Summary
Pericarditis is an inflammation of the pericardium chest pain (especially upon taking a deep breath) and shortness of breath Pericarditis can be caused by a wide variety of conditions. Most commonly, it is caused by a viral infection. It can also be caused by diseases such as cancer, AIDS or as the result of heart attack , kidney failure or injury. In some cases, pericarditis has no known cause.

Pericarditis
(En español) The pericardium is a thin, sac-like covering (a membrane) that surrounds your heart. The outer layer of the pericardium surrounds the roots of your heart's major blood vessels. Ligaments attach this layer to your spinal column, diaphragm, and other parts of your body. The inner layer of the pericardium is attached to the heart muscle. A coating of fluid separates the two layers of membrane, letting the heart move as it beats, yet still be attached to your body. Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium. When pericarditis occurs, the amount of fluid between the two layers of the pericardium increases. This increased fluid presses on the heart and restricts its pumping action.

Pericarditis
Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid collects in the pericardial sac between the heart and the surrounding pericardium. A medical emergency, cardiac tamponade deprives the body of oxygen and requires immediate treatment. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group.) Definition
Pericarditis is an inflammation of the two layers of the thin, sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart. This membrane is called the pericardium, so the term pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardium. Description
Pericarditis is fairly common. It affects approximately one in 1,000 people. The most common form is caused by infection with a virus. People in their 20s and 30s who have had a recent upper respiratory infection are most likely to be affected, along with men aged 20-50. One out of every four people who have had pericarditis will get it again, but after two years these relapses are less likely.
The viruses that cause pericarditis include those that cause influenza polio , and rubella (German measles ). In children, the most common viruses that cause pericarditis are the adenovirus and the cocksackievirus (which is most likely to affect children during warmer weather).

Acute pericarditis usually results from infection or other conditions that irritate the pericardium. Infection is usually due to a virus but may be caused by bacteria, parasites (including protozoa), or fungi.

Pericarditis
Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium - the sac which surrounds the heart. It causes chest pains. Most cases are due to a viral infection which usually goes away within a few weeks. The only treatment usually needed is painkillers. There are some less common causes which may need other treatments.
What is the pericardium and pericarditis? The pericardium is a thin sac-like tissue that covers the outer surface of the heart. It helps to anchor the heart in place, and prevents the heart from moving in the chest when you move. The pericardium has an inner and outer layer. There is a thin layer of 'lubricating' fluid between the two layers. Pericarditis means inflammation of the pericardium. What are the causes of pericarditis? Viral infection
Infection with a virus is the most common cause. Several different viruses can cause pericarditis including: coxsackie viruses, echo viruses, adeno viruses, the mumps virus, and viruses that cause hepatitis. Other causes
Other causes are uncommon and include:
  • Infection with a bacterium. This often causes pus to form between the inner and outer layers of the pericardium. The infection has usually spread from nearby tissues such as an infection of the heart itself, or from a wound infection following heart surgery. Rarely, syphilis or fungi can infect the pericardium.

Overview Pericarditis is a swelling and irritation of the pericardium, the thin sac-like membrane that surrounds your heart. This condition often causes chest pain and other signs and symptoms. Pericarditis may be acute or chronic. The sharp chest pain associated with acute pericarditis occurs when the pericardium rubs against the heart's outer layer. Mild cases may improve on their own. Treatment for more severe cases may include medications and surgery. Early diagnosis and treatment is important to reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Definition
Pericarditis is an inflammation (irritation and swelling) of the pericardium, the thin sac that surrounds the heart. Extra fluid that builds up between the two layers of the pericardium restricts the heart’s action.
Causes
The cause of pericarditis is often unknown. However, possible causes include:
  • Viral, bacterial, or fungal infection Heart attack Inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus Cancer that has spread from a tumor near the heart Kidney failure Injury or surgery affecting the chest, esophagus (food pipe), or heart Radiation treatment Certain medications used to suppress the immune system
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition. Risk factors for pericarditis include:
  • Weakened immune system that is not able to fight off infections and other diseases Any of the causes listed above
Symptoms
Chest pain is a common symptom of pericarditis, especially over the left side or center of the chest. Sometimes it spreads to the neck and left shoulder. It is usually a sharp, stabbing pain. Deep breathing or lying down may worsen the pain. Sitting up may lessen it. Other symptoms may include:

To the Heart Center Heart Disease: Pericardial Disease (Pericarditis) Pericardial disease, or pericarditis, is inflammation of any of the layers of the pericardium. The pericardium is a thin fibrous membrane sac that surrounds the heart. The pericardium consists of:
  • An inner layer (visceral pericardium) that envelopes the entire heart
  • An outer layer (parietal pericardium) comprising the outer fibrous sac
  • A middle fluid layer to prevent friction between the parietal pericardium and visceral pericardium

In children, pericarditis is most likely to occur following surgery to repair congenital (present at birth) heart defects or acquired heart disease. However, other causes may include the following:
  • infection (viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic)
  • chest trauma or injury
  • connective tissue disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus)
What are the symptoms of pericarditis?
The following are the most common symptoms of pericarditis. However, each child may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
  • chest pain that:

In this article
What is it? What are the symptoms? How is it treated?
What is it?
When the pericardium becomes inflamed, the amount of fluid between its two layers increases, compressing the heart and interfering with its ability to function properly. The inflammation is most often a complication of a viral infection.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms of pericarditis include pain in the centre of the chest - many people believe they are having a heart attack - which is worse when taking a deep breath and relieved by sitting forwards; fever; pain in the shoulders and neck; difficulty breathing; cough and fatigue. Complications of pericarditis include arrhythmias (irregular heart rates), pericardial effusion (fluid collection between the two layers of the pericardium), and chronic heart failure. Pericarditis make occur as a complication of: a viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection; autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and sysytemic lupus erythematosis (SLE); a heart attack or heart surgery; or cancer.
