The association of porencephalic cysts with hydrocephalus was first cited in 1939. Subsequent descriptions of this combination in terms of fixed, nonprogressive neurological problems have been reported. We describe four patients with hydrocephalus who had progressive focal motor deficits secondary to porencephalic diverticulation of the lateral ventricle. Symptoms of increased intracranial pressure were not a consistent finding in all patients. Enlargement of the porencephalic cyst is related to either

PURPOSE: We determined the frequency of amygdalar-hippocampal atrophy in patients with congenital porencephaly-related seizure disorders to ascertain whether specific MR features of the porencephaly correlate with amygdalar-hippocampal atrophy and epilepsy. METHODS: We studied brain MR images of 22 patients with congenital porencephaly and measured the volume of the amygdala, the hippocampal formation, and the porencephalic cyst. We

This symptom information has been gathered from various sources, may not be fully accurate, and may not be the full list of symptoms of Porencephaly. Furthermore, symptoms of Porencephaly may vary on an individual basis for each patient. Only your doctor can provide adequate diagnosis of symptoms and whether they are indeed symptoms of Porencephaly. List of symptoms of Porencephaly: The list of symptoms mentioned in various sources for Porencephaly includes: Symptoms of Porencephaly: Signs may include delayed growth and development, spastic paresis (slight or incomplete paralysis), hypotonia (low muscle tone), seizures (often infantile spasms), and macrocephaly (large head) or microcephaly (small head). Individuals with porencephaly may have poor or absent speech development, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, spastic contractures (shrinkage or shortening of a muscle), and mental retardation.

Article title: NINDS Porencephaly Information Page: NINDS Main condition: Porencephaly Conditions: Porencephaly What is Porencephaly? Porencephaly is an extremely rare disorder of the central nervous system involving cysts or cavities in a cerebral hemisphere. The cysts or cavities are usually the remnants of destructive lesions, but are sometimes the result of abnormal development. The disorder can occur before or after birth. Most infants show symptoms of the disorder shortly after birth. Diagnosis is usually made before age 1. Signs may include delayed growth and development, spastic paresis (slight or incomplete paralysis), hypotonia (low muscle tone), seizures (often infantile spasms), and macrocephaly (large head) or microcephaly (small head). Individuals with porencephaly may have poor or absent speech development, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, spastic contractures (shrinkage or shortening of a muscle), and mental retardation.

Porencephaly secondary to fetal trauma during amniocentesis
KM Eller and JA Kuller BACKGROUND: There has been one reported case of porencephaly diagnosed postnatally as a result of amniocentesis. We report the first antenatal diagnosis of porencephaly, which apparently resulted from penetration of the fetal skull during amniocentesis. CASE: A 37-year-old woman had genetic amniocentesis at 16 weeks' gestation. The fetal skull was penetrated during the unguided procedure. Porencephaly discovered at 28 weeks' gestation was confirmed by imaging studies in the neonatal period. CONCLUSION: Inadvertent fetal skull penetration appeared to result from amniocentesis unguided by continuous ultrasound.
