Abused women at greater risk for pregnancy complications

Related entries: Lifestyle Media A recent study in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reports that women who have reported being abused have higher incidences of low birthweight and infant death. The results were gathered by surveying over 15,000 low-income women, most of whom lacked health insurance. The most marked incidences of pregnancy complications came from the group of women (94 total) who refused to finish the survey. Researchers speculate that these women may be the worst victims of abuse, and thus the most unwilling to talk. Domestic violence during pregnancy is a looming problem Read Permalink Email this ... Anti-Clotting Proteins Linked to Pregnancy Complications

  • Inherited thrombophilia has been linked to obstetric complications such as severe pre-eclampsia, abruptio placentae, fetal growth restriction, and stillbirth. On the basis of retrospective data in this study, patients with recurrent pregnancy complications may be good candidates one day for proteins S and Z screening. However, these tests are not currently available in clinical practice and there is no evidence that such screening would prevent these complications.
Review
NEW HAVEN, Conn.-Scientists may have unlocked a door into understanding why some women have recurrent miscarriages or other pregnancy complications. They discovered that some patients with adverse pregnancy outcomes carry deficient levels of the anti-clotting proteins Z and S. The investigators suggest these two proteins could have critical roles in these outcomes.

You Are Not Alone
Sidelines provides nationwide support for women and their families experiencing complicated pregnancies. A pregnancy is termed "high risk" or "complicated" when the life or health of the mother or baby may be at risk. It is estimated that approximately 1 out of every 4 women will experience pregnancy complications this year, sometimes leading to the birth of a premature baby. When babies are born preterm, they have a higher risk for serious health problems. We believe that families can cope more successfully with a high-risk pregnancy with appropriate medical intervention, education, and a strong support system. When you find yourself on the sidelines, we're here to help.

Pregnancy complications
The vast majority of pregnancies go to term without problems and a healthy baby is born at the end. Occasionally pregnant mothers develop some complications that need more intensive care or regular review by your GP, midwife or hospital obstetrician. This section describes some of these conditions so that you might recognise warning signs if they occur and seek early advice.
  • Pre-eclampsia Bleeding during early pregnancy Bleeding during later pregnancy Bile obstruction and jaundice ... Foetal movements
  • Pre-eclampsia
If untreated pre-eclampsia can develop into muscle irritability, twitching, epileptic fits and ultimately may result in a stroke. It is one of the major causes of maternal mortality and we take it very seriously. If we suspect you may be developing pre-eclampsia, you will be admitted to hospital. Pre-eclampsia settles after delivery and if you are in danger, your baby will be delivered early. Pre-eclampsia is the principal reason that blood pressure is monitored so closely in the ante-natal period. Arbitrarily, the cut off for normal blood pressure is set at 140/90 mmHg with high blood pressure defined as being above this. However, your doctor or midwife will be taking into consideration your normal level of blood pressure at previous visits. This might vary a little from visit to visit and a difference of 10-20 mmHg may not be important but a rise of 30/20 mmHg above your booking blood pressure is probably significant. We also check your urine for protein at each visit and that is why it is important to provide us with a fresh specimen at each attendance.
