Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy, and Hypnotherapists
Hypnosis and Phobias Webster's New World Dictionary defines a phobia as an irrational, excessive and persistent fear of some thing or situation. Regardless of what the logical or conscious mind knows and says, these fears persist in the subconscious mind where they are lodged. Since hypnosis is the most direct way into the subconscious, it stands to reason that it can become the instrument of disarming the irrational fear. Most phobias can be traced to an initial sensitizing event (define or give examples) and an activating event (define or give examples). These can be separate events or parts of the same event. The objective of therapy is to discover the cause(s) and desensitize the client from the fear.

Phobias and panic attacks
Part of the 'fight or flight' response, panic is an essential part of the body's defence system. But occasionally it becomes more serious, as with irrational fears and panic attacks.
In this article
Common phobias Common symptoms of panic attacks How common is it? What can I do to help myself? ... What support is available? Most of us have panicked with good reason at some time. The traffic light goes green, we start to cross the road, a car approaches fast and makes no sign of braking. To panic in this situation is normal - we run, and fast. But what if a perfectly harmless everyday experience creates the same response. Or worse, if you experience panic for no apparent reason and completely without warning. While some people enjoy being scared - what else are rollercoasters for - it's quite a different thing if you have no idea why you're scared or when it's going to stop.
Common phobias
It's possible to be phobic about anything, but these are particularly common fears:

There are two different types of phobias; specific phobia ; which is fear of a particular object, and social phobia ; which is fear of embarrassment in public places. People can often become so overwhelmed by their phobias that they will avoid the feared object or situation. This intense fear can sometimes disrupt normal life, interfering with situations in varying degrees of severity. The average age for onset of social phobias is between 15 and 20 years of age, although it can occur in childhood as well, whereas specific phobias can occur in all ages. Research has shown that traumatic events can trigger specific phobia, whereas social phobia is usually due to a heredity link. Treatment usually, involves medication, especially in the case of social phobia, or "exposure" therapy, in the case of specific phobia. SPECIFIC PHOBIA Specific phobia is quite common and usually becomes apparent in adolescence or early adulthood. The sufferer experiences irrational fears of certain things or situations, ie: heights, flying, dogs. When faced with or thinking about these situations or objects the phobic may bring on a panic attack or severe anxiety. Some sufferers may find that avoiding the object or situation is not disruptive to their life, and therefore may never need treatment. However, when people with specific phobia start to make important and major decisions to change their life to avoid the phobia cause, it is important that they seek treatment. Cognitive behavioural therapy is usually used by exposing the phobic to the situation or object and teaching skills to handle and cope with the situation.

Some common social phobias are. Public speaking. Performing on stage. Dealing with authority figures. Eating and drinking. Writing
Social Phobia is an anxiety disorder where the sufferer fears being negatively judged or evaluated by others and therefore they are afraid of doing something to embarrass or humiliate themselves in public. Some common social phobias are:
  • Public speaking
  • Performing on stage
  • Dealing with authority figures
  • Eating and drinking
  • Writing
  • Dating
  • Using public toilets
  • Sexual performance
  • Taking an exam
  • Social encounters in general
Some social phobia sufferers may only fear and/or avoid only one specific situation whereas others may be concerned about several social or performance situations. When the social phobia sufferer is faced with one of their feared situations they may experience physical symptoms of anxiety such as:
  • dizziness
  • heart palpitations
  • tense muscles
  • dry mouth
  • trembling
  • nausea
Some sufferers do not experience physical symptoms of anxiety but feel very self conscious and afraid.
  • Shy /socially phobic people believe that other people expect them to behave perfectly and if they don't they will be seen by others as stupid and consequently be rejected.
  • Shy people also look for negative reactions from other people which distracts them focussing on the task at hand and seeing the positive feedback.
