Phobia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Phobic anxiety disorders The term phobia , which comes from the Greek word for fear (φόβος, f o bos), denotes a number of psychological and physiological conditions that can range from serious disabilities to common fears to minor quirks. In addition, a number of neologisms have appeared with the suffix -phobia , which are not phobias in clinical sense, but rather describe a negative attitude towards something, see section Non-clinical uses of the term below. Phobias (in the clinical meaning of the term) are the most common form of anxiety disorder . An American study by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) found that between 5.1% and 21.5% of Americans suffer from phobias. Broken down by age and gender, the study found that phobias were the most common mental illness among women in all age groups and the second most common illness among men older than 25. The opposite of the suffix -phobia is a -philia or -philie (meaning "love of").

But when your fears are so great that they disrupt your daily life, you probably suffer from a phobia. Phobias can cause overwhelming fear of animals, objects or social situations, or the complete inability to deal with a given situation, for no apparent reason. Sometimes phobias can cause fear so intense it totally disables its victims. Phobias are among the most common of all mental illnesses, and they are usually the most successfully treated.

'I have not been out of the house for six months. I did go to see my doctor at Christmas, but I got into such a state that I nearly collapsed, and now I get him to see me here. I feel safe here and I don't get the awful feelings, but I'm not even relaxed at home if I know a stranger is visiting. I often have a drink to calm me if the paperboy is coming to collect the paper money or the gas man is coming to read the meter. Sometimes, though, I just refuse to answer the door.’ 'I was always a bit nervous about going out and about and, gradually, I went to fewer and fewer places on my own, and I began to rely more and more on a glass or two of sherry to give me Dutch courage. A year ago, I was able to use the corner shop and to get round the block to see my sister, but I can't do that now – even with the sherry. Just talking about it makes me feel wobbly and breathless. I try not to think about the awful feelings I get – thinking about them makes me feel almost as bad as going out does. Sometimes, I wonder whether I'm going mad.’
Overcoming anxiety Helen Kennerley (Robinson 1997) This booklet provides a brief introduction to phobias. It explains what they are, why they start, and what sort of treatment and support is available. It also suggests how people can learn to manage and overcome them, and where to get help.

phobia. [Gr. phobos , fear.] any persistent, irrational, and excessive fear of some particular thing or situation. ( Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary People who have struggled with phobias understand how immune such phobias can be to logical analysis. Like the recurrent nightmare of fleeing a hideous monster, it never seems to sink in that monsters don't exist. The irrational fears continue to plague the victim. While nightmares are transitory and often forgotten in the morning, other fears, some just as potent, lie in the consciousness of people even during their waking hours. Fear of heights, dogs, being closed in a room, etc. regularly traumatize people, affecting their lifestyle. Relatively little attention is given to religious fears, however. It is apparent that manipulative minds can readily distort the scriptures in order to produce feelings of fear, guilt, remorse and even hysteria. The followers of Jim Jones and Ayatollah Khomeini can attest to that. What is surprising is that often the victims are aware of their paranoia and know it to be destructive, but feel powerless to overcome it. This is especially true among Jehovah's Witnesses. Not satisfied with scripture alone, the Watchtower has added much commentary to the Bible, comprising a "Talmud" of rules and prohibitions involving smoking, holidays, etc. which create unnecessary fear of disobedience and finally guilt.

http://www.freeminds.org/psych/kidphob.htm
The Introduction Of Phobias (Deep Rooted Fears) And Other Development Traits In The Jehovah Witness Child by Randall Watters Parents obviously have a very powerful influence on their children. Even when they are abusive and insensitive towards their offspring, children still desire whatever vestige of love and approval they can get from their parents, and will often be obedient just to receive attention and care. Understanding this dynamic helps to explain how children growing up in the Watch Tower may be so heavily influenced by the need for approval that they are willing togive up whatever goals or aspirations they may have in order to please their parents, even long after they leave home and/or get married. In order for the indoctrination to be lasting and effective, PHOBIAS (deep-rooted fears) must be introduced to the child in order to "scare" them away from a course contrary to Watch Tower idealology, and the organization is very adept at planting and nuturing these phobias. As in the case of the elder in Korea with the four children (mentioned previously in our first article), the fear may be the threat of being cut off financially as well as losing dad's approval, but it also comes directly from the pages of THE WATCHTOWER in the form of warnings about being in the very last days, and how Jehovah will not look with approval upon those who "squander their time and energies" in non-Kingdom interests. Jehovah thus becomes the all powerful parent who, even if the child's real parents may not be too concerned, will himself cut the child off from his favour and possibility even eternal life. A powerful motovation indeed!

Specific (Simple) Phobia Specific Phobia is characterized by the excessive fear of an object or a situation, exposure to which causes an anxious response, such as a Panic Attack. Adults with phobias recognize that their fear is excessive and unreasonable, but they are unable to control it. The feared object or situation is usually avoided or anticipated with dread. Specific Phobia is diagnosed when an individual's fear interferes with their daily routine, employment (e.g., missing out on a promotion because of a fear of flying), social life (e.g., inability to go to crowded places), or if having the phobia is significantly distressful. The level of fear felt by the sufferer varies and can depend on the proximity of the feared object or chances of escape from the feared situation. If a fear is reasonable it cannot be classed as a phobia. Specific Phobia may have its onset in childhood, and is often brought on by a traumatic event; being bitten by a dog, for example, may bring about a fear of dogs. Phobias that begin in childhood may disappear as the individual grows older. Fear of certain types of animals is the most common Specific Phobia. The disorder can be comorbid with Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia.

What are "The Phobias"? In the anxiety literature, you read about them all the time...." the phobias "... The big problem with using this terminology is that everyone interprets "the phobias" in a different way, and many professionals interpret it only as relating to panic and its associated symptomatology. It is not accepted scientific practice to be imprecise. It is very important to define terms as precisely as possible. So, when someone uses the phrase "the phobias", ask them just what they mean. Are they talking about agoraphobia Or perhaps specific phobias , such as fear of snakes, claustrophobia, or emetophobia? Or maybe they're also including social phobia (social anxiety disorder).....a completely separate anxiety problem that is the THIRD largest mental health care problem in the world. That is precisely the problem....when someone says they treat "the phobias" , who knows what they mean? Even worse, do THEY know what they mean?

What is a Phobia? A phobia is an excessive and persistent fear of :a situation (e.g., enclosed places, driving, flying, seeing blood, heights) or an object (e.g., animals such as rats, snakes, spiders, dogs, or birds). is generally anticipated harm or danger related to the situation or object (e.g., having an accident while driving, being bitten by a dog), or fear of losing control and having anxiety-related physical sensations (e.g., panicking in an enclosed place, fainting upon seeing blood). The fear is considered excessive because it is out of proportion to the actual level of danger associated with the situation. When an individual with a phobia is exposed to the feared stimulus (the object or the situation) or related cues (things that remind us of the object or situation), an immediate anxiety response is triggered that can sometimes grow into a full-blown panic attack. Consequently, people with phobias either avoid the feared situations or objects or they endure a lot of distress. For example, an individual with a phobia of snakes experiences an anxiety reaction in a number of situation including seeing a snake on television, being outside in grassy or wooded areas where snakes may live, and seeing things that resemble a snake such as a coiled garden hose in the yard.
