If your overall health is in the pink, your eyeballs shouldn't be. But when you have an allergic reaction to somethingpollen, cosmetics, chlorine in a swimming pool or even substances in the airor when you come in contact with someone who has an eye infection, the white portion of your eyes can suddenly turn ( ugh! ) the color of Malibu Barbie's Corvette. As if that weren't bad enough, your eyes can be itchy and irritated; in some cases, there may also be a discharge of pus or fluid around the eyes. All because of conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, a highly bothersome but usually relatively harmless inflammation of the surface of the eye. Aside from your own allergic reaction, you can get pinkeye from irritants in your environment, such as chemicals, or as the result of casual contact with someone who's infected. So you can get pinkeye by using the same towel as someone who's infected or even by touching the person's hands and then rubbing your eyes. That's one reason why conjunctivitis is especially common in children. Usually the inflammation will disappear on its own within 48 hours. But here's how to quicken your recovery and ease your discomfort.

Pinkeye When Your Eyes "Have a Cold" Pinkeye is the commonly used term for an eye infection known as conjunctivitis. It's sometimes called red-eye, because the infection renders the eyeball (or eyeballs) either pink or bloodshot red. If you have pinkeye, your eyelids may be irritated and itchy, and your eyes may leak a watery discharge, just like your nose does when you have a cold. Pinkeye may be caused by a virus and may accompany a chest cold or sore throat. But it may also be caused by bacteria or irritations such as dry eyes, pollution or allergies, says Dickie McMullan, M.D., an ophthalmologist in private practice in Atlanta. Chances are, if you get pinkeye in one eye, it will spread to your other eye, no matter how careful you are, says Jody Piltz, M.D., assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

Pinkeye Treatment for Cattle Livestock Update, June 1998 Dr. Dee Whittier, Extension Veterinarian,
Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech Pinkeye is a bacterial eye disease that is very common in Virginia Cattle. It occurs most often during the summer but may occur any time of the year. Considerable economic loss occurs because of weight gain losses in calves and because of lost value of cattle who are left with eye scars or who are blind. Recent research data on pinkeye treatment should be considered by producers as they deal with cases of pinkeye in their herds this summer. A study dealing with a natural outbreak of pinkeye in a herd of recently weaned Hereford calves was reported recently in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (Eastman et al. JAVMA Feb. 1998. 212[4]:560-563). 119 calves were divided into three groups when the outbreak began, separated from each other, and then treated in different ways. The three treatment groups were:
    • Oxytetracycline : All calves in the group (with or without pinkeye) were given long acting tetracycline injections at the beginning of the trail. Calves with pinkeye were given a second dose of long-acting tetracycline 72 hours later. All calves in the group were fed alfalfa pellets containing oxytetracycline at a dose of 2 grams per head per day for 10 days. (Note: This level of antibiotic must be fed in a feed rather than in a mineral mix, water or other.)

Winter Pinkeye in Cattle Livestock Update, January 2000 W. Dee Whittier, Extension Veterinarian, Cattle, Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, Virginia Tech Pinkeye disease in cattle occurs most often in the summer but may be an important disease in the winter as well. Because it is associated with summer grazing producers may question the diagnosis of pinkeye in the winter. This may lead to inappropriate or unnecessary treatments or preventive approaches. Pinkeye begins as a small hole or ulcer in the clear part of the eye (the cornea). The affected animal is uncomfortable so it tends to hold the eye closed and often has increased tear production as well. While some cases heal at this point many develop into more complicated cases. The ulcer often grows in size, allowing fluids to enter the cornea and giving the eye a cloudy appearance. Cattle often become blind in the affected eye or eyes. Complications include eye perforation, inflammation of the internal eye parts resulting in a "pop eye" or prolonged healing with large scars. Pinkeye tends to occur more in the summer because eye defenses are weakened by sunlight and irritation from flies, dust and plants and their pollen. The bacteria that causes the disease is also spread by flies, especially the cattle face fly.

