Peptic ulcers may form in the lining of the stomach (gastric ulcers) or just below the stomach, at the start of the small intestine (duodenal ulcers). The most common causes of peptic ulcers are infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria and frequent use of aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Common symptoms of an ulcer include:
  • Burning, aching, and gnawing pain between the navel and the breastbone (epigastric pain), possibly extending to the back.
    • Pain may last minutes or hours and is often relieved by eating or by taking antacids or a stomach acid blocker.

What are Peptic Ulcers?
An ulcer is a sore or erosion that forms when the lining of the gut is corroded by acidic digestive juices. Peptic Ulcers can form in the lining of the stomach (gastric ulcers), duodenum (the first part of the small bowel or intestine) or the oesophagus (gullet or swallowing tube). Peptic ulcers are quite common; it is known that 5-10% of the world’s population suffer from peptic ulcers at least once.
How do you get Peptic Ulcers?
While stomach acid plays a significant role in the development of ulcers, other factors may be involved, including infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter Pylori, smoking, and the long-term use of certain anti-inflammatory (pain killing) medicines. These do this by irritating or damaging the lining of the stomach.
How serious are Peptic Ulcers?
Symptoms of an ulcer are variable, but may include upper abdominal burning or hunger pain 1-3 hours after meals and in the middle of the night. In some cases, serious complications can occur like bleeding or perforation (erosion of the ulcer right through the gut wall). Most ulcers are effectively healed with treatment.

In a few cases, cancerous tumors in the stomach or pancreas can also cause ulcers.

Nearly 25 % of people in our community suffer from dyspepsia, which means symptoms of bad digestion like abdominal pain or burning, fullness and gas. These symptoms are commonly referred to as those of "acidity " and most people resort to self medication. It is important to remember that any new dyspepsia of more than one month duration should be investigated. Further, at age above 45 years and the presence of "alarm" symptoms like loss of appetite, weight loss and difficulty in swallowing investigations are mandatory. Peptic ulcer is responsible for about 10 % of these symptoms. It is important for patients suffering from dyspepsia to be evaluated by their physician as apart from ulcers, cancer of stomach may also present in the same way.
Causes of peptic ulcers
Peptic ulcer implies the development of a breach in the lining of stomach or upper small intestine called duodenum and to the naked eye it looks like a wound. This illness effects nearly 10% of people in our country. It is commonly found in young people at the prime of their age and has been said to be associated with "hurry, worry and curry". The factors responsible for causing ulcers include:

Peptic Ulcers
Peptic Ulcers Overview
In the digestive system, an ulcer is an area where tissue has been destroyed by gastric juices and stomach acid. Peptic ulcer disease is a general term for ulcers that occur in the stomach or duodenum (upper part of the small intestine).
  • A peptic ulcer is an erosion or sore in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract.
The mucous membrane lining the digestive tract erodes and causes a gradual breakdown of tissue.
This breakdown causes a gnawing or burning pain in the upper middle part of the belly (abdomen).
Although most peptic ulcers are small, they can cause a considerable amount of discomfort.
Peptic ulcers are a very common condition in the United States and throughout the world.
  • In the United States, an estimated 25 million people will suffer an ulcer at some point. That's 1 in 10 people.
About 4 million people are affected by ulcers at any given time.
There are approximately 350,000-500,000 new cases and more than 1 million ulcer-related hospitalizations each year in this country alone.

When you eat, your stomach produces hydrochloric acid and an enzyme called pepsin to digest the food.
  • The food is partially digested in the stomach and then moves on to the duodenum to continue the process.
Peptic ulcers occur when the acid and enzyme overcome the defense mechanisms of the gastrointestinal tract and cause an erosion in the mucosal wall.
The medical community long believed that ulcers were caused by lifestyle factors such as eating habits, cigarette smoking, and stress.
  • Gradually, researchers realized that people with ulcers had an imbalance between, on one hand, acid and pepsin, and on the other, the digestive tract's ability to protect itself from these harsh substances.
Research done in the 1980s showed that ulcers are actually caused by infection with a bacterium named Helicobacter pylori , usually called H pylori
Not everyone who gets an ulcer is infected with H pylori . We now know that aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause ulcers if taken regularly.
While we no longer believe that lifestyle factors cause ulcers, we do believe that they play a role. Some types of medical therapy also can contribute to ulcer formation. The following factors can weaken the protective mucosal barrier of the stomach. This increases the chances of getting an ulcer and slows healing of existing ulcers.

Treatment of Peptic Ulcers at Mayo Clinic
(Synonyms: stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers) Ulcer is a medical term for an open sore, and a peptic ulcer is a sore in the lining of your stomach or small intestine. Left untreated, peptic ulcers can cause internal bleeding (commonly called a bleeding ulcer). Peptic ulcers may even perforate the wall of your stomach or small intestine. Peptic ulcers usually cause pain from stomach acid washing over the open sore. But the pain may decrease or even disappear when bleeding occurs because the blood buffers the acid. About 10 percent of people with bleeding peptic ulcers do not experience pain. Peptic ulcers are common. Five to 10 percent of Americans experience a peptic ulcer at some point in their lives. The good news is that the rate of bacterial infections that can cause some peptic ulcers seems to be dropping in the United States. You should not treat an ulcer on your own, without seeing a doctor. Over-the-counter antacids and acid blockers may relieve the frequent pain, but the relief is always short-lived. With a doctor's help, you can find prompt relief from ulcer pain as well as a lifelong cure from the disease.

produced tends to get less with age.
A very important cause of developing an ulcer is a germ or bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, known as H. pylori. This is found in the lining of the stomach of about half of the adults in Britain and it is now certain that having this germ present makes developing ulcers much more likely. Patients with duodenal ulcer almost always have this germ present and at least 80% of gastric ulcer patients also have it.
Medical research is actively investigating why it is that only some people who are infected with the germ get ulcers.

Peptic Ulcers
A Peptic ulcer is a term used to describe a point in the lining of the stomach or duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) that has been eroded, leaving an open wound in the associated tissues that bleed. Symptoms of an ulcer vary from person to person but are most often associated with abdominal discomfort 45-60 minutes after a meal or discomfort during the night. While some experience sharp burning pain, many describe it as a gnawing, burning, cramp like or aching feeling. Ulcers can be brought on by a number of factors, with stress and anxiety being on the top of the list. Certain prescription drugs and even the use of aspirin can increase stomach acidity, especially if taken over long periods of time. Some nutritional supplements such as vitamin C can contribute to ulcers. In fact, researchers have found that sugar can increase stomach acidity as well.

What causes peptic ulcers?
The two most common causes of peptic ulcers are:
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori H. pylori ) bacteria. H. pylori live in the mucous lining of the stomach and cause inflammation that could lead to an ulcer. Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) . It is not entirely clear how NSAIDs cause ulcers. The two most likely ways this may happen are that:
    • NSAIDs may interfere with prostaglandins, chemicals that may help regulate the protective lining of the stomach. Use of NSAIDs may directly irritate the stomach's lining, making it easier for ulcers to form.
