Recent studies have shown that pituitary tumors are not rare and occur in nearly 20% of adults, worldwide. Although clinically significant, many of these tumors go undiagnosed for years. The abnormal hormone production caused by these tumors has severe and debilitating effects on growth, reproductive and sexual function, and neuroimmune function. The purpose of this symposium is to increase awareness and scientific understanding of the all-encompassing nature of pituitary disorders in order to increase earlier diagnosis, disseminate knowledge of state of the art treatments, and pique interest in novel scientific study of the pathophysiology of these disorders and their many ramifications. Structured as a one-day, interactive meeting, the symposium will be co-chaired by Dr. Ian McCutcheon, M.D., Profesor of Neursurgery, University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Edward Oldfield, M.D., Chief, Surgical Neurology Branch, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. www.orwhsymposium.com

Front Page Previous Story Next Story Early Diagnosis of Pituitary Tumors Urged at Symposium By Abhijit Ghosh Growing up, Robert Knutzen had such large hands that his mother would try to hide them under the blanket for fear her first born would be stigmatized. At the recent "Family Hormonal Health Symposium on Pituitary Disorders" sponsored by the Office of Research on Women's Health, Knutzen shared his personal insight on living with acromegaly. A host of fellow patients and scientists showcased the difficulties of living with the disorder and called for earlier diagnosis of pituitary tumors. "It is while the patient has every normal outward appearance that he or she needs to be diagnosed and have treatment started," declared Knutzen, co-founder and CEO of the Pituitary Tumor Network Association. Speakers presented a broad review of the pituitary gland and the latest research. The pituitary is located on the surface of the brain. It plays an essential role in growth and receives input from the brain and the rest of the body. The gland then integrates information and responds by producing hormones to regulate other glands and bodily functions. Robert Knutzen, co-founder and CEO of the Pituitary Tumor Network Association, shared his personal insight on living with acromegaly.

Disorders Affecting the Pituitary Gland
The pituitary gland is sometimes called the master gland of the endocrine system, because it controls the functions of the other endocrine glands. The pituitary gland is no larger than a pea, located at the base of the brain. The gland is attached to the hypothalamus (a part of the brain that affects the pituitary gland) by nerve fibers. The pituitary gland itself consists of three sections, which each produce certain hormones:
  • anterior (front) lobe produces growth hormone, prolactin (to stimulate milk production after giving birth), ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), and LH (luteinizing hormone).

Organizations What is Pituitary Tumors? Is there any treatment? Pituitary tumors are best treated when they are found and diagnosed early. Treatments for pituitary tumors include surgical removal of the tumor; radiation therapy, using high-doses of x-rays to kill tumor cells; and/or drug therapy, using certain medications to block the pituitary gland from producing too many hormones. The most common treatment is surgery. What is the prognosis?

What if these symptoms are not the result of stress, diet, or aging, but are actually caused by a hormonal disorder? Symptoms of hormone deficiency or excess may be subtle and difficult to diagnose. Our thanks to Dr. Daniel Kelly (Associate Professor of Neurosurgery - UCLA) and Dr. Pejman Cohan (Assistant Clinical Professor of Endocrinology - UCLA) for providing the following disorder information. Greetings, If you are just learning about pituitary tumors and the many associated problems and hormonal disorders let us start with a frank discussion of where you are: Pituitary Tumors, though described insome textbooks as "benign" can be very aggressive and can do irreparable harm. Some can even be lethal IF NOT PROPERLY TREATED! Do not allow your physicans, or yourself or family to treat these tumors lightly or in a start and stop fashion. Get highly qualified professional help. As with cancer or heart disease, you need expert help, only. The last sixty years have been remarkable in pituitary endocrinology. In the 1930's for instance, Cushings Disease was a death sentence; patients lived an average of 4.7 years after presentation of illness. In the 1950's, the five year survival rate was 50%. The cure rate for microadenomas today is approximately 90% and improving. Experts in Neurosurgery and Pituitary Endocrinology have so improved the cure rate in a mere 60 plus years that the general medical community, and certainly insurance companies and others, tend to think of Pituitary Disease the way they think of Polio. The threat is over and the scourge has left us. Sadly, with Pituitary Tumors this is not the case. Each and every patient has to be evaluated and "fought for" or the battle may be lost.
