There are five main causes of pneumonia: Bacteria Viruses Mycoplasmas Other infectious agents, such as fungi –including pneumoscystis Various Chemicals http://www.umm.edu University of Maryland Medical Center Causes of Pneumonia Pneumonia is caused by an infection or injury to the lower respiratory tract resulting in inflammation. Infectious agents or injury caused by aspiration of dust or chemical agents causes fluid to enter the alveolar spaces. The symptoms of pneumonia include chills, fever, cough, chest pain, labored breathing, fatigue, anorexia, headache, leucocytosis, and bloody sputum. Pneumonia can also result from the aspiration of gastric contents, water, or other irritants. Infectious pneumonia is common in the US with about 2-3 million cases being diagnosed each year resulting in 40,000 to 70,000 deaths. Mortality is estimated at 14% for patients requiring hospitalization. Risk factors include upper respiratory infection, alcoholism, cigarette smoking, institutionalization, malnutrition, immunocompromise, and illnesses such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, congestive heart disease and cerebro vascular disorder. Pulmonary defense mechanisms such as the cough reflex, mucocilliary action, and immune responses, normally prevent infections but pneumonia results when the pathogen gets past these mechanisms. Virulence and severity of the pneumonia depends on the health of the individual, the particular microorganism, and the size of the inoculation.

Statins protect from death from pneumonia
Patients hospitalised because of pneumonia are at less risk of dying from the disease if they have been taking the widely used cholesterol-lowering drugs 'statins' before hospital admission. These results, published today in the Open Access journal Respiratory Research, suggest another beneficial use of statins, which are prescribed to an increasing number of patients to prevent and treat high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and vascular disease. Pneumonia is the seventh most common cause of death and the leading cause of death from infection in the USA, where it kills up to 40,000 people every year – those most at risk are very young children, elderly people and patients with underlying health problems such as AIDS or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (CPOD). The disease is caused by viruses or bacteria, which are becoming resistant to the antibiotics used to treat bacterial pneumonia. Eric Mortensen and colleagues, from the University of Texas Health Centre at San Antonio measured the risk of dying from pneumonia in patients admitted with pneumonia who were taking statins prior to their entry into hospital. They compared it with the risk of dying from the disease in pneumonia patients who were not taking statins. The authors used the Pneumonia Severity Index to rate the risk of dying within 30 days of admission to hospital in the two groups of patients. The results of their statistical analysis show that patients who were on a statin when they entered hospital were 2.8 times less likely to die than patients who were not on statins.

Bacterial Pneumonia
Bacterial Pneumonia Overview
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. People with pneumonia usually complain about coughing, fever, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
  • Your body's immune system usually keeps bacteria from infecting your lungs. In pneumonia, bacteria reproduce in your lungs, while your body tries to fight off the infection. This response to bacterial invaders is called inflammation.
When the inflammation occurs in the alveoli (microscopic air sacs in the lungs), they fill with fluid. Your lungs become less elastic and cannot take oxygen into the blood, or remove carbon dioxide from the blood, as efficiently as usual. When the alveoli don't work efficiently, your lungs have to work harder to satisfy your body's need for oxygen. This causes the feeling of being short of breath, which is one of the most common symptoms of pneumonia. Inflammation causes many of the other symptoms, including fever and chest pain. Pneumonia can be very serious, because it directly interferes with your body's ability to exchange carbon dioxide and oxygen.

Hustler's Flynt hospitalized with pneumonia
Flynt
In this story:
LOS ANGELES (CNN) Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt, whose paying for information about the private lives of politicians sparked national controversy, was hospitalized with pneumonia after winning a conditional delay in a pornography trial because of planned surgery. Flynt was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday after X-rays showed the pneumonia, said one of his lawyers, Alan Isaacman. A spokesman for the hospital said he had been instructed not to release any information about Flynt. But a spokesman for the publisher said on Thursday he was "doing fine. His prognosis is excellent." "He came down with some bronchial problems that they thought was the flu, and had an X-ray and it turned out it was pneumonia in both lungs," Isaacman said. "I think they're just treating him with antibiotics."

    Viral Pneumonia
    Viral Pneumonia Overview
Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation of the lungs. It can be in just one part of the lungs, or it can involve many parts. Pneumonia is caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms. The severity of pneumonia depends on which organism is causing the infection. Viral pneumonias are usually not very serious, but they can be life-threatening in very old and very young patients, and in people whose immune systems are weak. Even severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which is believed to have a viral cause, has caused very few deaths (approximately 3-4% of all cases) as of March 19, 2003.
