Pierre Robin syndrome
Definition: Pierre Robin syndrome (also called Pierre Robin complex or sequence) is a condition present at birth that is characterized by a very small lower jaw (micrognathia). The tongue tends to fall back and downward (glossoptosis) and there is cleft soft palate.
Alternative Names: Robin sequence
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The specific causes of Pierre Robin syndrome are unknown. It can be part of many genetic syndromes. The lower jaw develops slowly over the first few months of fetal life but catches up over the first year after birth. Posterior placement of the tongue may cause choking episodes, feeding difficulty and breathing difficulties, especially while asleep.
Symptoms:
  • very small jaw with marked receding chin tongue appears large (is actually normal size but big relative to jaw) and is placed unusually far back in the oropharynx high arched palate cleft soft palate choking on tongue (a small opening in the roof of the mouth) natal teeth

Signs and tests: A physical examination is usually sufficient for your health care provider to diagnose this condition. A genetics consultation can rule out other associated anomalies and syndromes.

I am trying to find some information on PR Robinson syndrome. I believe it was once known as robbenose syndrome although I am not sure if this is how it was spelt. I wonder if you could direct to some information on this condition.
Answer
I think the condition you are trying to find out about is Pierre Robin syndrome. The features of the condition are:
1.A small lower jaw (micrognathia)
2.A tendency for the base of the tongue to ball up and fall backwards into the throat, which may cause breathing difficulties.
3.A cleft palate or a high arched palate. The jaw bone continues to grow during childhood and will usually fully correct by adult life.

Over the period of a few weeks, various parents of children with Pierre Robin discussed things. This is the 2nd in a series of 6. If you would like to meet some of these parents I suggest you join Cleft-Talk - the email discussion group. Wow, what a great discussion! I guess I should tell you that James never suffered from glossoptosis (the tongue thingy), but he did actually have a rather petite jaw, that has since grown. And, like I said earlier, his breathing was somewhat affected when he was really young. Ah, the ambiguities!! I admit to still being somewhat confused, because like Joanne said (I think it was you, Joanne!) you've got all these gray areas to deal with when making a diagnosis. Joanne, you mentioned that PRS can have many causes. Could y'all tell me some of them? We have no history of any clefting (that I know of) in either of our families.

Pierre Robin Syndrome
    Definition
An autosomal recessive disorder characterized by brachygnathia and cleft palate, often associated with glossoptosis, backward and upward displacement of the larynx, and angulation of the manubrium sterni. Cleft palate makes sucking and swallowing difficult, permitting easy access of fluids into the larynx. It may appear in several syndromes or as an isolated hypoplasia.

... What is Moebius Syndrome? Moebius Syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by lifetime facial paralysis. People with Moebius Syndrome can't smile or frown, and they often can't blink or move their eyes from side to side. In some instances, the syndrome is also associated with physical problems in other parts of the body. The Moebius Syndrome Foundation is a nonprofit organization started by parents and people with Moebius Syndrome. We've come together to do what we can to fight back - by spreading the word among the medical and lay communities and by supporting research into the causes, treatments, and possible cures for Moebius Syndrome. Moebius Syndrome is extremely rare. Two important nerves - the sixth and seventh cranial nerves - are not fully developed, causing eye muscle and facial paralysis. The movements of the face - blinking, lateral eye movements, and facial expressions are controlled by these nerves. Many of the other 12 cranial nerves may also be affected, including the 3rd, 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th.

What is Pierre Robin sequence?
Pierre Robin sequence is a birth defect that involves an abnormally small lower jaw and a tendency for the tongue to "ball up" and fall backward toward the throat and block the airway. Babies born with this condition may have cleft palate (roof of the mouth), micrognathia (small jaw) and glossoptosis (obstructing the airway). PRS is called a sequence because it results from a series of events that take place as the fetus forms in early pregnancy. In PRS, the initial defect of the fetus’s lower jaw leads to abnormal placement of the tongue. The displaced tongue causes clefting of the palate. In 1923, Pierre Robin, a French physician, linked the above symptoms with breathing problems in affected infants. The current complete name is Pierre Robin malformation sequence, but it can also be known as Robin Anomalad; Pierre Robin complex; and Pierre Robin syndrome.

Treatment: Infants must be kept prone (face down), which allows gravity to pull the tongue forward and keep the airway open. These problems abate over the first few years as the lower jaw grows and assumes a more normal size.
