Just do not get too complacent, Craig! Certainly any
non-MicroSoft system is far LESS likely to be compromised and
everyone using Mac and Linux have traditionally felt safe as
houses, but I am afraid nothing and no one is immune these days.
For example and quite by coincidence, today's newsletter from my
anti-virus people (Grisoft) reports a security hole which can
affect M$ and Linux systems. (See article ** below if you are
interested).
The older and more world-weary I get, the more I think of using a
computer in terms of a wolf dressed in sheep's clothing... Which
is a polite "family friendly" way of putting it! Anything and anyone can suddenly turn out to be a big baddie in disguise... The anti-virus guys are the woodsman who will save the day like the cavalry... Maybe. But that is the very best case scenario. It does not allow for Murphy sticking his oar in and messing up the story!

Pottery with a Difference
A Philippine-based NGO is helping indigenous people rebuild their lives by selling pottery glazed with ash of the volcano that destroyed their homeland
By Jennifer Gordon-Russell, MBE lbserv@attglobal.net
Founder-President Entrepreneur Volunteer Assistance Charity Foundation In June 1991, Mount Pinatubo, located 90 kilometers north of Manila, blew up in one of the fiercest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. The eruptions and the ash-and-mudslides that followed claimed more than 800 lives over the next three months. Some 100,000 homes were destroyed. In addition to those known to have been killed were an unknown number of deaths among the Aeta, the indigenous people who had lived peacefully on the volcano while it lay dormant for 600 years. The Aeta, who had lived off the forests and streams on the slopes of the mountain, lost both their homes and their sources of livelihood. The eruptions killed livestock and fish, and destroyed the forests and fresh water streams. With destructive rivers of lahar—ash and other volcanic residue mixed with mud—running down the mountainsides with every rainfall, the Aeta are unable to return to rebuild their homes. Most Aeta now live in crowded resettlement camps, where they face an uphill battle to live with dignity and preserve their traditions. An increasing number are choosing to create new settlements on upland slopes, which are now becoming green again. Most are illiterate and not used to a cash economy.

Potter's Syndrome is one of several serious or fatal kidney abnormalities.  In Potter's (or Potter) syndrome the baby's kidneys do not develop in the first few weeks of life in the womb.  The baby's kidneys are essential for the production of amniotic fluid in the womb.  If there are no kidneys, there is little or no amniotic fluid (this is known as oligohydramnios) to expand the womb around the baby and to allow the baby to grow and move.  The womb remains small and in its confined space the baby's lungs cannot develop properly.  Many babies with Potter's syndrome are stillborn.  In those who are born alive, the immediate cause of death is failure to breathe (respiratory failure) due to underdeveloped (hypoplastic) lungs, usually one or two days after delivery.  Even if this problem is treated the baby cannot survive without kidneys.  (Potter's syndrome is also known as Renal Agenesis, which simply means that the kidneys did not develop).     Potter's sequence is the name given to a condition which resembles Potter's syndrome in that although the baby has kidneys, there is little or no amniotic fluid (oligohydramnios).  This may sometimes be because the mothers waters have broken in mid-pregnancy, or due to developmental problems in the baby's kidneys or urinary system.  In Potter's sequence, as in Potter's syndrome, the baby's lungs are compressed and cannot develop properly.  The baby dies of respiratory failure within one or two days of delivery (subnote: although shorter and longer lifespans do exist).

WHAT IS THE KIDNEY FUNCTION IN THE BODY? All the body processes produce waste materials, which if allowed to accumulate could poison the body. Excretion is the process of cleaning this waste from the body, the skin excretes water and salt, the lungs excrete carbon- dioxide and water vapor, and the kidneys excretes urine. The kidneys are found at the back of the abdominal (or stomach) cavity in the region known as the small of the back. The normal adult kidney is about 7 cm wide and 12 cm long. A thin tube called the ureter connects the kidney with the bladder. Urine forms in the kidney and is passed down this tube into the bladder. The kidneys also receive blood from the heart which is full of oxygen in order to help the kidneys function and when this blood has been used it has to be passed back into the blood stream to be refilled with oxygen. The kidneys are composed of a vast network of tubes which are all vital to the proper function of each kidney. WHAT IS POTTERS SYNDROME?

