High Risk Pregnancy and Pregnancy Complications Every expectant mother knows that pregnancy harbors both the highest of hopes and the deepest of fears. Of course, most pregnancies proceed normally and result in a healthy baby. But what if something goes wrong? The most important step in ensuring a safe and healthy pregnancy is identifying women at risk of complications and the best time to identify them is before they get pregnant. Factors such as lifestyle, family health history and the mother's overall health offer important information about potential risks. For instance, women over age 35 are considered at higher risk than younger women for pregnancy-related complications. Chronic health problems such as asthma diabetes heart problems lupus and Rh disease also require particular care during pregnancy.

Pregnancy Complaints
In this section we have included some of the problems or complications which you may encounter during your pregnancy. If you are concerned about anything you are experiencing, do not hesitate to call your doctor Abdominal Pain Back Ache Bloating Breast Tenderness ... Vision Changes
Abdominal Pain
There are many causes of abdominal pains. Some twinges and tightening feelings are to be expected, as the area expands to hold the growing baby. This should not be very painful. You may also feel mild discomfort if the baby kicks and moves around. However, if the pain is severe, does not go away, and is accompanied by bleeding, the cause may be miscarriage or premature labor. Contact your doctor as soon as possible. To relieve pains or cramps particularly, use a hot water bottle on the affected areas. You can also gently massage the areas with lavender oil. If you exercise regularly, you will strengthen and tone your abdominal muscles.

// 75, 634, , document.write(""); Low-lying placenta In the majority of pregnancies, the placenta forms in the top half of the womb. In some cases, however, it forms in the lower half, so that it lies partly or completely over the cervix, blocking the baby's way out of the womb. This is known as a low-lying placenta (or placenta praevia). The position of your placenta can be shown by an ultrasound scan . If you have a scan in the first half of your pregnancy that shows that your placenta is low-lying, this isn't usually any cause for concern. As many as one in four placentas may be low-lying in mid-pregnancy. The likelihood is that as your womb gets bigger, the placenta will move up (it doesn’t actually ‘move’ as such, but as the womb grows, the area to which the placenta is attached stretches upwards, away from the cervix). If your placenta is shown to be low-lying in mid-pregnancy, you’re likely to be offered another scan later on (usually around 32-34 weeks) to check that it has moved. Only 0.5 per cent -1 per cent of placentas remain low-lying at the end of pregnancy. However, when this happens, it can cause problems.

Oral Bacteria May Predict Pregnancy Outcomes
CHICAGO – March 23, 2005 – Researchers from New York University found that certain bacteria from the mouth may be related to preterm delivery and low birthweight according to a study in the Journal of Periodontology (JOP). Study Abstract * It’s been reported in the past that periodontal disease may be a factor in the occurrence of preterm low birthweight babies. Now it is believed that bacteria commonly found in dental plaque biofilms may also be related. Researchers evaluated bacterial levels in the saliva of 297 women in their third trimester of pregnancy. They found that a higher salivary level of the bacteria called

Pregnancy and Obesity
vs.
Pregnancy and Gastric Bypass:
Which is Worse?
There are well known risks to the patient and the baby after surgery for morbid obesity, but it is important to note that there is a large body of data that clearly show that pregnancy in the obese woman is a very high risk situation even in the absence of surgical procedures for obesity. Obesity is one of the most common nutritional problems complicating pregnancy in developed countries. Obesity before pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of several adverse outcomes of pregnancy. A recent study in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that higher maternal weight before pregnancy increased the risk of fetal death In a recent study by Wittgrove et al (Pregnancy Following Gastric Bypass for Morbid Obesity, Wittgrove et. al., Obesity Surgery, 8, 1998, 461-464) the number of pregnancies and rate of complications during those pregnancies in their post-bariatric surgical patients were evaluated. With over a 95% follow-up rate on the patients identified as having been pregnant following surgery, they found less risk of gestational diabetes, macrosomia, and cesarean section in patients after gastric bypass than in patients with obesity prior to gastric bypass. They concluded that since the patients had an operation that restricts their food intake, some basic precautions should be taken when they become pregnant. The post-surgical group had fewer pregnancy-related complications than did an internally controlled group that were morbidly obese during their previous pregnancies.

DES-Related Pregnancy Complications Lower conception rates overall are reported for DES daughters. See Infertility Of those who do conceive, spontaneous miscarriages, including tragic, mid-trimester losses, ectopic pregnancies, and preterm births are greatly increased. The risk is greatest for women with demonstrated structural abnormalities such as hypoplasia, a T-shaped uterus or cervical deformities. There is a five-fold increase in ectopic (tubal) pregnancies for DES daughters. This is a pregnancy that implants in the tube as opposed to the uterus. All DES daughters should be considered at risk for an ectopic pregnancy. Early confirmation of pregnancy and vigilance in treatment is essential, since an undiagnosed tubal pregnancy can rupture and be life-threatening. While as many as half of all DES daughters may have no problem getting pregnant and delivering healthy children, you should be aware of the risks associated with your exposure and see a doctor skilled in handling them. Preparation, good medical care and paying attention to your own body go a long way towards a successful pregnancy.
