Pinworms
Brief Version
What are pinworms?
A pinworm is a white, short, very thin worm. You may see them around your child's anus (where the bowel movements, or BM's, come out). You may also see them in a BM. If your child's bottom itches, your child may have pinworms. Pinworms are not serious. But they need to be treated. Use a flashlight to check for pinworms.
  • Look around the anus for the small, white worms. Look a few hours after your child goes to bed or check first thing in the morning. Check two nights or two mornings in a row.

What is a pinworm?
A pinworm is a white, very thin worm about 1/4 inch long that moves. If it doesn't wiggle, it's probably lint or a thread. Pinworms usually are seen in the anal and buttock area, especially at night or early in the morning. Sometimes a pinworm is found on the surface of a bowel movement. More than 10% of children have pinworms. They do not cause any serious health problems. However, they can cause much itching and irritation of the anal area and bottom.

http://www.billerica.mec.edu/nurse/Carole/topics_of_interest/pinworms.htm
Pinworms Pinworms are tiny worms that infect humans (but not animals) and live in the lower intestine. Female worms (resembling short, white threads less than 1/2 inch long) come out through the anus at night and lay their microscopic eggs around the opening. In some cases, this causes intense itching. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, pinworms do not cause teeth grinding or bed-wetting and are not dangerous, just irritating. Transmission It is estimated that 5 to 15% of individuals in the United States have pinworms. Members of an infected person's household can be infected and reinfect a treated individual. When children or adults scratch the irritation, microscopic pinworm eggs may be transferred to someone else's mouth or food via the fingers. Eggs may be ingested that will hatch into worms in the intestines. Individuals may be reinfected by ingesting eggs on their own hands. Pinworms can be indirectly spread through contact with clothing or bedding that has been contaminated with eggs. The period of infectivity lasts as long as eggs are being discharged around the anus. Eggs remain infective in an indoor environment for 2 to 3 weeks. Diagnosis: The worms crawl out at night to lay their eggs while the child lies still and sleeps. The easiest way to find them is to inspect a 1 inch circular area around the child's anus about 1 hour after the child has gone to sleep. By spreading the buttocks and looking with a flashlight, a parent can see the worms crawling toward the opening of the anus. A health care provider can make the diagnosis by having the parent apply the sticky side of transparent tape around the anal area so eggs will stick to it. The best time is upon awakening in the morning, before bathing. The tape is then placed sticky side down on a slide and examined under a microscope.

Pinworms
By Henriette Pinworms are admirably adapted to the human host, and don't do any damage, except that you scratch your ass all the time. If friends visit your place, and you have had pinworms for a while (which implies microscopic pinworm eggs everywhere, including your breathing air), your friends start scratching -their- asses about two weeks after their visit. Two weeks is the time it takes the eggs to grow into mature pinworms, mate, and lay eggs outside your rectum, making it itch.
Hmmmm, your friends go, trying to figure out where they might have caught it, remembering the way your cat, dog, and toddler dragged their asses along the floor. And your social life suffers. Lots. The females make short excursions around the anus to lay their eggs (which is why the itch). Older pinworms die and are eliminated with your feces. The eggs sort of fall off. However, you get new pinworm eggs in your breathing air with every breath you take, if you live in a pinworm household. First you burn the pinworm house. (I once asked those in the know about vacuum cleaners. They looked at me with pity in their eyes, and sniggered.)

He got it from a playmate or nursery school. The eggs, which are laid on the skin surrounding the anus, drop off and become airborne and can be picked up on hands almost anywhere in the child's vicinity, but especially the bed and bedroom because they are laid at night. The best preventative is absolute immaculate housekeeping: VACUUM the mattress in the kid's room, and the carpet and discard the bag every day or so until the episode is over when you change the sheets, don't wave them in the air, roll them up and stuff them in the washer with HOT water and soap Same for his clothing ... from child directly to washer every morning and washcloths and towels.
Have everyone WASH their hands frequently, with lots of soap, a brush for under the fingernails and hot water. Clean towels for every time (paper towels are great). From: m52557986.aol.com (Marilyn)

What could be more "yuk" than pinworms? Yet these harmless little beasties are fairly common among children, even those who do not have the usual symptom of itching. It is estimated that 40 million people in the U.S. have pinworms at any given time. Approximately 10 percent of children in childcare are likely to be infected with pinworm (often called "seat worms" or "thread worms"). Adults are less commonly infected, although they can have them, too. First, what is a pinworm? The technical name is "enterobius vermicularis"some very big words for animals that are generally less than half an inch in length. The worms look like tiny gray bits of threadthat wiggle! The trouble they cause also is way out of proportion to their size. The tiny pinworm, a variety of roundworm, is whitish in color. Pinworms are difficult to find because most of the time they live happily in the lower part of the large intestine, just inside the anus. At night, while the child is sleeping and not physically active, the pregnant female worms come out to lay eggs in the folds of skin around the anus. They then go back inside the body and shortly die. Within two-four weeks, the eggs hatch and the adult females repeat the process of coming out of the anus, laying eggs, and going back in.

    Medical Term
Infection, pinworm An infection caused by a small, white intestinal worm: the pinworm or, more formally, Enterobius vermicularis. The pinworm is about the length of a staple and lives for the most part within the rectum of humans. While an infected person is asleep, female pinworms leave the intestines through the anus and deposit eggs on the skin around the anus. Because Enterobius vermicularis is a pinworm, pinworm infection is also called enterobiasis. The symptoms of a pinworm infection are caused by the female pinworm laying her eggs. Most symptoms of pinworm infection are mild, and many infected people have no symptoms or, at most , some itching around the anus, disturbed sleep , and irritability. However, if the infection is heavy, these symptoms may be correspondingly more severe and also include loss of appetite, restlessness, and insomnia.

Back to table of contents Pinworms-Enterobiasis Vernicularis The mother of a 5 year old boy brings her son to your office because the child has been having difficulty sleeping at night because of severe itching in the perineal area. What advice would you give the mother? Pinworms are caused by a nematode that most commonly affects children. They are found in all socio-economic classes and are world-wide. The life cycle of the pinworm begins after ingesting eggs that hatch in the stomach and duodenum. The larva migrate to the cecum where the male and females mate. The female then migrates to the perineal area and lays her eggs. The female dies after laying her eggs. The cycle is repeated by ingesting the eggs picked up after touching the perineal area. The entire cycle takes about 4-6 weeks. Infection may be spread by crowded conditions and close contact with infected individuals. Occasionally eggs may be spread by housedust. Symptoms
  • The presence of eggs in the perineal area causes itching that may interfere with sleep.
  • May cause vaginal itching and vulvovaginitis when worms migrate into the vagina.
