Pinworms
Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in the large intestine. The female worms lay their eggs around the anus at night. Symptoms include anal itching, sleeplessness, irritability, and anal irritation due to scratching. Pinworms may also be present without symptoms. Pinworms are common in school-aged children. Pinworms are spread when an uninfected person touches the anal area of an infected person (e.g., during diaper changing) or sheets or other articles contaminated with pinworm eggs, then touches the mouth, transferring the eggs, and swallows the eggs. An infected person can spread pinworms by scratching the anal area, then contaminating food or other objects which are then eaten or touched by uninfected persons. Pinworms can be spread as long as either worms or eggs are present. Eggs can survive up to 2 weeks away from a human host. To prevent the spread of pinworms: If you suspect a child has pinworms, call the parents and ask them to have the child diagnosed. Exclude a child with pinworms from the child care facility until 24 hours after the the child has seen a physician and received the first treatment. The entire family may have to be treated to prevent reinfection. Observe proper handwashing among children and adults, particularly before eating and after using the toilet. Clean and disinfect bathroom surfaces. Vacuum carpeted areas. Machine wash bed linens and hand towels using

Pinworms, roundworms, ringworms and hookworms are worms or fungai that commonly infect people, mostly children. I will describe each and what you need to do to get rid of them.
Pinworms, roundworms, ringworms and hookworms are worms or fungai that commonly infect people, mostly children. Worm infestation is common in children throughout the world. There are large worms, microscopic worms, and all sizes in between. The four most common worms that people get will be reviewed in this article. Roundworms, also known as ascariasis, are most commonly contracted in tropical climates. However, at least 4 million children in the US are diagnosed with it each year. Round worms are found in the soil, but were originally placed there through human or animal feces. The worms can live for years in the soil. When a child plays in the dirt with their hands and then puts their hands into their mouths they can get these worms. Roundworms can be diagnosed through a stool sample by your doctor. Some of the complications that can come of roundworms are nutritional deficiencies, or intestinal obstructions. Your doctor will give you a medication to kill the worm in your intestines. Ringworm is not really a worm, but a fungus. It is still highly contagious and can be spread from person to person. They are usually transmitted via the family pet to a child. Cats are the most common carrier of these worms because the owner doesn’t usually know they are infected. When dogs get ringworm you will see the symptoms fairly soon. Their hair falls out and large bare patches will indicate you need to take them to the vet. Hair loss does not occur in cats. The symptoms on humans is scaly patches of skin and hair loss can occur. You will know you have ring worm when the scaly patch is a circle and the outer rim is formed into a ring. The doctor will prescribe an antifungal cream.

Definition: Pinworms are small worms that infect the intestines. They are common in children and easy to treat.
Alternative Names: Enterobiasis; Oxyuriasis
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Pinworms are the most common worm infection in the United States, primarily affecting school-age children. Pinworm eggs are spread directly from person to person or by touching bedding, food, or other items contaminated with the eggs. Typically, children unknowingly touch the eggs and puts their fingers in their mouth. The eggs are swallowed. The eggs eventually hatch in the small intestine and worms mature in the colon. Female worms then move to the child's anal area, especially at night, and deposit more eggs. This may cause intense itching and the area may even become infected. When the child scratches the itching anal area, the eggs can get under the child's fingernails and be transferred to other children, family members, and items in the house.

How to Treat Pinworms
Pinworms are tiny parasitic worms that live in your large intestine. While they do not pose a significant health problem, they are a nuisance. Symptoms include anal itching, sleeplessness, irritability, and anal irritation due to scratching. Steps: Assess whether you or your child have pinworms. The simplest method is to place a piece of cellophane tape against the anus. Do this first thing in the morning, before bathing or having a bowel movement. The eggs and sometimes a worm will get stuck to the tape. Then they can be brought to your doctor for a diagnosis. Treat the pinworms once they're diagnosed. Many safe and effective medications are available, both over the counter and by prescription. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a recommendation. Treat all family members, whether they have symptoms or not. Pinworms are very easily transmitted.

