Yes No VIEW RESULTS FALLS CHURCH, Virginia (CNN) The U.S. Army said Monday it has activated two medical teams to help investigators determine what has caused about 100 cases of pneumonia two of them fatal among service members in the Persian Gulf since March 1. A team of two doctors, an epidemiologist and an infectious disease specialist is at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where most of the patients have been treated, said Lyn Kukral, a spokeswoman for the Army surgeon general. The second team has been sent to Iraq, where most of the cases occurred, Kukral said. The team will sample soil, water and air. Cases also occurred in Uzbekistan, Kuwait and Qatar, she said.

Cigarettes, the CDC researchers say, increase the risk of this infection by four times for smokers and more than double the risk to nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke. The study is reported in this week's issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Pneumococcal infections are caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. They are the leading cause of pneumonia in the U.S. "The more the person smokes, the greater the risk, both in terms of cigarettes per day and years smoking," says researcher Anne Schuchat, MD, chief of the CDC's Respiratory Disease Branch. The risk remains high for 10 years after a person quits, then drops to the risk of nonsmokers, she says. This is good news because it means "this is not a permanent effect of smoking," she says. The CDC estimates that if "the number of people who smoke [were reduced] by just 10%, we could prevent about 4,000 cases of invasive pneumococcal infections pneumonia, bacteremia [infection in the blood], or meningitis each year," Schuchat says.

Pneumonia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung . The term is almost always used to refer specifically to infections of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other parasites; however, it can also refer to lung injury caused by physical or chemical irritants, in which case the term pneumonitis is used to differentiate the condition from infectious pneumonia. This article uses pneumonia only in the first sense, that of infection. Pneumonia may occur in patients of all age groups, although young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised and immune-deficient patients are especially at risk. Antimicrobial drugs are often used to treat pneumonia.

Ex-mayor Ed Koch in N.Y. hospital with pneumonia
Former Mayor Ed Koch NEW YORK (CNN) Former Mayor Ed Koch has been hospitalized with pneumonia, but issued a statement saying his condition is not life-threatening. The outspoken 76-year-old Democrat, who served three terms in the nonpartisan office from 1978 to 1989, was recovering at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and expects to be released by Friday. "I am alive and well," Koch said in a statement released by his office. "There is no danger to my situation and I am not infectious. I expect to be back at the office by Monday and resume a full work schedule." Koch suffered from shortness of breath and a fever while he was visiting friends in Washington, Connecticut, during the weekend, his aide Mary Garrigan told CNN in a phone interview. He was taken to a Connecticut hospital and then transferred to Columbia Presbyterian in New York City.

Pneumonia
Medical Reviewing Author: George Schiffman, M.D.
Medical Reviewing Editor: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD What is pneumonia? Pneumonia is an infection of one or both lungs which is usually caused by bacteria viruses , or fungi . Prior to the discovery of antibiotics, one third of all people who developed pneumonia subsequently died from the infection. Currently, over 3 million people develop pneumonia each year in the United States. Over a half a million of these people are admitted to a hospital for treatment. Although most of these people recover, approximately five per cent will die from pneumonia. Pneumonia is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. How do people "catch pneumonia?" Some cases of pneumonia are contracted by breathing in small droplets that contain the organisms that can cause pneumonia. These droplets get into the air when a person infected with these germs coughs or sneezes. In other cases, pneumonia is caused when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, throat, or nose inadvertently enter the lung. During sleep it is quite common for people to aspirate secretions from the mouth, throat, or nose. Normally, the body's reflex response (coughing back up the secretions) and

Yeltsin hospitalized; pneumonia suspected
November 29, 1999
Web posted at: 12:08 p.m. EST (1708 GMT) MOSCOW Russian President Boris Yeltsin was taken to the hospital Monday with suspected pneumonia, just days after falling ill with what doctors described as bronchitis, the Kremlin said. The president, 68, was taken to the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow for examination and treatment. Doctors had examined him earlier Monday at his country home and decided to hospitalize him. Yeltsin had been resting at the country residence outside Moscow after being diagnosed last Thursday with bronchitis. Doctors had said that his condition was not serious and he needed to rest, but his condition apparently deteriorated, forcing his hospitalization Monday. The Kremlin said the president would be hospitalized for about a week, according to the Interfax news agency.

What is pneumonia?
Pneumonia means that there is an infection or inflammation in the lung tissue. It can be caused by a lot of different micro-organisms - viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites that are too small to see - but it can also be caused by corrosive chemicals breathed into the stomach or toxic gases from a fire.
Pneumonia is still a common disease. Many people die from it every year, most commonly women and people over the age of 70. The overall death rate due to pneumonia is currently 5 per cent.
Half of all pneumonia cases are caused by bacteria . The streptococcus bacteria, known as pneumococcus, is the main cause of the most typical pneumonia.
