This is part of a series on Opportunistic Infections ("OIs"). Please note that
  • This Page Is Just A Starting Point: AEGiS is a great place for you to find overview information about HIV and opportunistic infections, but it is not a substitute for getting medical advice from a doctor who specializes in treating HIV.
  • Finding The Latest Information: Advances in treating opportunistic infections can happen at any time, so the material on this page may be outdated. Some links in the see also section at the bottom of this page are actually special database links. They may contain information published after this page was written.
    Description
    • Symptoms: The most common symptom is severe, burning, aching pain in the feet and legs, which may prevent walking. ( BALA
    • Variations: GMHC
    • Sensory Neuropathy. The most common type of neuropathy associated with AIDS is called distal symmetrical polyneuropathy (DSPN). This syndrome is a result of the degeneration of the nerves responsible for conducting impulses, and is characterized by numbness and a sensation of pins and needles. DSPN causes few serious abnormalities and mostly results in numbness or tingling of the feet and slowed reflexes at the ankles. It generally occurs with more severe immunosuppression and is steadily progressive. Treatment with tricyclic antidepressants, such as Elavil, relieves symptoms but does not affect the underlying nerve damage.

Questions in The Neurology Forum are being answered by doctors from
The Cleveland Clinic , consistently ranked one of the best hospitals in America. Forum: The Neurology and Neurosurgery Forum
    Topic: Amyloidosis
    Subject: Peripheral Neuropathy and Amyloidosis
You may have come up with something which explains your problems and it is
VERY important that you share this information with bothof your physicians.
Amyloidosis is a disease in which abnormal protein polymers or aggregates
are laid dowm in multiple organs, it usually occurrs in response to chronic
infection or inflammation and given your history of chronic hepatitis you
    would be a likely candidate.
Amyloid is laid dowm as I mentioned in multiple organs, including skin, spleen, kidneys and peripheral nerves. In solid organs it can cause enlargement,in peripheral nerves it can cause neuropathy. The diagnosis can be made by a biopsy of a peripheral nerve or any other involved tissue, I would bring this to the attention of your neurologist as it is obviously very relevant ot your subsequent evaluation and treatment.

    Peripheral Neuropathy
a Simple FactSheet from the A IDS T reatment D ata N etwork Peripheral neuropathy is:
A condition caused by damage to the nerves in the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system includes nerves that run from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Many of these nerves are involved with sensation and feeling things such as pain, temperature and touch. Up to one-third of people with HIV may get some symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is usually felt at first as tingling and numbness in the hands and feet. Symptoms can be described as burning, shooting pain, throbbing, aching, and "feels like frostbite" or "walking on a bed of coals." Peripheral neuropathy can sometimes be caused by HIV but is most commonly a side effect of drugs. Sometimes neuropathy can be caused by vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. Diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy is done by a physical exam. Tests of vitamin B12 levels, thyroid function and glucose levels are also used to check for vitamin deficiencies or diabetes. If peripheral neuropathy is caused by a drug, the symptoms usually get better once the drug is stopped, although it can take 6-8 weeks and the pain can actually get worse for a while. Some other conditions can have the same symptoms and be confused with peripheral neuropathy. A symptom of CMV myelitis is a general weakening of the legs and is treated with anti-CMV drugs. Vacular myelopathy can cause numbness in the limbs and weakening of the spinal cord. New treatments are being studied for myelopathy. Herpes infections that cause symptoms of peripheral neuropathy are treated with

    Peripheral Neuropathy
Information for health professionals on peripheral neuropathy Peripheral neuropathy is the general term that refers to disorders of peripheral nerves. The peripheral nervous system is made up of the nerves that branch out of the spinal cord to different parts of the body. Peripheral neuropathy is a relatively common neurological disorder that results from damage to the peripheral nerves. It can be caused by a number of diseases of the nerves or be the result of systemic illnesses. Many of the peripheral neuropathy's have a well established cause such as diabetes, alcoholism, uremia, AIDs, or nutritional deficiencies. Diabetes is, by far, one of the most common causes of peripheral neuropathy. Other less common causes include exposure to cold or radiation, a few medicines, toxic substances, vascular or collagen disorders, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma and rheumatoid arthritis.
    Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy:
The peripheral nervous system consists of motor (to help move) nerves and sensory (to help feel) nerves. Either or both sets of nerves can be affected in neuropathy.
