by Rosalyn Carson-DeWitt, MD Definition Causes Risk Factors ... Organizations
Definition
Viral pharyngitis is a sore, inflamed throat caused by a virus. Sore Throat due to Inflammation www.nucleusinc.com
Causes
The following viruses are most likely to cause a sore throat:
  • Adenovirus Rhinovirus Parainfluenza virus Coxsackie virus Herpes Simplex virus Epstein-Barr virus Cytomegalovirus
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.
  • Age: Children Cigarette smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke Living or working in close quarters such as:
    • Daycare School Military forces
    Diabetes Lowered immunity due to:
    • Excess fatigue Poor eating habits Poor hygiene Recent illness
    Symptoms
    Symptoms include:
    • Sore, red, swollen throat Trouble swallowing Decreased appetite Fatigue Swollen, tender lymph nodes in the neck and behind the ears
    Diagnosis
The doctor will ask about your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical exam. Most viral sore throats are diagnosed based on the symptoms and examination of the throat. Often, the throat will be swabbed to make sure that the sore throat isn't due to strep infection, which requires treatment with antibiotics.
    Treatment
There are no treatments to cure a viral sore throat. Most cases of viral pharyngitis heal on their own within about a week's time.

Answer - "Strep" refers to a specific bacteria (streptococcus) which is a common bacterial cause of pharyngitis or tonsillitis ("strep throat"). Streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis is usually associated with moderate to severe sore throat, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The condition is treated with antibiotics (penicillin, erythromycin, cephalosporins), fluids, and tylenol. Steve Dankle, MD

GESUNDHEIT A-Z

If caused by the group A streptococcus, it is called "strep throat". The chronic form can be caused by a continuing infection of the sinuses , lungs or mouth, or by constant irritation from smoking, breathing heavily polluted air, food allergies or consuming too much alcohol, or by swallowing substances that scald, corrode or scratch the throat. Pharyngitis is a common illness. Even strep throat is usually a self-limiting disease. Controlled trials show that clinical recovery is similar in cases with and without the use of antibiotics. The "streptophobia" associated with the risk of rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis is probably unwarranted today, although proper care is still important. Epidemiological surveys demonstrate a correlation between vitamin C deficiency and the development of post-streptococcal consequences. Rheumatic fever is virtually nonexistent in the

Throat ailment shelves Martinez
By Bob Hohler, Globe Staff, 8/22/2003 Just as their mounting on-field woes posed one of their gravest challenges of the season, the Red Sox yesterday confronted another daunting obstacle when Pedro Martinez was sidelined with severe throat inflammation. ADVERTISEMENT The illness, which came on suddenly the previous night, forced the Sox to replace their ace with Casey Fossum in the finale of a pivotal three-game series against the A's and raised questions about whether Martinez will remain on schedule to face the Yankees in each of Boston's final two series against their archrivals. Martinez was on medication for an abnormally high fever and throat discomfort and was resting at home as the Sox prepared to the face the A's, according to team spokesman Kevin Shea. Team physician Bill Morgan diagnosed the ace's condition as pharyngitis, a severe inflammation of the throat, though the results of a battery of tests were pending, Shea said. The Sox said Morgan was unavailable to discuss the team's prized righthander. Manager Grady Little said Martinez, who leads the American League in ERA (2.32), will pitch again as soon as he is able, but the team could not estimate a recovery period until Morgan evaluates the test results. Pharyngitis can involve either a viral or bacterial infection and can be related to strep throat, among other conditions.

Current Treatment Options in Infectious Diseases
Outline Opinion statement Opinion statement Introduction Treatment References Pharyngitis is a commonly encountered problem in clinical practice. It has been estimated that the complaint of sore throat results in 40 million adult visits to medical facilities each year. The disorder can represent a local abnormality or a manifestation of a systemic process. It is caused most commonly by micro-organisms. Infection produced by group A -hemolytic streptococcus (GABHS) has occasioned the most attention because antibiotic treatment has the capacity to prevent spread, as well as suppurative and selective nonsuppurative complications (acute rheumatic fever). Penicillin is the antibiotic of choice for the treatment of GABHS pharyngitis. Alternative antibiotics such as erythromycin or clindamycin are preferred for the penicillin-allergic patient. While culture of the throat swab has been the traditional gold standard for microbiologic identification of GABHS, recently improved rapid antigen detection tests may represent an alternate diagnostic approach. Recognition of pharyngitis as a component of the primary HIV syndrome has taken on added importance because these patients require counseling, life-long medical observation and care, and consideration for highly active antiretroviral therapies.