yes no Potter syndrome was first described by Dr Edith Potter in 1946. It is an extremely rare condition involving a total absence (agenesis) or severe malformation (dysgenesis or dysplasia) of both infant kidneys. The normal function of the kidneys is to filter waste products from the blood, eliminating them as urine. Absence of one kidney (unilateral) is compatible with life whereas absence of both kidneys (bilateral) is incompatible with life. The first signs of Potter syndrome are evident in the womb before one month of development. At this stage, the ureteral bud, which forms the kidneys, fails to develop and as a result little womb amniotic fluid is produced. The production of amniotic fluid during pregnancy is vital to the development of the baby's lungs. In Potter syndrome, the lungs of the baby do not develop fully because of a lack of amniotic fluid (also known as oligohydramnios). During pregnancy, babies may appear to have normal weight and size for their age because the placenta performs the filtering work of the kidneys. However, babies die either during birth or very shortly thereafter mainly because of underdevelopment of the lungs (pulmonary hypoplasia). Another function of amniotic fluid is to 'cushion' the developing baby as it grows in the womb. If there is oligiohydramnios (reduced amounts of amniotic fluid), the baby may be compressed against the uterine wall. In addition, compression may cause growth retardation, a 'squashed' facial appearance and/or torso. Other features of Potter syndrome may include clubbing of the hands and feet and contractures (shortening of the muscle or of fibrous tissue).

Potter syndrome
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Potter syndrome and Potter phenotype is a complex of findings associated with kidney failure that develops before an infant is born and with a lack of amniotic fluid Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Potter phenotype describes a typical appearance that, in the newborn, is determined by the absence of amniotic fluid ( oligohydramnios ). In the absence of amniotic fluid, the infant is not cushioned from the walls of the uterus. The pressure of the uterine wall causes a typical facial appearance (Potters facies) that includes widely separated eyes with epicanthal folds broad nasal bridge low set ears and receding chin In addition, because of limited space in the uterus, the limbs may be abnormal or held in abnormal positions or

Potter's syndrome Synonyms: Bilateral renal agenesis syndrome (BRA) syndrome, bilateral kidney agenesis syndrome, dysplasia renofacialis, oligohydramnios sequence, oligohydramnios tetrad, renofacial dysplasia, renofacial syndrome. Associated persons: Edith Louise Potter Description: Potters Syndrome is the term used to describe the total absence or malformation of infant kidneys in combination with other congenital abnormalities, including Potter's facies, pulmonary hypoplasia, oligohydramnios, failure of foetal urinary production and skeletomuscular anomalies such as clubbing of the hands and feet and contractures. Oligohydramnios (deficiency of the amount of amniotic fluid) is the cause of failure of lung development and of limb compression in the foetus. Males are more commonly affected than females. The affected children are usually stillborn or die shortly after birth. Authors disagree whether inheritance is autosomal dominant recessive. Bibliography:

Includes poetry, pictures, and a personal story about Potter s syndrome.
    http://www.geocities.com/mooshmeow/gabriela.html
This web page is dedicated to my daughter "Gabriela Lael" who died shortly after birth on October 8, 1999 from a condition called "Potter's Syndrome", or Renal Agenesis as the more technical term. It basically means that Gabriela was conceived without kidneys and survived her nine months in my womb without any amniotic fluid. Potter's Syndrome is very rare and the chances of your baby being born with Potter's is 1/4000.
I will attempt to add some links to whatever I know about Potter's but there is not much out there. You can however e-mail me and I will be happy to share my experiences and what I know about Potter's Syndrome, as I spent the last four months of my pregnancy searching for any clues as to "what happened".
Despite knowing the outcome was terminal I decided to carry Gabriela full-term and let God's Will choose her final fate. I approached this part of my life with the love for my daughter and the support and love from my family and friends. I did not shy away from people who asked questions about my pregnancy, rather I faced them head-on and explained that my baby had Potter's and without a miracle her birth would be her death.
I found those with any faith in their hearts acknowledged and agreed in the continuation of my pregnancy with acceptance and belief that I was doing the right thing. Let me assure you that carrying full-term a terminally ill child is not easy, but if you have faith and love for your child you will welcome each day as a blessing. Each kick of my baby reminded me of her life and brought tears of sadness and joy to my eyes.
