VZV infection ?
The virus is extremely labile and is unable to survive for a long period in scabs or fomites. Therefore, transmission via inanimate objects is unlikely. The infection is usually transmitted through inhalation of infectious respiratory secretions from an infected person (droplet infection), direct physical contact with vesicular lesion and by vertical transmission during pregnancy.

COMPLICATIONS of PREGNANCY
Receiving safe, natural and appropriate prenatal care helps to minimize the risk of complications.
  • COMPLICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY
    • Bell's Palsy
    • Brachial Neuralgia
    • Breast Cancer ... Postpartum COMPLICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY Bell's Palsy This condition involves a sudden onset of painless loss of facial muscle function. Lowering the eyebrows, closing the eye or pursing the lips is not possible. Patients may also experience a loss of taste in the anterior 2/3rd's of the tongue as well as pain posterior to the ear. While this condition has currently no known cause, many believe that vertebral subluxations are at least partly responsible. Bell's palsy is 3 times more common in the pregnant women. Hormonal changes increasing water retention, grimacing during labor and delivery, as well as ligamentous laxity are primarily responsible. In the typical presentation, the woman awakes with a painless inability to operate the facial muscles on one side of the face. This typically occurs during the 3rd trimester. The condition tends to improve over the course of many weeks to months, depending on it's severity. Many studies have shown favorable results with chiropractic care. BACK TO MENU
Brachial Neuralgia A large collection of nerves, the brachial plexus, from the cervical spine descend into each arm to provide sensory and motor innervation. Again, due to increases in hormonal factors, parts of the nerve plexus may become impinged or irritated. This results in radiating arm pain and may also be associated with neck pain or stiffness. Restoring cervical biomechanics and eliminating cervical subluxations is performed by the chiropractor to eliminate cervical stress and radicular symptoms.

Pregnancy Complications
Group B Strep (GBS)
Group B Strep (GBS) is not a pregnancy complication or condition that is harmful to most people. However, during pregnancy it can cause complications and endanger the lives of newborn babies. Group B Strep (streptococcus) lives in the gastrointestinal tract of men and women under normal circumstances. At intermittent times it can move from the intestinal tract to the vagina of a woman during pregnancy, or at any time for that matter, and cause a newborn baby to become ill with a bacterial infection caused by Group B Step (GBS). An infant is at risk until approximately three months of age. A woman who is in labor and about to deliver is usually swabbed to see if the bacteria is present in the vagina at the time of delivery. If it is present, antibiotics will be given to the mother and the baby at birth. For a newborn complications include meningitis, sepsis, and pneumonia. Most survive and do well if treated and develop normally. A small percentage of babies with GBS will not survive. In a study in Britian, about 100 babies out of 700 who were diagnosed with Group B Strep did not survive.

Chickenpox (varicella) What you need to know:
Chickenpox (varicella) is a viral illness that mainly affects children. Its symptoms include an itchy rash and fever. Between 85 and 95 percent of pregnant women are immune to chickenpox, meaning that they cannot catch it. About 1 woman in 2,000 will develop chickenpox during pregnancy, however.
If a woman does catch chickenpox during pregnancy, there can be serious consequences to the baby, depending on when in pregnancy the infection occurs. If infection occurs in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, there is a very small risk (less than 1 percent) that the baby will be born with congenital varicella syndrome, a group of serious birth defects.
If infection occurs around the time of delivery, the baby may be born with chickenpox infection. If this infection is treated, most babies have only a mild illness. Without treatment, up to 30 percent of infants die.
What you can do: There is a blood test that can determine whether you are immune to chickenpox. If you are not sure if you have had the disease, you can get this blood test before pregnancy or early in pregnancy. Women who are not immune, and not yet pregnant, can get vaccinated. Experts recommend that a newly vaccinated woman wait at least one month before trying to get pregnant.

Previous Screen Complications Most pregnancies will progress safely, happily and without any major problems or emergencies, but for some there may be complications. To be on the safe side and for your own peace of mind, you should be aware of any potential complications and the corresponding danger signs so that you can seek medical care if necessary. If you experience any unusual symptoms, or if you have concerns about any of your pregnancy symptoms contact your doctor as soon as possible to arrange a check-up. Some of the more serious complications include: Ectopic Pregnancy
    Incompetent Cervix

    Miscarriage

    Placenta Praevia
    ...
    Further Information
Ectopic Pregnancy Incompetent Cervix In normal pregnancy, the cervix is sealed closed with a plug of mucus, which holds the foetus in the uterus. In an incompetent cervix, the cervix may begin to open before the term of the pregnancy (usually in the third of fourth month). This leads to rupture of the amniotic sac and miscarriage follows. This condition is rare, but may occur if the cervix has been damaged during previous pregnancies or surgery. This condition is not usually diagnosed until a first miscarriage has occurred. If a previous miscarriage is thought to have been caused by an incompetent cervix, preventative measures can be taken for your next pregnancy. Rest is recommended.

    MOST COMMON PREGNANCY COMPLICATIONS
There are several things that may cause a complication in your pregnancy. However, some are more common than others. Below is a list of common complications.
    Ectopic Pregnancy
    • Ectopic pregnancies can be caused by an STD, such as chlamydia, or an infection, such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Women who have undergone sterilization procedures or have been diagnosed with endometriosis or other female reproductive disorders are also at risk. Causes heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, dizziness and may result in death Emergency surgery or Methotrexate are used for treatment
    Rh Negative Disease:
    • Rhesus isoimmunization Rh factor is determined by the presence of a protein surrounding red blood cells. Without the protein, a woman is considered Rh negative. The mother is Rh negative, and her child is born Rh positive, and she starts to build antibodies up against the next Rh positive baby.

Rubella What you need to know:
Rubella (German measles) is a mild childhood illness that can cause serious birth defects in an unborn baby. About 25 percent of babies whose mothers get rubella in the first trimester of pregnancy are born with one or more birth defects (congenital rubella syndrome) including eye defects, hearing loss, heart defects, mental retardation and, less frequently, movement disorders.
With the widespread use of the rubella vaccine, major outbreaks of rubella no longer occur in the United States. Still, small outbreaks do occur. As many as 20 percent of childbearing women are susceptible to rubella infection.
    What you can do:
There is a simple blood test that can determine if you are immune to rubella. The March of Dimes recommends that all women be tested for immunity to rubella before becoming pregnant. If you are not immune, consider being vaccinated at least 28 days before trying to get pregnant. Pregnant women are routinely tested for rubella immunity at an early prenatal visit. If a pregnant woman finds out she is not immune, she should not be vaccinated during pregnancy. All she can do is try to avoid exposure to anyone with the illness. She can also get vaccinated soon after delivery so she is immune during any future pregnancies.
