Potato Pink Rot, Pythium Leak and Seed-Piece Decay
HYG-3104-95
Randall C. Rowe
Sally A. Miller
Richard M. Riedel
Pink rot and Pythium leak, sometimes collectively called water rot, occur sporadically wherever potatoes are grown. These diseases are a problem of mature tubers at harvest and in storage. They are most serious when warm, wet soil conditions persist during tuber formation and at harvest. When newly-planted seed pieces are exposed to these conditions, Pythium seed-piece decay also can be severe. Major problems with these diseases are usually associated with excessive rainfall or irrigation either early or late in the season, especially on poorly-drained soils.
Symptoms
Causal Organisms
Pink rot is caused by several species of the soilborne fungus Phytophthora (NOT the species that causes late blight) while Pythium leak and seed-piece decay are caused by several species of the closely related soilborne fungus Pythium. These fungi are widely distributed in both water and soil, and their behavior is similar. They survive in soil within decaying plant material, or as resistant spores free in the soil. In warm, moist soil, these fungi produce swimming spores that move in water films. Roots can be infected by Phytophthora at almost any stage of plant growth, but symptoms are more severe on younger roots. Both groups of fungi infect tubers through wounds, but Phytophthora generally infects tubers before harvest, often through stolons. Infection by Pythium usually occurs through harvest wounds, especially at temperatures above 70 F. Seed pieces can be infected by Pythium as soon as they are planted.

Pink's Disease
I'm not sure why, but I feel like a failure. Especially today.
I had my soph interview. I have NO IDEA how it went. I'm pretty uneasy about it. There are 60 applicants, and only 20 make it. The odds aren't in my favour, and for some reason I just don't think I'll get it. I'm trying to tell myself it's not a big deal, because it really isn't. In fact, if I didn't get it, it would be kinda nice to have a bit more free time next year. However, it would still be really fun to get it.
I'm also feeling like I'm letting people down. Like Jeremiah. And my closest friends. And myself.
I don't know why, so I don't know how to fix it. Scrap that; I DO know why I feel this way, but don't know how to fix it, or if I'm even being rational. Probably not; I'm prone to do this to myself. That doesn't really help, though. I've been pretty confused lately about what I want out of life. It's scary that I'm going to have to decide that soon, relationship-wise but also career-wise. I don't know what I want, so how can I even choose? Why do Canadians have sex doggy style?

"Hi Everyone,
Just for the purpose of sharing information you may be interested to know this: My friend had an ancestor whose child died of Pink's disease in the early 1900s. He wondered what this was, so he did some research. He found out that when a child was teething mothers used to rub mercury on the baby's teeth! The poor little mite died from what was, in effect, mercury poisoning! Maureen." This thread: RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community. Learn more. Snow molds of wheat consist of several diseases, primarily pink snow mold and speckled snow mold, which generally are severe only in areas with early snowfall and prolonged, deep snow cover on unfrozen ground. Douglas, Lincoln, and Okanogan counties and higher elevation portions of other counties are snow mold areas. Cause
Pink snow mold is caused by Microdochium (synonym Fusarium nivale , a fungus with stout, sickle-shaped conidia that are 1- to 3-septate. The sexual stage is Monographella (synonym Calonectria nivalis . Perithecia of this ascomycete are found in mycelial mats and contain asci with 1- to 3-septate, spindle-shaped ascospores. The fungus attacks plant parts during wet, cool weather, but is not dependent upon snow. Speckled snow mold is caused by Typhula idahoensis and the similar T. ishikariensis

Antibiotics Usually Not Needed For Pink Eye For most kids with pink eye, also known as acute infective conjunctivitis, the condition will usually resolve on its own, without antibiotic treatment, results of a UK study suggest. Pink eye often results from a bacterial infection and standard clinical practice is the prescription of antibiotic eyedrops or ointments, Dr. Peter Rose of the University of Oxford and colleagues explain in The Lancet. Previous studies showing that antibiotics were the best treatment for pink eye largely involved patients with severe forms of the disease. The current study involved 326 children who were evaluated by a primary medical doctor for pink eye and were randomly assigned to receive eye drops containing antibiotic or inactive "placebo" drops. The children were otherwise healthy and had no disorders that would compromise the body's ability to fight off infection.

