Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the sac that surrounds and supports the heart. This sac is called the pericardium. This inflammation can cause a build-up of fluid, blood, or pus that can cause the sack to squeeze the heart. This squeezing makes the heart's job of pumping blood difficult. Symptoms include:
  • chest pain that may be relieved with sitting and leaning forward fatigue shortness of breath or chest pain with taking a deep breath and fever
Pericarditis can be caused by certain medications or an injury to the heart, as well as a wide range of illnesses, including:
  • viral or bacterial infections cancer rheumatic fever and systemic diseases
People often confuse the symptoms of pericarditis with heart attack because the symptoms are similar. If left untreated, pericarditis can be very serious, result in permanent damage to the heart, and even fatal. Most people recover fully from it. Pericarditis is treated with medication to reduce the inflammation and fluid buildup and to relieve pain. Bed rest is important until the condition has been controlled. Sometimes surgery is necessary to cut a window in the sac to allow it to drain.

Pericarditis
What is pericarditis?
Pericarditis is a condition in which the pericardium becomes inflamed. The pericardium is the thin membrane that covers the heart. It is made up of tissue that is loose enough to allow the heart to move and change in size. Inflammation of the pericardium can cause chest pain.
How does it occur?
Inflammation of the membrane around the heart can be caused by:
  • infection, usually caused by a virus injury to the heart rheumatic fever myocardial infarction (heart attack) connective tissue disease, such as lupus cancer.
Sometimes a cause cannot be identified.

Pericarditis

This 31 y/o male developed abdominal pain and dyspnea on exertion. Selected images from an abdominal CT shown above demonstrate calcific pericarditis. Additionally, there is irregularity of the ventricular outline and the inferior vena cava is markedly enlarged consistent with constrictive pericarditis. Cardiac catheterization revealed equalization of pressures in the cardiac chambers. The patient experienced relief of symptoms after pericardiectomy. An etiology for the calcific pericarditis was never firmly established.

Pericarditis Pericarditis is usually a complication of viral infections caused by adenovirus and coxsackie virus. Less frequently, it can be caused by the polio influenza or rubella viruses. Infections with bacteria can lead to bacterial pericarditis (also called purulent pericarditis). Some fungal infections can also produce pericarditis. In addition, pericarditis can be associated with
