Birth account - Lia Caitlin Minty - Born 23rd May 1998 - Midwife Kate Spillane - Mother Gill Ryan
Lia Caitlin came into our lives on 23rd May 1998. Now as her first birthday approaches, I thought I should finally get around to typing up her birth account. I discovered I was pregnant just after Ann Kelly was injuncted, and kept hearing that it was impossible to get a midwife unless you booked before six weeks. Panicked, I rang every one on the HBA's list - I wouldn't even contemplate the thought of a hospital birth. In the meantime I arranged ante-natal care with my GP, who unbeknownst to me until I declared my intentions and waited for the fallout, had his second child born at home. I ended up sharing my care with him all the way through. Thankfully, Kate Spillane eventually called us back and I will always be grateful to whatever power brought us together. The pregnancy was un-stressed and visits from Kate involved Donald as well. Apart from a few 'is it safe?' or 'you're very brave' comments, most people were supportive of our decision to have a home birth. My mother, who had had such a horrendous experience when I was born in hospital, was delighted I wouldn't have to go through what she had. Friends who'd had negative experiences in hospital were envious. Talking to other parents at home birth meetings helped us feel 'normal'.

65. IIDB - Why I Cannot Embrace Christianity

IIDB II Philosophical Forums PDA View Full Version : Why I cannot embrace Christianity Nightshade July 19, 2002, 12:52 AM I have an evangelical Christian friend who hopes that one day I will convert to his faith and be "saved." Occasionally we debate our views and I’m reluctant to tell him precisely why I can never embrace his beliefs. Most Christians would find my reasons to be extremely offensive, but I personally think they are convincing. I can sum it up why in a word: the Holocaust. So what does the Holocaust have to do with my rejection of Christianity? You’ll find out in a moment.
The Old Testament is filled with some interesting stories. One of them being a case of the Amalekites:
"Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass." (1 Samuel 15:3)
To be true to their faith, Evangelical Christian apologists must accept such atrocities as a form of divine justice, no matter how morally reprehensible. I am tempted to reply, "was that carried out with or without Zyklon B?" After all, what’s the difference between hacking a bunch of women and children to death with swords and axes compared to herding them into a gas chamber?
Perhaps an ancient Israelite, inspired by the Old Testament deity, would respond this way to the atrocity:

FitzPatrick Lab Bilateral Renal Agenesis Bilateral renal agenesis (BRA) or complete absence of the kidneys is a common lethal malformation occurring in 1 in 5000 births. It is twice as common in males as females. BRA appears to have a predominantly genetic aetiology and many cases represent the most severe manifestation of an autosomal dominant condition with incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. We are assembling a panel of DNA samples from 50 Scottish infants who died as a result of BRA. These samples will be used to screen for mutations in candidate genes that will be chosen using strict criteria. Identification of the underlying genetic defects in these families would considerably help genetic counselling.

Three fine lustre painted bowls from the 11th-century Egyptian Fatimid period I always liked the Luxor Museum for its opening hours: an after-dinner stroll through the cool hall is such an easy end to a hard day's sightseeing, so I was glad to find Cairo's Museum of Islamic Ceramics keeps late hours. The Egyptian collection of post-Pharaonic ceramics is housed in a charming small palace in Gezira Street, next door to the Marriott Hotel and opposite the Gezira Sporting Club. The palace was built by Prince Amr Ibrahim in 1923 and remained his family residence until the revolution. From 1952 to 1971 it was used as a club by the Arab Socialist Union, after which it held the fine arts collection of the Mr and Mrs Mohamed Mahmoud Khalil Museum until these returned to their original home in Giza. The Ceramics Museum opened in February 1999, bringing together exhibits from the Islamic Art Museum, treasures from this and other Cairo palaces, and newly- discovered pieces from the excavations at Fustat. With only a hazy memory of disappointment at the shortage of Fatimid lustre-ware when I last went to the Islamic Art Museum, I went along with an open mind. But my heart lifted once I stepped foot in the entrance hall. Amr Ibrahim had ensured his was a home fit for a prince, and I'm sure his heart, wherever it now is, has been lifted too. The building has undergone some cleaning and restoration, so it can truthfully be described as a gem rather than a mere example of shabby-chic style, as it was when I last saw it

