Polymyositis
Dermatomyositis and polymyositis are autoimmune disorders in which the skeletal muscle is damaged by an inflammatory process dominated by lymphocytic infiltration. The term polymyositis is applied when the condition spares the skin, and the term dermatomyositis when polymyositis is associated with a characteristic skin rash. One-third of cases are associated with various connective tissue disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and polymiositis. The precise cause of these diseases is unknown, but interplay between host genetic factors, viral infection of muscle, and autoimmune mechanisms is probably contributory. Familial occurrence of these diseases, and the increased frequency of HLA-DR3 and -DRw52 antigens in patients. A lymphocyte-mediated disease resembling polymyositis has been reported in laboratory animals injected with muscle antigens together with Freund's adjuvant (experimental). A widely used classification of the dermatomyositis-polymyositis group. Other diseases uncommonly associated with polymyositis are sarcoidosis, giant cell myositis with thymoma, and myositis in systemic infections due to viruses, toxoplasma, or parasites. Current estimates of the annual incidence of the inflammatory myopathies are approximately five cases per million population. These estimates are probably low.

    What is Polymyositis?
Polymyositis is an inflammatory muscle disease that causes varying degrees of decreased muscle power. The disease has a gradual onset and generally begins in the second decade of life. Polymyositis rarely affects persons under the age of 18. What Causes Polymyositis? The exact cause of polymyositis is unknown. However, polymyositis may be associated with other collagen, vascular, autoimmune, or infectious disorders. Symptoms of Polymyositis? The most common symptom of polymyositis is muscle weakness. Usually, the muscles affected are those that are closest to the trunk of the body. As polymyositis worsens, the muscles that are not close to the trunk of the body will also weaken, and patients will have difficulty rising from a sitting position, climbing stairs, lifting objects, or reaching overhead. Trouble with swallowing may occur and the muscles may ache and be tender to touch. Can Polymyositis be Treated?

    Signs, symptoms and indicators
Treatment recommendations Polymyositis is an inflammatory disease of muscle, its cause unknown. It begins when white blood cells - the immune cells of inflammation - spontaneously invade muscles. The muscles affected are mostly those closest to the trunk or torso. This in turn results in weakness which can be severe. It is a chronic illness with periods of increased symptoms, called flares or relapses, and decreased symptoms, known as remissions. Polymyositis is slightly more common in females. It affects all age groups, although its onset is most common in middle childhood and in the twenties. Polymyositis occurs throughout the world and, when associated with skin rash, is then referred to as " dermatomyositis ." It can also affect other areas of the body and is, therefore, a systemic illness.
Occasionally it is associated with cancer , or with other diseases of the connective tissues (for example, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma or rheumatoid arthritis
To date, no cause of polymyositis has been isolated by medical researchers. There are indicators of heredity (genetic) susceptibility that can be found in some patients. There is also indirect evidence of infection by a

    POLYMYOSITIS
    GENERAL INFORMATION: What is it?
    • Polymyositis (poh-lee-mi-o-si-tiss) is one of a group of inflammatory (in-flah-muh-tor-e) muscle diseases. Polymyositis is an inflammation (redness, pain and swelling) of many muscles in your body. It is also an autoimmune (aw-toe-i-mune) disease. An autoimmune disease is when your body gets confused and thinks that something normal inside of you is bad. Your immune system responds by attacking it. The immune system is what protects your body from dangerous things like infection or disease. An autoimmune disease is like being allergic to yourself. With polymyositis, your immune system thinks muscle tissues are bad and attacks them. This causes muscle weakness and loss. Polymyositis usually occurs between 40 and 60 years of age. It happens in women twice as often as men. You may have mild polymyositis for a while before you even know it.