Does everyone have pinworms?
19-Dec-2000 Dear Straight Dope: I've been itching to ask these questions for some time, but it's not exactly a subject you bring up with your roommate or business colleague. Is it true that everyone has some pinworms in their colon and the worms are only noticed when they overpopulate? Also, is it true that garlic can rid the bowels of pinworms? Irae Noir SDSTAFF Lynn replies: Enterobius vermicularis . Alternative names: seatworm; enterobiasis Enterobius vermicularis; oxyuriasis; threadworm; pinworm infection Mom was right. You should always wash your hands thoroughly with soap after using the bathroom and before handling food or eating. We don't all have pinworm, but an awful lot of us do. Pinworm is the most common human worm infection in the United States. According to various reports, rates of infection vary from 10% to almost 50% in children under 12, depending on the group. School-age children have the highest incidence of infection, followed by preschoolers. Like lice, pinworm is readily spread through schools and child care centers. Adults are much less likely to have pinworm, unless the adult is a caretaker of infected children. Sometimes pinworm is spread to other family members as well. Pinworm eggs are collected on the fingers, generally when the patient scratches his itchy bottom. From there, the eggs can be spread to other surfaces, where they can live for several days, just waiting to be picked up and swallowed by their next host. If the patient puts his fingers in his mouth, the eggs can be swallowed and reinfect him. These pinworms, incidentally, infect only humans and a few kinds of apes. They do not infect common household pets.

    pinworms
Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis , for all you taxonomists) are a common parasite of humans. I've read that perhaps 40 or 50% of us harbor at least a few pinworms at any given time. They are tiny white threadlike creatures, about a quarter of an inch long. They live in the colon of humans only. They are harmless and cause no symptoms except itching around the anus. Repeat: no belly aches from pinworms, no weight loss, nothing but itch (admittedly, it can be quite an itch). It's icky to think of, but let's face it: pinworms are a manifestation of our generally poor hygeine when it comes to the toilet. A brief review of the life cycle of the pinworm explains why. The little creature crawls out of the anus and lays eggs. The eggs cause itching. Itching gets scratched. The fingernails have eggs on them. Things get touched with contaminated fingers. Fingers go directly in the mouth (reinfection) or new fingers pick up eggs by touching contaminated objects. Then THOSE fingers go in the mouth. Then the eggs hatch in the GI tract of a new person and off we go. The symptoms are squirming and scratching of the area around the anus, especially at night when the little buggers come out. If you want to check the child suspected of pinworms, go in about a half hour after bedtime and examine the area around the anus for the little white threads. Alternatively, your doctor may want you to do a Scotch-tape slide test before treating.

Pinworms are small nematode worms that are parasites on horses, rabbits, and other mammals. One type infests the human intestines and rectum. These pinworms are also called "seatworms" or "threadworms". They often occur in children between the ages of five and fourteen. Pinworms are not dangerous but can be irritating and lead to skin infections due to scratching. The female pinworm lives in the intestine and crawls to the opening of the rectum at night to lay her eggs. The sticky coating that attaches the eggs to the skin is irritating and causes itching. The young pinworms are transferred to the hands when the child scratches. Pinworm eggs are very small and can be breathed in from the air or can be swallowed when a child puts dirty hands in their mouth. Pinworms may also be spread from objects such as toys or clothing. Pinworms are easily treated with a medication that is taken as a pill. Because pinworm eggs are so small, they can be spread easily from person to person in the same household. If one person in the home has pinworms, others may be infected.

    Topic Overview
What are pinworms? Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) are a type of parasite that live in the lower digestive system of humans and survive by eating nutrients from the person's food. They are common throughout the world, especially in school-age children. Adult pinworms are small, threadlike roundworms no more than 12.7 mm (0.5 in.) long. Their eggs are oval-shaped, flat on one side, and cannot be seen without a microscope. Pinworms are also called "seat worms" or "bits of white thread" worms. What causes pinworms? You usually get pinworms by swallowing their eggs. This happens when someone with pinworms scratches around the anus , gets eggs on his or her hands (or under the fingernails), and touches you or an object that you later touch. Pinworms are spread easily in families, daycare centres, schools, camps, and institutional adult living environments.

weblife.org library Humanure Handbook Chapter 7 More on Parasitic Worms / Pinworms Previous Page Bottom Next Page MORE ON PARASITIC WORMS This is a good subject to discuss in greater detail as it is rarely a topic of conversation in social circles, yet it is important to those who are concerned about potential pathogens in compost. Therefore, let's look at the most common of human worm parasites: pinworms, hookworms, whipworms, and roundworms. PINWORMS A couple of my kids had pinworms at one time during their childhood. I know exactly who they got them from (another kid), and getting rid of them was a simple matter. However, the rumor was circulated that they got them from our compost. We were also told to worm our cats to prevent pinworms in the kids (these rumors allegedly originated in a doctor's office). Yet, the pinworm life cycle does not include a stage in soil, compost, manure, or cats. These unpleasant parasites are spread from human to human by direct contact, and by inhaling eggs. Pinworms ( Enterobius vermicularis ) lay microscopic eggs at the anus of a human being, its only known host. This causes itching at the anus which is the primary symptom of pinworm infestation. The eggs can be picked up almost anywhere; once in the human digestive system they develop into the tiny worms. Some estimate that pinworms infest or have infested 75% of all New York City children in the three to five year age group, and that similar figures exist for other cities.
