You are about to enter the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Zone… Beware, the subject matter found within this web page is designed to enlighten and encourage women with this dreaded condition. If you enjoy being miserable and feeling like you’re the only person in the universe who must endure PCOS, then you have come to the wrong place! Hello and Welcome to my web site! My name is Dawn and I am a 34 year-old woman who lives with a condition called PCOS.
My original intent for publishing this web site was to help educate and comfort the average PCOS-inflicted woman who happened to find her way into my domain. In retrospect, it was a rather cathartic endeavor that greatly helped to lift my own spirits as well. Please feel free to explore my little chunkof the universe and e-mail me with any comments you might have. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), and Stein-Leventhal Syndrome are all names for the same condition, which I will simply refer to as PCOS throughout my site. PCOS is an endocrine condition that afflicts roughly 6-10% of all pre-menopausal women.

You Are Not Alone! Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex endocrine disturbance found in 5 - 30% of the world's female population. First diagnosed in 1935 as Stein - Levinthal Syndrome, it is one of the most common causes of
infertility, and yet it still is misdiagnosed in most cases.
The symptoms of PCOS vary within each individual, but common complaints include: irregular menstrual periods, male pattern baldness, obesity or unexplained weight gain, excessive facial and/or body hair, insulin resistance and infertility. Women who have PCOS have an increased risk of adult onset diabetes, hypertension, early onset heart disease, cancers of the reproductive organs, and a higher chance of miscarriage and infertility. Though there is currently no cure for this disorder, it can be controlled to an extent with certain medications and a proper diet.

Definition Return to top Polycystic ovary disease is characterized by enlarged ovaries with multiple small cysts, an abnormally high number of follicles at various states of maturation, and a thick, scarred capsule surrounding each ovary. The syndrome was originally reported by Stein and Leventhal in 1935 when they described a group of women with amenorrhea (absence of menses), infertility hirsutism (unwanted hair growth in women), and enlarged polycystic ovaries. Today, it is known that those with polycystic ovaries may have some, but not necessarily all, of the "classic" symptoms included in Stein-Leventhal syndrome.

Hello, my name is Nancy Dunne, N.D. I’m a licensed primary care physician in the state of Montana. My specialty is the use of natural medicine to improve the health of my patients. Over the past few years, PCOS and ovarian cysts have become especially relevant to me. My 22-year-old daughter's menstrual difficulties and persistent acne have been diagnosed as aspects of polycystic ovary syndrome. This disturbing discovery galvanized me to do research in order to create a safe, effective treatment plan for her. The success we’ve had with her treatment has been so exciting, and my research has so fascinated me, that I’m now reaching out to other women. I want to share my experiences treating PCOS and its accompanying difficulties by using natural therapies. Most chronic health problems, including polycystic ovary syndrome and ovarian cysts, result from complex combinations of inherited genetic susceptibility and controllable environmental factors including biochemical, nutritional, behavioral and psychological factors.

    Background
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common cause of anovulation and infertility in women. Women with this syndrome do not ovulate regularly and have ovaries that contain multiple small cystic structures, usually about 2-9 mm in diameter. This gives the ovaries a characteristic "polycystic" (many cysts) appearance on ultrasound - see images below. Polycystic ovarian syndrome causes irregularities in the menstrual cycle, and sometimes a total lack of periods - amenorrhea Image of an enlarged polycystic ovary as seen at laparoscopy A typical, enlarged, polycystic ovary

What is polycystic ovarian syndrome? Women develop polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) when they have too many male hormones and not enough female hormones, making ovulation rare or irregular. Normally a woman ovulates when an egg-containing follicle grows and releases a mature egg. Polycystic ovarian syndrome keeps those follicles from growing, causing them to build up in the ovaries and form small benign estrogen-releasing cysts. The combination of the estrogen and the male hormones throws the production of two other hormones, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which also helps inhibit ovulation, off balance. Without ovulation, male hormone levels remain high, and the cycle repeats itself. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, also called Stein-Leventhal syndrome, affects an estimated five to ten percent of women of childbearing age.
