Pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, is an infectious and contagious disease that affects the eyes of cattle. It is characterized by reddening and inflammation of the lining or conjunctiva of the eyelid and eyeball. It is primarily a summertime disease but is seen during all seasons. Pinkeye affects all breeds of cattle. It is much more common in pastured cattle than in feedlots. Pinkeye is found in cattle of all ages but primarily young animals. The causative agent is the bacterium Moraxella bovis . Cattle often carry Moraxella bovis but are immune to actual infection and do not show disease. Young animals have low immunity to Moraxella bovis and are the most susceptible. They are usually on pasture where they may not be observed every day. Pinkeye is spread by direct or indirect contact with infected cattle. Face flies are a major vector for animal to animal transfer of the infectious agents. They feed on eye secretions from infected animals and transfer the bacteria from animal to animal.

PINKEYE IN GOATS
Pinkeye in goats may be caused by several different agents though the symptoms are similar. Pinkeye can be the result of infectious or non-infectious organisms. Since infectious Pinkeye is also contagious and is most commonly the type that goat producers encounter, this article will focus on it. Non-infectious Pinkeye can occur in individual animals as a result of over-exposure to very bright sunlight, dusty hay, or blowing dust (either in pastures or trailers while being transported). Treatment is similar to that used in medicating infectious Pinkeye and will be discussed briefly later in this article. Infectious Pinkeye can be caused by viruses or bacteria and is medically termed infectious keratoconjunctivitis. Pinkeye can be brought on by stress . . . stress from moving the goat, stress caused by severe weather or dramatic weather changes, or stress arising from an underlying illness (abortion, pneumonia) . Stress reduces the immune system's ability to overcome the causative agents of Pinkeye. Flies do a great job of transmitting Pinkeye from goat to goat; keeping the fly population down is important. Shows and sales are ideal places for goats to pick up infectious Pinkeye. The viral mechanism that causes the abortion disease Chlamydia often brings with it a virulent form of Pinkeye. In fact, sometimes the first recognizable sign of an impending abortion is Pinkeye. Certain types of Pinkeye, particularly Chlamydia-induced infections, tend to be chronic (recurring) because the goat becomes a carrier. . . . able to infect others and have repeated bouts of the disease itself.

Topic Overview
Pinkeye (also called conjunctivitis) is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen. See illustrations of a normal eye and one with conjunctivitis Pinkeye is very common. It usually is not serious and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. Common symptoms of pinkeye are:
  • Eye redness (hyperemia). Swollen, red eyelids. More tearing than usual. Feeling as if something is in the eye (foreign-body sensation or keratoconjunctivitis). An itching or burning feeling. Mild sensitivity to light ( photophobia Drainage from the eye.
Most cases of pinkeye are caused by:

Pinkeye or conjunctivitis, is a very contagious infection of the eye. It is characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and eyeballs. It occurs in the membrane that line the eyelids and the eyeball to the edge of the cornea. Pinkeye can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Pollutants like allergies, chemicals, dust, and smoke may increase the problem. Swimming may be linked to it because of exposure to chlorine in public pools or to contaminated water. Symptoms may last several days or up to two weeks. They include:
* redness in the white of the eye,
* a sandy feeling in the eye,
* burning,
* itching,
* blurred vision and sensitivity to light, and
* discharge in the eye that forms a crust during the night sealing the eye shut. If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed. The child must not touch the eye and must wash his or her hands often. Conjunctivitis can be easily passed from eye to eye or from person to person. It can spread through a whole classroom of children in just a few days. Children should not return to school until they have had 24 hours of treatment. Warm compresses may relieve some discomfort. Seek medical care for the child if the following symptoms exist:
* a painful red eye

Pinkeye (Conjunctivitis)
What is Pinkeye?
Pinkeye is sometimes called conjunctivitis (con junk tiv eye tiss). It is an infection of the surface of the eyeball and the inside of the eyelid. There are several causes of pinkeye. Usually it is an infection from a virus or bacteria. But pinkeye can also be caused by an allergy, by air pollution, or by rubbing the eyes too much. Pinkeye is a common childhood disease. It spreads to other people very easily.
What does it look like?
Pinkeye usually makes the whites of the eyes turn pink or red. It often causes discomfort in the eyes, including a feeling of "grittiness," burning, and/or itching. There may also be a lot of tears and pus in the eyes. If there is pus, this will often make the eyelids stick together when the person wakes up after a sleep. A cloth dipped in warm water and applied gently to the affected area will help remove any crusty discharge.
Is pinkeye dangerous?

Classic pinkeye is thought of as a summer and autumn disease. The organism that causes pinkeye, Moraxella bovis , is usually transmitted by face flies active in the warm months. However, a variation of Moraxella bovis can cause an outbreak of pinkeye in the winter when there is little fly activity. The nonhemolytic version of Moraxella bovis and a virus called ocular IBR are the chief causes of "winter pinkeye." Let's review classic pinkeye, which is prevalent in warm months. Moraxella bovis will generally cause a white opacity in the eye's center with excessive tear production and reddening of the conjunctiva. In a classic outbreak, the yearling cattle in their first grazing season are most severely affected. English breeds, particularly Hereford cattle, seem to be the most susceptible. Many observers have said that Zebu-type cattle (Brahman or cattle with humps over their shoulders) rarely suffer from pinkeye. Moraxella bovis will hibernate in the nostrils of carrier animals over the winter, waiting for the flies' reemergence in the spring.

Pediatrics Question and Answer by Dr. Henry Bernstein
Please Read Our
Q. My child was diagnosed with pinkeye and had to miss school because of it. It that really necessary? A. Yes. Pinkeye (also known as "conjunctivitis") involves the outer protective part of the eyeball and inside part of the eyelids. Infection is the most common cause and is easily spread through direct contact with fingers contaminated by germs. Other things less commonly cause conjunctivitis like allergies (eyes tend to water a lot and be very itchy) or chemicals (for example, when kids are swimming underwater in a pool with their eyes open, chlorine can irritate their eyes). Pinkeye infections are often self-limiting. Kids may feel a little scratchiness and mild pain from the redness and inflammation of the white parts of the eye. This is why they tend to rub their eyes so much. Realize that we all touch the parts of our faces eyes, nose, and mouth constantly. So, it should not be a surprise when this infection spreads to the other eye or to other kids or family members. Usually vision is not affected except by the discharge of pus that may block sight temporarily. Both bacteria and viruses cause pinkeye, but bacteria cause it twice as often. The diagnosis is made clinically. A culture of the pus from the eye is usually not necessary. Antibiotics shorten the duration of symptoms and decrease the spread to others. Eye ointments tend to stay about the eye longer than drops do and are usually easier to apply with less fuss. However, some kids do not like the blurry, sticky feel of their eyes for up to an hour or so after applying the medicine. Depending on the severity of the infection (usually mild), antibiotics by mouth are not normally needed.