    FACE FLIES AND PINKEYE
by Lee Townsend, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Face flies are one of the most difficult pasture pests to control. They are on cattle only for short periods of time during the day and stay mostly on the head, which is difficult to treat with insecticides. Face flies use an abrasive sponging mouthpart to stimulate tear flow from the eyes. These flies lap up the protein rich secretions from the eye as well as nasal discharges, saliva, or blood oozing from wounds. Most of the time they are off of the animals, resting on plants, fence posts, or other objects. In addition to being very annoying to cattle, face flies play a role in the transmission of Moraxella bovis , the principal causal agent of bovine pinkeye or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis. This disease is a highly contagious inflamation of the cornea and conjunctiva of cattle. Coupled with the infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) virus, M. bovis

Bacterial and viral infections usually produce a white or yellowish pus that may cause the eyelids to stick shut in the morning. The discharge in allergic conjunctivitis is often clear and watery. All types involve redness and burning or itching eyes. Pinkeye in child care settings is most often due to bacterial or viral infections. It can usually be treated with antibiotics. Red and sore eyes may be part of viral respiratory infections, including measles. The germs that cause conjunctivitis may be present in nasal secretions, as well as in the discharge from the eyes. Persons can become infected when their hands become contaminated with these materials and they rub their eyes. Eyes can also become infected when a person uses contaminated towels or eye makeup. If a child in your facility develops pinkeye:
    • Contact the child's parents and ask them to have the child seen by the doctor. Eye injuries and foreign bodies in the eye can cause similar symptoms.

    n. An acute, very contagious form of conjunctivitis, caused by the hemophilic bacterium Hemophilus aegyptius and characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and eyeballs.
    Medical Term
Pinkeye Also called conjunctivitis . Redness or irritation of the conjunctivae, the membranes on the inner part of the eyelids and the membranes covering the whites of the eyes. These membranes react to a wide range of bacteria, viruses, allergy-provokingagents, irritants and toxic agents. Viral and bacterial forms of conjunctivitis are common in childhood. The leading cause of a red eye is virus infection. Viral pink eye is usually associated with more of a watery discharge, not green or yellow in color, and is frequently associated with viral cold-like symptoms. The eyelids may be swollen. Sometimes looking at bright lights is painful. While viral pink eye, may not require an antibiotic, the doctor should see the child, asoccasionally this form of pink eye can be associated with infectionof the cornea, (the clear portion of the front of the eyeball). This infection must be correctly detected and treated. Viral pink eye is highly contagious. The bacteria that most commonly cause pink eye arestaphylococcus, pneumococcus, and streptococcus. Symptoms includeeye pain, swelling, redness, and a moderate to large amount ofdischarge, usually yellow or greenish in color. The dischargecommonly accumulates after sleep. The eyelids may be stuck together requiring a warm wash cloth applied to the eyes to remove the discharge. This bacterial pink eye responds to repeated warm wash cloths applied to the eyes and antibiotic eye drops or ointment.

Click here to return to conditions listing. Please refer to our health precautions section before proceeding. CONJUNCTIVITIS, OR PINK EYE , is a common infection. You know you have it when your eye becomes pink and feels itchy and gritty and when you wake up in tile morning with crusted eyelids caused by a discharge. (Some people mistake the red eyes of an allergy with conjunctivitis: If you don't have a discharge, you don't have conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctira, the membrane that lines the eye, is contagious, so if you do have the symptoms, avoid sharing washcloths or towels, and wash the ones you're using regularly in hot water. If you get conjunctivitis routinely, you probably have allergic conjunctivitis. In my experience, people with this condition are almost always allergic to certain foods. Once they learn which food is the culprit and they eliminate it from their diet, the conjunctivitis clears up permanently. for more information on how to identify the cause of your allergic conjunctivitis, see Food Allergy. The other natural steps recommended in this section will help relieve discomfort until the allergen is eliminated.

    Pinkeye
Pinkeye, or conjunctivitis, is a very contagious infection of the eye. It is characterized by inflammation of the eyelids and eyeballs. It occurs in the membrane that lines the eyelids and the eyeball. Pinkeye can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Pollutants like allergens, chemicals, dust, and smoke may cause or worsen the problem. Swimming may be linked to it because of exposure to chlorine in public pools or to contaminated water. Symptoms may last several days or up to two weeks. they include:
    • redness in the white of the eye a sandy feeling in the eye burning itching blurred vision and sensitivity to light and discharge in the eye that forms a crust during the night, sealing the eye shut
If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed. The child must not touch the eye and must wash his or her hands often. Conjunctivitis can be easily passed from eye to eye or from person to person. It can spread through a whole classroom of children in just a few days. Children should not return to school until they have had 24 hours of treatment. Warm compresses may relieve some discomfort. Seek medical care for the child if the following symptoms exist:
    • a painful red eye
