It has been suggested that this article or section be merged with Post-polio syndrome Discuss Post-polio syndrome is a condition that frequently affects survivors of poliomyelitis , a viral infection of the nervous system . Typically the symptoms appear 20-40 years after the original infection, at an age of 35 to 60. Symptoms include new or increased muscular weakness pain in the muscles , and fatigue Post-polio patients are also often noted to have memory problems, various cognitive difficulties, and an increased sensitivity to anesthetics . Weight gain is also a frequently noted symptom, though it's hard to tell if this is due to the disorder directly or due to the decreased level of physical activity that usually accompanies the disorder. Fatigue is often the most disabling symptom, as often even slight exertion can produce disabling fatigue and also increase other symptoms. Diagnosis of post-polio syndrome can be difficult, since the symptoms are hard to separate from the original symptoms of polio and from the normal infirmities of

POST POLIO SYNDROME
Polio was the killer disease that struck fear into a whole generation in the 1950s. Now it's back in the form of Post-Polio Syndrome.
For many of us polio is a distant memory and some people even think 'it doesn't exist anymore'. In the 1950's there were 45,000 cases in the UK and hundreds died. The polio vaccine introduced in the 1960s proved highly effective in virtually eliminating the disease in the UK. But now the battle with polio is being fought all over again.
Post-Polio syndrome
For some former polio sufferers, they're reliving their worst nightmare again with the onset of Post-Polio syndrome. Post-Polio Syndrome (PPS) describes a range of new symptoms that occur 20 - 40 years after the original onset of the polio infection.

Post-polio Syndrome
Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors 10 to 40 years after their initial polio infection. Symptoms include progressive muscle weakening, fatigue, joint pain, muscle atrophy, and scoliosis. While many cases of post-polio symptoms are not serious, some people may develop serious symptoms that have a debiliating effect and reduce quality of life.

Source: Sandra McPherson, PhD, Montreal Neurological Institute, tel. 514-398-1902. Polio – gone but not forgotten Polio survivors faced with new health problems. Montreal, March 10, 2005. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Salk vaccine which brought an end to the North American poliomyelitis (polio) epidemic. For many, polio has become a forgotten disease, but now for the survivors in Canada, polio is once again bringing challenges to their lives as they face post- polio syndrome. March is Polio Awareness Month and together with partners across the country, a campaign is underway to educate the public and the medical community about post-polio syndrome. Between 1927 and 1962, there were 50,000 reported cases of polio in Canada. In Quebec alone, the number polio survivors could be as high as 7,000. It is estimated that up to 60% of polio (paralytic) survivors may be confronted with post polio syndrome 30 to 40 years later. Post-polio syndrome describes the multitude of new symptoms - weakness, fatigue, and pain in people who have recovered from paralytic polio. These key symptoms cannot be explained by other medical conditions. Why these new symptoms appear is currently unclear but research indicates that it might be due to a “giving out” of the remaining overextended post-polio nerve cells.

Have you ever simply wanted to lay in the sun and veg all day?
Perhaps it's too difficult to reach the backyard, or the front yard. We all need time to "play," to let the child within come forth and when the sun is warm and calling our name, if we can't get to the door or through the door, some of that desire to play, some of that child within, is going to give up, and we would then find ourselves a prisoner in our own home. Some of us are bedridden, and for those who are, these pages will help to bring the sunshine to you, with lots of jokes and laughter, stories of our adventures and the crazy antics of the animals that are willing to let us share the house with them. Also some ideas of how to make doorways/step-downs, more accessible for those in wheelchairs or scooters.
The late effects of Polio, called Post-Polio, or PPS, will be covered as well as, CFS, and the effects of anesthesia on Polio survivors. Links to other PPS sites, Crohns and Scoliosis sites, heart attack information, with an article on knowing what to do to survive a heart attack if you are alone; baby-boomers and possible links to their having CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome); magnets that work; memory loss in Polio survivors and more are in these pages.

Living With Post-Polio Syndrome
Decades after surviving polio, many individuals are faced with the pain, fatigue and muscle weakness of post-polio syndrome (PPS). PPS is believed to affect 20-40% of the 640,000 polio survivors in the United States, according to the Post-Polio Task Force . People who had more severe cases of polio generally have more severe cases of PPS, as well. There is no cure for PPS, but it is seldom a life-threatening condition. PPS typically affects polio survivors 10 to 40 years after an initial polio attack. In the course of recovery from polio, the body compensates for the loss of nerve cells by sprouting extra nerve endings to restore function to muscles. It is believed that these "axonal sprouts" eventually fail after years of use, resulting in loss of muscle strength, pain and fatigue. In essence, the muscle fiber loses its ability to contract in an efficient manner. This may eventually lead to joint pain and skeletal deformities. But PPS is a "very slowly progressing condition marked by long periods of stability," according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke For example, patients may realize that in years past they could walk long distances, but are now fatigued by walking in the grocery story. Or they have pain or weakness in an area of the body they thought was unaffected by polio. However, not every polio survivor who has aches and pains or experiences fatigue has post-polio syndrome.

Post-polio syndrome (PPS) is a condition that affects polio survivors anywhere from to 40 years after recovery from an initial paralytic attack of the poliomyelitis virus. PPS is characterized by a further weakening of muscles that were previously affected by the polio infection. Symptoms include fatigue, slowly progressive muscle weakness and, at times, muscular atrophy. Joint pain and increasing skeletal deformities such as scoliosis are common. Some patients experience only minor symptoms, while others develop spinal muscular atrophy, and very rarely, what appears to be, but is not, a form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease. PPS is rarely life-threatening.