Coral disease
About 30 diseases of corals have been recognised since they were first discovered more than 30 years ago. There is still little known about the causes and effects of coral disease although diseases of coral can be caused by bacteria, fungi, algae and worms. Tabulate Acropora with White syndrome.
Photo: AIMS Coral disease has a major impact on Caribbean reefs, where 80% of coral has been lost to disease in the last 20 years. On the Great Barrier Reef, the Long-term Monitoring Program (run by the Australian Institute of Marine Science and supported by CRC Reef) has found an increase in coral disease on surveyed reefs over the last five years. However, only about seven diseases have been recorded from corals on the Great Barrier Reef and disease is not considered a major threat to the Reef. Scientists believe that the increase in disease abundance in some areas may be linked to higher sea temperatures because more diseases are seen in summer. Some scientists also believe that run-off of nutrients and sediment from the land may allow coral diseases to thrive.
Coral bleaching
High sea temperatures can cause corals to eject the symbiotic algae or ‘zooxanthellae' that normally produce food for the coral. This makes corals appear bleached, and can ultimately kill the coral. While coral bleaching is not a disease, some scientists have linked it to a virus in zooxanthellae which is triggered by heat. Some corals can recover from bleaching if the sea cools. However, corals that have been bleached are weaker and more prone to attack from disease.

Pink Eye (cont.)
In this Article What noninfectious conditions cause pink eye?
Allergic Pink Eye

Allergic pink eye is usually accompanied by intense itching, tearing, and swelling of the eye membranes. Frequent causes include seasonal pollens, animal dander, and dust. It is frequently seasonal, and goes along with other typical "allergy" symptoms such as sneezing, itchy nose, or scratchy throat. Cold moist wash clothes applied to the eyes and over-the-counter decongestant eye drops give welcome relief. Your doctor can prescribe stronger medications if these remedies are not adequate. Chemical Pink Eye
Chemical pink eye can result when any irritating substance enters the eyes. Common offending irritants are household cleaners, sprays of any kind, smoke, smog, and industrial pollutants. Prompt, thorough washing of the eyes with very large amounts of water is very important. Your doctor or your local poison control center should be contacted at once, even if you think the irritant or chemical is "safe", as some of the most common household products like bleach and furniture polish can be the most damaging! Underlying Diseases
Persistent conjunctivitis can be a sign of an uncommon underlying illness in the body. Most often these are rheumatic diseases, such as

Snow Mold Diseases of Turfgrass
How to identify, prevent, and control the principal snow molds of turfgrass in Nebraska. John E. Watkins, Extension Plant Pathologist Previous Category Catalog Order Info
Principal snow molds of Nebraska turfgrass are Fusarium patch (pink snow mold) and Typhula blight (gray snow mold). Of these two, Fusarium patch is usually the most prevalent and, due to the general lack of continuous snow cover during winter, probably the most damaging. Although snow molds occur on most types of turf grown in Nebraska, fine-leaved turf types are more often seriously injured than coarser lawn grasses.
Fusarium Patch (Pink Snow Mold)
Fusarium patch, caused by Fusarium nivale , can injure turf any time during prolonged, cool, wet weather, which in Nebraska can occur from mid-October to mid-April. F. nivale survives during dormant periods in diseased grass plants or in dead leaves in the thatch. When temperature and moisture conditions favor infection, the fungus produces thousands of spores on previously infected plant tissue. These spores and diseased leaf fragments are spread by traffic through the affected area. Figure 1. Ring-like symptoms of Fusarium patch on bentgrass. (92K JPG)