Hot Harry Potters Don't Make JK Happy; Neither Does Killing a Main Character
As Gothamist suspected, Scholastic is suing The Daily News for printing two pages of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix from a copy that was "accidentally" sold early. The best part is that Scholastic is suing for $100 million dollars . (Gothamist is saying " ONE hun-dred million dollars " like Dr. Evil and giggling.) "Jeopardizing" their marketing campaign. Heh. The movie studios wish they could sue for bad pre-release buzz of movies, but they can't. Gothamist salutes Scholastic for continuing the litigous tradition of our country. As J.K. Rowling told the BBC earlier , she was upset having killed off one of the main characters, but, she added, if "you are writing children's books, you need to be a ruthless killer." Um, okay. Anyway, Gothamist has been wondering who is killed off. Jake is worried it's Hermione. Jen suggested it could be a main but-not-Harry-Hermione-Ron-type main character: perhaps Hagrid, Dumbledore, a Weasley. MSNBC gives some odds about who might die. Katie Couric has the only U.S. interview with J.K. Rowling on the

Articles Chromium and Compounds Edouard Bastarache discusses the dangers of chrome in ceramics. Chromium and Compounds Introduction: It is a grey-white metal very resistant to wear. Chromium is produced from chromite, FeO.Cr2O3, by roasting and extraction in the form of chromate which is then reduced to chromium metal. Green chromium oxide, iron chromite, potassium dichromate and stains are  compounds used by potters. Chemical and Physical Forms: Chromium has a molecular weight of 52. Most chromium compounds are solids at room temperature, altough one notable exception is chromyl chloride, a hexavalent chromium compound that is a fuming liquid. The chemical and toxicologic properties of chromium differ markedly, depending on the valence state of the metal. Chromium  occurs in its metallic state (valence 0), and in valence states 2+ through 6+, but only the trivalent (3+) and hexavalent (6+) are commonly found. Chromium in its 2+ state frequently oxidizes rapidly to 3+ form, and the 4+  and 5+ states are found only as intermediates in the conversion between 3+ and 6+ states.

Throwing Demos on the Web
In the previous three issues, I have taken you on virtual trips to see pottery and ceramics, to colleges and universities with a strong ceramics curriculum, and to visit active pottery guilds with a good presence on the World Wide Web. I hope it has been as much fun for you to come along as it has been for me as I "surfed" the 'Net to find these special sites. Now, I hope to pique your interest in the great variety of throwing techniques, standard and otherwise, that can be found worldwide, many of which are represented on the Web, especially in the sites of individual potters or small studio potteries. In some cases there is not only interest, but a lot to learn from the material presented on these sites. In the best of them, there may be inspiration as well! Bruning Pottery (Seattle)
http://bruningpottery.com

Potter Larry Bruning has built a substantial Web site to market the porcelain and stoneware he produces with his son Ky and staff Brad Ruekgauer and Mark Cowan. They make high-fired (cone 11) porcelain and stoneware in a wide range of production forms, utilizing many different glazes and a number of one-of-a-kind pieces. Along with their production facility, the Brunings run a teaching studio, offering classes from beginning to quite advanced levels. In their Web pages, they have pictures of Ky Bruning throwing a large vase, and the shots are taken from above on an oblique angle that allows a good view of Ky's hand positions and technique. Follow the "Classes" link and scroll down to click on any of the "thumbnail" photos to zoom to larger images, which load fairly quickly.

The 'Pink Book' syndrome!
R.C. Acharya (This article appeared in the Business Standard The recent accident of Rajdhani express in Bihar, though reportedly as a result of an act of sabotage has once again placed a question mark on adequacy of safety inputs being organized by Railways. Of course the question of who is responsible will be eventually decided by the Commissioner of Railway Safety but translating ideas into action is perhaps the most crucial part of any administrative or management process. On paper though Railways does it admirably well, in fact too well. How? It does so with a couple of thick volumes called the 'Pink Book', (since the cover page is invariably of Pink colour) that are placed on the floor of the house along with the Railway Budget. The yearly plan for Railway's growth is spelt out in great financial detail and given its importance, replacement of the permanent way viz. track and repairs to bridges etc. forms an first of many chapters. Once the Rail Budget is passed, the 'Pink Book' becomes the bible authorizing expenditure on various heads of accounts. If it is not in the 'Pink Book' it does not get done or made, - and conversely if it is there no one can take it out either since this is a document which has the approval of both the Lok and Rajya Sabha. Understandably it also has token amounts allotted against thousands of projects which on account of severe financial constraints the Railways has no means of completing in the next decade or so!
