The Terri Schiavo Case
In a vegetative state, actions are involuntary reflexes
By STEPHEN NOHLGREN, Times Staff Writer Published March 24, 2005 What is a persistent vegetative state? It's a condition in which people with severely damaged brains have no awareness of self or the environment around them. It is troublesome because lesser functioning parts of the brain continue to operate. People go to sleep, blink their eyes, focus on objects briefly, react to sounds and touch. But in a true vegetative state, these are involuntary reflexes and not reproducible, according to the American Academy of Neurology. Florida law gives a specific definition: "The absence of voluntary action or cognitive behavior of any kind. An inability to communicate or interact purposely with the environment."

a persistent vegetative state
Tanya Herman's will "Then in October 2003, Herman logged on to an internet chat room and found JoeK40, who said he was a 40-year-old builder and single - but really was Joseph William Korp, 45, a tyre factory worker with a predatory nature and an inconvenient wife called Maria." A year and a half later: "When Maria entered the garage about 10 minutes later, Herman - taller and stronger - surprised her from behind, strangling her with the black strap from a carry bag. There was a short, ugly struggle, but Maria slumped to the floor and Herman, believing she was dead, put her in the trunk of her maroon Mazda. She drove the car to Dallas Brooks Drive, near the Shrine of Remembrance, and - despite hearing the sound of breathing - abandoned it there." This is known to us locals as the Korp case, explained with elan by Gary Tippet and Jamie Berry. The Age calls it real life film noir, although the account does not quite do justice to the Mickey Spillane sordidness of the event. The photo gallery is here She was in thrall to the man from hell - who would even decide where to scatter her ashes.

Schiavo, Hudson, and Nikolouzos
Sun Hudson, a six-month-old boy with a fatal congenital disease, died Thursday after a Texas hospital, over his mother's objections, withdrew his feeding tube. The child was apparently certain to die, but was conscious. [Or perhaps not: see third update below.] The hospital simply decided that it had better things to do than keeping the child alive, and the Texas courts upheld that decision after the penniless mother failed, during the 10-day window provided for by Texas law, to find another institution willing to take the child . Where, I would ask, is the outrage? In particular, where is the outrage from those like Tom DeLay, who referred to the withdrawal of Terry Schiavo's life support as "murder" ? If it's appropriate to Federalize the Schiavo case, what about the people being terminated simply because their cases are hopeless and their bank accounts empty? Sun Hudson is dead, but 68-year-old Spiro Nikolouzos is still alive , thanks to an emergency appeals court order issued yesterday. However, his life support could be cut off at any moment. A nursing home is willing to take him

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Home Page Archives Table of Contents Euthanasia in Cases of a Persistent Vegetative State Comment by Maynard S. Clark (2 Apr 2000): The issue of prolonging life is a very complex one, and this issue is brought up in a number of ethical thinkers in the vegetarian movement, most notably Dr. Peter Singer at the Princeton Center for Bioethics (New Jersey). Many handicapped, senior rights, and prolife groups have picketed Singer at Princeton (and elsewhere) and even at Harvard Medical School (where I heard him several weeks ago). As you probably know, even the diagnosis of persistent vegetative state is a difficult one and the brain injury literature is full of information on its frequent misdiagnosis. Almost every person who has sustained a severe brain injury has had their family told by competent medical personnel that their loved one is going to die ... and in the unlikely case that "such an one" should live, s/he would be (likened unto) a "vegetable" with an unacceptable quality of life. Despite this pessimistic diagnosis, the brain injury rehabilitation programs across the United States are full of patients, young and old, who somehow "beat the odds" and recover.

tell us what you think. Richard Hofstadter’s Anti-Intellectualism in American Life (1962) was one of the most profound and insightful analyses of the American condition published in the 20th century. In this work, Hofstadter discussed the long-standing trend in American culture that seeks to minimize the importance of self-criticism, self-reflection, introspection, evaluation- in short, thinking. In America, Hofstadter argued, the world of ideas- and particularly intellectual work that seeks to critically evaluate standing cultural norms and practices- is regarded with deep suspicion and malevolence. Hofstadter’s point was that this suspicion of the intellectual was really an anti-democratic tendency, because it discouraged the Socratic questioning of cultural praxis necessary to sustain American ideals and institutions.
I often feel that our contemporary moment is the pinnacle of the anti-intellectualism Hofstadter was describing as crucial aspect of American culture. And not just because we have a president who
