“Garbage science!” That is how psychiatrist Eric London characterized what he had just heard from several fellow parents of autistic children. Some of the parents were also MDs or professionals in other fields. “If you presented your views to a journal-reading club at a medical school,” Dr. London continued, “they would be thrown out the door.” The view that Dr. London objected to so strongly-that perfectly normal children had become severely autistic shortly after being inoculated with vaccines containing large amounts of highly toxic mercury-had been presented by parent-attendees at a National Institutes of Health meeting on October 23, 2000. The conference on “The Role of the Environment in Autism,” was sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Continuing to deride what he called “garbage science,” Dr. London went on to explain that scientific progress proceeds like the building of a brick wall. “You start with a solid foundation to which you add, very systematically, experimentally proven facts, which fit neatly into place, brick by brick.”

The Rise and Fall of Pink Disease
ANN DALLY Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE e-mail SUMMARY This paper explores the social and medical history and context of pink disease (acrodynia), a serious disease of infants and young children that baffled the medical world during the first half of the twentieth century until it was shown to be caused by mercury poisoning. In the English-speaking world the commonest source of the mercury was teething powders, which were widely available and advertised with increasing sophistication.

Introduction
Tree legumes include an extensive range of multipurpose, widely adapted species (Nair et al. 1985) which are useful components of agricultural and silvicultural systems (NFT 1989). They are important throughout the tropics as sources of forage, firewood, charcoal, green manure and timber (NFT 1989, Hughes and Styles 1989). Over the last 15 years there has been a rapid explosion of reports of diseases affecting tree legumes. Over 80% of references cited in this section date from 1979 or later. However, we know very little about many important aspects of these diseases including control strategies. This section consolidates information on diseases of the most important tree legumes used for forage. Emphasis is given to foliage diseases which may directly reduce forage production and quality. We report some of the preliminary findings from recent surveys of diseases of Calliandra, Gliricidia and Leucaena

Identification
Erwinia and its subgeneric members usually are motile rods bearing peritrichous flagella and are able to ferment glucose leading to the formation of acid. Their fermentative pathway yields mixed acids and 2,3-butanediol. They are unable to utilize starch as a carbon source except for E. rhapontici , which produces a weakly diffusible pink pigment called ferrorosamine ( Feistner et al., 1983 E. rubrifaciens B. rubrifaciens ) produces a water soluble, diffusible red pigment called rubrifacine A ( Fistner et al., 1984 ) on yeast-glucose calcium carbonate agar. Some strains of Pectobacterium chrysanthemi produce yellow colonies streaked with a green-blue pigment. All are catalase positive and negative for exocellular cytochrome oxidase activity. Except for the Erwinia species that cause soft rot, the necrogenic and vascular wilting group reduce nitrate. On LB or 523 media, their colonies are generally mucoid and domed and can vary in color from white to cream. Members of the genus Pantoea produce colonies that may appear either as yellow to taupe or mauve on LB agar. In contrast to the

Erwinia and Related Genera
CLARENCE I. KADO
Introduction
Members of the genus Erwinia are primarily plant-pathogenic and plant-associated bacteria. As modern approaches have focused on the direct analysis of genes and their gene products, commonly associated phenotypes such as the type of disease that they cause and the relatedness of rDNA have prompted splitting of certain Erwinia members into the genus Enterobacter Pectobacterium Pantoea or Brenneria . For example, the genus Pectobacterium , which was suggested previously ( Brenner et al., 1973 ), has been resurrected to accommodate those species that profusely produce pectinolytic enzymes in plant pathogenesis and that have related rDNA ( Hauben et al., 1998 ). Because of the large difference in the percent G+C and the rDNA sequence, the genus Pantoea was added. As the sequences of entire genomes of this group of organisms become available, regrouping of the members of these genera will likely take place. Pairwise 16S rDNA sequence comparisons also showed E. alni

Greenwashing NEWS Oct 25, 2001 About the dangers of a little mercury... In a press-release from PROVE (Parents Requesting Open Vaccine Education), dated October 17, 2001, it's revealed that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) in the evaluation process of potential links between Thimerosal in vaccines and autism was not as open as it ought to be. According to the press release, the first evaluation of data showed a significantly increased risk, but this evaluation was kept confidential. When data were presented the original data were complemented, and this procedure of complementation rendered the risk assessment inconclusive. A number of lawsuits are going on, where it's claimed that thimerosal in vaccines caused neurological damage to infants, leading to the development of autism. The original data showed an increased risk of a magnitude, that previously has been taken as proof of exposures causing disease, according to the lead attorney in the filed cases, by courts of law in the United States. Conclusive or not-conclusive makes a big difference when stakes are high. Thousands of families, the attorney says, so stakes are high. So far the press release. Thimerosal is a preservative for vaccines and other drugs, such as nasal drops, ointments and drips for ophthalmic use. What makes Thimerosal controversial is its contents of mercury, and the potential neurotoxic effect from this heavy metal. There are other mercury containing preservatives used in drugs, but in vaccines Thimerosal is the substance of choice. The filed lawsuits claim that children with autism, who have participated in the vaccination programs are victims of mercuric neurotoxic effects from Thimerosal in the vaccines. The possible link between Thimerosal and autism is the subject for investigation by the CDC. The outcome of this process will of course be of great importance for what happens in the courts.

Diagnostic criteria consist of impairments in sociality and communication plus repetitive and stereotypic behaviors (1). Traits strongly associated with autism include movement disorders and sensory dysfunctions (2). Although autism may be apparent soon after birth, most autistic children experience at least several months, even a year or more of normal development followed by regression, defined as loss of function or failure to progress (2,3,4). in vitro studies also provide insights into the mechanisms of Hg toxicity. More recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have determined that the typical amount of Hg injected into infants and toddlers via childhood immunizations has exceeded government safety guidelines on an individual (6) and cumulative vaccine basis (7). The mercury in vaccines derives from thimerosal (TMS), a preservative which is 49.6% ethylmercury (eHg) (7).

Field Screening of Australian Provenances of Eucalypts against Cylindrocladium Leaf Blight and Pink Disease
Balasundaran, M., Florence, E.J. Maria, Sharma, J.K.
Low yield of eucalypts in Kerala State, India has been ascribed to poor genetic base and susceptibility to Cylindrocladium leaf blight (CLB) caused by Cylindrocladium spp. and pink disease (PD) caused by Corticium salmonicolor. A two-pronged eucalypt improvement programme was initiated by KFRI using elite plus trees from existing plantations and provenances obtained from CSIRO, Australia. This paper provides details of field performance of various eucalypt provenances with respect to disease resistance, growth and survival at the end of 4-year period. Two provenance trials comprising E. camaldulensis (EC), E. tereticornis (ET), E. grandis (EG), E. urophylla (EU) and E. pellita (EP) were established at Kottappara (75 m above msl) (a total of 42 provenances) and Vallakkadavu (900 m above msl) (19 provenances) in June 1990. At each location there were two replicate blocks, each with 10 plants of each provenance. Seedlings of locally grown ET and EG were planted as buffer rows. Each provenance was assessed for the incidence and severity of CLB and PD, and growth during August/September every year. The cumulative disease resistance indices, girth at breast height (GBH) and survival at the end of fourth year were utilized to quantify the overall performance of each provenance.
