by Jana Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 As I sit here and read all these heart breaking stories feeling terrible for all these people, I felt is was about time for me to open up and share my story with you. We were so excited. When the day came me, my husband, and my dad made the drive to the hospital. At that time I was given my last ultrasound to see the position of the baby. She was still breach. Also at that time I was told that her lungs looked a little under developed; that at worst she would have to stay in the hospital for an extra 2-3 weeks. But once again, "not to worry." We went into delivery all excited. All I can remember was seeing all the doctors and nurses faces. For awhile I didn't hear her cry. It seems like forever but she did. I asked if everything was ok. They said yes. She had a hard time breathing but everything would be fine. They wouldn't let me see her. She needed to be cleaned and put on oxygen. We started to get very upset but we did remember what the doctor did say about her lungs. I was put in recovery when a doctor came in to tell me that the baby's heart was in distress. HER HEART!

Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 Me and my husband were married on July 25th 1997. Both of us wanted a child more than anything, or so I thought. In Oct. of that year I found out I was pregnant. My due date was June 29th 1998. In the beginning of the pregnancy everything was going so good. At about 16 weeks my doctor did a MFSP test. It came back that the baby had Downs Syndrome. We were told that we should consider an abortion. I could not and would not do that. We went to see a maternal fetal specialist. They did an Ultrasound and we then told our baby had potters syndrome. Her kidneys didn't develop, neither did her lungs. We were then told we should go a head and have the abortion. I still couldn't. My husband wanted me to. He was only concerned about when I could conceive again. I chose to continue my pregnancy. I needed to hold and see my baby. When I was 28 weeks pregnant, on April 11 1998, I went into labor. I was at home. I was in labor the whole night, but didn't think it was labor because I still had 12 weeks to go. Well to make a long story short I did get to hold her and see her, although she was stillborn. She was a beautiful little red haired girl. She was 14 in. and weighed 1lb 10oz.

Re: Potter's Syndrome
Posted by Walt Stoll on June 02, 1998 at 12:18:01: Dear Georgina, Like many chronic problems, the best solution is prevention. That is a little late once the damage is done. HOWEVER, those who have had a child with this condition are a little more likely to learn how to never have something like that happen again. If everyone would read Paavo Airola, ND's classic "Every Woman's Book" (at least 2 years before conception) there would be less than 1% of the birth defects we see today. There would be much less hyperactivity, learning deficiencies and aggressive children as well. He died about 10 years ago but his family continues to keep this essential knowledge in print. There has been a lot learned in the past 10 years that, once the reader is sensitized to the process, would stick out like sore thumbs in the recent literature. Let us know what you learn. Walt

I am 31 weeks pregnant and have had many u/s's due to the fact that I am carrying fraternal twins, and that twin 2 was diagnosed with potters syndrome at 22 weeks (non genetic disease)
All of the u/s's so far have seen Twin 1 as 'normal' 'wonderful' 'big and healthy' etc, and seeings that we've had a few u/s, dh and I thought that if anything was wrong, they would have surely seen it by now, considering the appointments and u/s have all been by the senior sonographers and high risk doctors etc, due to the potters syndrome.
Anyway, at my 30 week u/s, the sonographer gave as certain a diagnosis as an u/s can give, that twin 1 -the baby who is 'healthy'- has club feet. At the 22 week u/s, the feet were not clubbed, (we were given photos of its feet side by side and hand waving) and no mention of it at the 25 week u/s either. She then asked if I had had an amnio, which I didn't, as I was only 29 at the time of the IVF transfer, and was told it wasn't necessary, so I had the nuchal fold which saw thin necks etc, and a low risk.
