PINKEYE (CONJUNCTIVITIS) IN THE CHILD CARE SETTING Pinkeye, also called conjunctivitis, can be caused by bacterial or viral infections or by allergic reactions to dust, pollen, and other materials. Bacterial and viral infections usually produce a white or yellowish pus that may cause the eyelids to stick shut in the morning. The discharge in allergic conjunctivitis is often clear and watery. All types involve redness and burning or itching eyes. Pinkeye in child care settings is most often due to bacterial or viral infections. It can usually be treated with antibiotics. Red and sore eyes may be part of viral respiratory infections, including measles. The germs that cause conjunctivitis may be present in nasal secretions, as well as in the discharge from the eyes. Persons can become infected when their hands become contaminated with these materials and they rub their eyes. Eyes can also become infected when a person uses contaminated towels or eye makeup. If a child in your facility develops pinkeye:
  • Contact the child's parents and ask them to have the child seen by the doctor. Eye injuries and foreign bodies in the eye can cause similar symptoms.

The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen. See illustrations of a normal eye and one with conjunctivitis Pinkeye is very common. It usually is not serious and goes away in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. Common symptoms of pinkeye are:
  • Eye redness (hyperemia). Swollen, red eyelids. More tearing than usual.

How to Care for Pinkeye
Conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, is an inflammation of the membrane that lines your eyeball and eyelid. It can be caused by a foreign body, an allergic reaction or a bacterial or viral infection. Steps: Determine if you have one or more of the following pinkeye symptoms: red, watery eyes; itching; sensitivity to light; or eye discharge that might be crusty around the eyelashes. Wash your hands before touching the eye area. Clean the eye area with a clean washcloth dampened with warm water. Use a cool compress to relieve itching. Wash any clothing, towels and bedding touched by the infected eye; bacterial and viral infections are very contagious. Avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection clears up. Note any yellow or greenish discharge from the eye. If this occurs or if only one eye is affected, it is more likely to be a bacterial infection than a viral infection or an allergy'consult your doctor for treatment.

CALIFORNIA CATTLEMAN, MAY 2002 PINKEYE THERAPY Last month we discussed fly control methods. One of the important aspects of fly control is decreasing face fly infestations as a method of helping to prevent pinkeye in cattle. Another aid in the prevention of pinkeye is to clip the pastures if grass is too long and headed out. The irritation of dust, plant pollen, or weed seeds will promote the heavy shedding of the pinkeye bacteria ( Moraxella bovis These carriers spread the organism by contact and face flies to the rest of the herd and the susceptible animals will become infected and have clinical pinkeye. If pinkeye cases do occur, what are the treatment options? One of the professors in the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis has completed several years of research on this subject. Dr. Lisle George has examined several methods to treat pinkeye and these and other methods are summarized below. You can obtain these from your veterinarian or other animal health product source. Study finds this childhood malady usually clears up on its own By Amanda Gardner
    HealthDay Reporter
WEDNESDAY, June 22 (HealthDay News) The common childhood infection known as pinkeye does not respond to antibiotics, a new British study finds. Instead, parents should simply let conjunctivitis clear up on its own, the researchers report in the June 21 online issue of The Lancet
"Conjunctivitis is a mild and self-limiting condition and does not need specific treatment, therefore it is wrong to continue to medicalize it," said study author Dr. Peter Rose, a university lecturer in the department of primary health care at the University of Oxford. Feb-Mar 2002
    Eye infections: Pinkeye
Q: My 6-month-old recently had a cold; on top of that, he got pinkeye. Yet no one around him had it. How did he get it? A: Viruses, bacteria or fungal agents all can cause eye infections. Little hands that wipe runny noses often wipe the eyes too, transferring the infection. Read on to learn more about pinkeye, its symptoms and how to treat it. Conjunctivitis, or pinkeye, is an inflammation of the thin lining (the conjunctiva) that covers the white of the eyeball and the inner surface of the eyelids. Any virus or bacteria that infects the nose or throat can find its way into the linings of one or both eyes (or conjunctivae). Infections here, known as conjunctivitis (or pinkeye), produce a reddish discoloration and thick, discolored drainage. Other symptoms may include watering eyes and itching or irritation. Conjunctivitis caused by bacteria usually produces a thick discharge that gathers on the lids. In the morning, the eyelids may appear crusty or even stuck together. A warm, wet washcloth will remove the crust and unstick the lids. (Be sure to launder the washcloth before using it again to prevent spreading the bacteria to others.) Bacterial conjunctivitis will usually respond to antibiotic drops or ointment within a few days. Conjunctivitis caused by viruses tends to be accompanied by a more watery drainage than with bacterial infections, but in some cases the redness and swelling can be very intense. In most cases, the infection will run its course in 10 to 14 days. As with all viral infections, antibiotics will have no effect on this form of conjunctivitis.
