Pinkeye rarely kills cattle, but it causes them discomfort and has economic consequences. In addition to the expense of treatment, pinkeye is associated with weaning weight reductions of as much as 35 lbs. It can lead to disfigurement and blindness (which can result in market discounts), and it's often inconvenient to treat individual cattle in pastures. Pinkeye is a term used for a set of symptoms. These include tearing and discharge from the eyes; inflammation of the tissues around the eyeball (conjunctivitis), squinting and aversion to bright light; and ulcerations or cloudiness in the center of the front part of the eye (cornea). The disease can take three weeks to a month to heal and often leaves a scar on the eye.

Allergic pinkeye
Pinkeye (or conjunctivitis) from an allergy is not contagious and often occurs during the same season, year after year. A substance ( allergen ) causes a reaction in the lining of the eye that makes the eye red, swollen, itchy, and teary. Spring and fall are the most common times of the year for this kind of pinkeye to occur. Pinkeye can be caused by many substances that come in contact with the eye, such as eye medications (especially those containing neomycin), makeup, contact lens solution, or chemical fumes. Pinkeye caused by contact with a substance may occur in one eye only. These eye symptoms may also bother people who have other allergy-related problems, such as hay fever, asthma, and skin allergies (eczema). Symptoms of pinkeye caused by an allergy include:
  • Redness, swelling, tearing, and itching. White, stringy drainage.
You may have similar nose or throat allergy symptoms when you have allergic pinkeye.

It's the most common eye disease in America and can be highly contagious. Pinkeye often spreads rapidly among children and their families, creating a local epidemic. Pinkeye, or conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the lining that covers the inside of the eyelid and the surface of the eye. Blood vessels in the lining expand and create a pink or red coloring. Children spread the contagious forms that are caused by bacteria or viruses. Allergies or an over-chlorinated pool or other chemical irritation can trigger conjunctivitis that isn't contagious.

FAQ: Blindness Due to Pinkeye
Maxine Kinne
Q. One of my goats became blind in one eye, but it is better now. Now , several weeks later, another one is blind in both eyes. The white part of the eyes is very red. Can I treat this myself?
Injury or disease may cause temporary or permanently blindness, especially if untreated. Have your veterinarian look at this affected goat(s) to diagnose it and prescribe medication. You will probably have to put some special ophthalmic ointment in the goat's eyes several times a day for a few days. Pinkeye infection causes cloudiness on the eye surface (cornea). The condition is very painful, and tears run from the eye. Goats with pinkeye prefer to stay in the shade because light makes it even more painful. The white part of the eye (sclera) reddens from the infection, and the pink lining under the eyelids (conjunctiva) is red and swollen, too. In severe cases, blood vessels try to grow out to the ulcer to help heal it, and you may see that if you look closely.

If you are having a "pink" eye, you should see your doctor. It can be allergies, or a viral or bacterial infection. If they are the latter two, yes, you can be infectious and your contact lenses should be cleaned very well. If you are wearing soft contact lenses, they should be discarded. Your open contact lens solutions and contact lens case should be discarded as well.

PINKEYE
Pinkeye ( infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis ) is a common infectious disease affecting the eyes of cattle. The name describes the redness and inflammation of the lining of the eyelid and eyeball. Although pinkeye is non-fatal, it has a marked economic impact on the cattle industry. It is known to occur at all seasons of the year and in all breeds of cattle. Pinkeye and foot rot are the two most prevalent conditions affecting all breeding beef females One or both eyes may be involved. Excessive weeping of the affected eye and closure due to pain are the two signs most commonly observed. As the disease progresses, the cornea becomes cloudy or white. An ulcer (eroded circular spot) frequently develops near the center of the cornea. Cattle with pinkeye keep the affected eye or eyes closed because of pain and to avoid bright sunlight. They lose weight because they are reluctant to forage for feed and water. The course of the infection may run for 4 to 8 weeks, or even longer. As the eye begins to heal, white scar tissue infiltrates the cornea. In most cases this scar will gradually disappear as healing progresses and vision will be restored. However, in severely affected eyes, a white scar often persists and interferes with vision. If the ulceration is severe enough to penetrate all layers of cells forming the cornea, the fluid in the eyeball will escape. This results in the iris and/or lens protruding partially or entirely through the ulceration. If this occurs, there will be permanent blindness in the affected eye.
