You can confirm your suspicions by checking your child for worms at night with a flashlight. You can also check for the presence of worms by pressing a piece of transparent tape to your child's anus. Eggs will stick to the tape, and you can take it to your pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may also have a special kit designed to collect pinworm eggs. (You can often find the eggs even if you can't detect the actual worms.) If you don't find pinworms or eggs, anal itching may signal other problems, including dryness from cleaning the area too vigorously with soap. Red, tender skin around his anus could also be the result of irritation from

All horses have internal parasites. Ninety percent of all the colic cases may be related to blood vessel damage caused by the migrating larvae of Strongylus vulgaris (blood worms). Fifty percent of the deaths in horses may be related to internal parasites. Internal parasites have adapted themselves to the internal environment of their host animal and have become host-specific. Horse parasites can only exist in horses and cattle parasites only in cattle. If a cow eats the eggs or larvae of a horse parasite (or vice versa), the life cycle of the parasite is broken. This can be a factor in developing parasite control programs.
Major Parasites
There are five major kinds of equine internal parasites: large and small strongyles, ascarids, bots, and pinworms.
Large and Small Strongyles
The most common and most destructive of all internal parasites in the equine are the large strongyles (blood worms). Strongyles can be seen in horses of all ages, except in very young foals. Strongyles range in length from 1/2" to 2".

Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis
As the most common nematode parasite of humans in North America and Europe, pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) infect more than 400 million people worldwide. Living in the large intestine, pinworm infestations may be asymptomatic or result in mild irritations of the gastrointestinal tract. Mature female pinworms are about twice as long as the 5-millimeter-long males, which live only until copulation occurs. When she is ready to lay her 10,000 plus eggs, the female nematode crawls out of the host's anus, deposits the eggs on the perianal skin, and then dies. At the average human body temperature of 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the eggs develop rapidly and reach their third juvenile stage as infective eggs in approximately 6 hours. The eggs are ingested by another human host and hatch in the small intestine. In about a month, the parasitic nematodes reach maturity and reproduce sexually, reinitiating the life cycle. A common symptom of a pinworm infestation is perianal itching associated with the nocturnal egg-laying habits of E. vermicularis

Pawpaws and Mastodons, Logferns and Pinworms Lytton John Musselman Asimina (which appropriately is a Native American name). There are nine species in the Southeastern United States. Only two are widespread, however. These are the dwarf pawpaw ( Asimina parviflora ) which occurs in deep sand and the common pawpaw, ( Asimina triloba) . Common pawpaw is found mainly in forested Wetlands and reaches its greatest ecological importance in alluvial forests of the Ohio Valley. In Southeastern Virginia and neighboring North Carolina, plants associated with pawpaw include red maple, Japanese honeysuckle, American holly, etc.,- all plants typical of forested wetlands. I note that in Region I, pawpaw is listed as a FACU+² but based on my field experience in the southeast, I suggest it may better be classified as a FACW. Eurytides marcellus Cramer) feed almost exclusively on pawpaw but few other insects cherish it. This is particularly interesting because the leaves are large and somewhat succulent, and would appear inviting to insects. But there is good reason why pawpaws are not attacked. They contain a natural insecticide based on a group of compounds called acetogenins. In limited tests at Purdue University, extracts from all parts of the plant have yielded significant amounts of the compound. This insecticide has shown efficacy against a broad group of insects. Dryopteris ) are plants found in diversity of habitats including Wetlands. For many years, we have been studying the Dismal Swamp logfern

ED'SNet homepage Pinworms These small, round worms, also known as threadworms, are the most common kind of worms found in the human body. When a child scratches his/ her anus, the eggs stick under the nails and are carried to his/ her mouth where they are swallowed. The eggs then pass to the small intestine where they develop into adult worms. Fertilized females wander outside the anus and deposit a new crop of eggs there. Intense itching and irritation of the anus and surrounding areas are the symptoms. Transmission Swallowing the eggs of the worm in water or food contracts transmission pinworms. Prevention and treatment To prevent transmission of pinworms, the affected person should thoroughly clean his/her anus after bowel movements, and wash his/her hands thoroughly. Also, the fingernails should be clipped short and scrubbed clean before eating. A good worm medicine will eradicate (kill all of) the worms. Roundworms This pinkish-white worm is usually about 20 to 30 cm long and easily seen when passed. When the eggs are swallowed, they pass to the small intestine where they hatch - sometimes as many as 200,000 in one day! The young worms travel to the lungs. They are coughed into the mouth and return to the intestines. Infection with roundworms can cause itching or fevers.

Pinworms are parasites that live in the intestines and survive by eating nutrients from the person's food. Pinworm infections are common and spread easily. They are usually caused by swallowing the eggs of the pinworm after coming in contact with an infected person or with an object that has eggs on its surface. Infection can also be spread when a person inhales airborne eggs, but this is rare. On rare occasions, pinworm infection persists because eggs hatch outside the anus and the young worms crawl back inside the intestines. Symptoms of pinworms include:
  • Itching around the anus. For most children this symptom is mild. Only rarely do children have very severe itching.

Pinworm Infection
What are pinworms? Pinworms are white, parasitic worms that can live in the large intestine of humans. They are about one-half inch long. While the infected person sleeps, female pinworms leave the intestinal tract and lay their eggs on the skin around the anus. The eggs are laid in a sticky, jelly-like substance that, along with the wriggling of the female pinworm, causes severe itching. Who gets pinworm infection? Pinworm is the most common worm infection in the United States. School-age children, followed by preschoolers, have the highest rates of infection. Cases of pinworm infection are seen most often at schools, day care centers and other institutional settings. What are the symptoms of a pinworm infection?
